My husband is the son of Max W Bittner (Mar Bittner in the 1930 census). He is the oldest son of Theodore and Mary (Okey) Bittner. Theodore and Mary had five other children. John, Lyle, Jerry, Evelyn and Marlene (not in that order).

I was able to find some information on Cornelia Newport, but the Bittner family past John Michael is a mystery to everyone I talk to. Have you found any further information?

Re: Bittner in Detroit

Hi, Ruth.

Thanks for the details you so kindly forwarded on Gottfried Bittner. Doesn't seem likely it's the same Gottfried Bittner...mine arrived USA ca 1881, married in Ottawa Cty 1884 to Ernstina Butt, and had 9 children that I know of there in Ohio (Genoa area, between Toledo and Sandusky/Cleveland). Possibly I can check the estate records, though, to see if it's a Bittner relative! Thanks for the clue.

Where did your Bertha live, Detroit only? Detroit's 50-60 miles from Genoa, OH. What were Bertha's birth and death dates? Think I mentioned Gottfried was born ca 1855 in Germany.

I did find a list of Ohio marriages which include several Bittners or variations of the name in Ottawa Cty, including: Christina Bittner m. 1871, Margaret Bottner m. 1883, Fred Buettner m. 1877, Lucetta Bitner m. 1872. There are more in Ohio, but I've not checked surrounding counties yet to see if there might be connections. If any of these names are familiar, please let me kkow.

My own Anna Bittner (dau. of Gottfried and Ernstina) moved to Livingston Cty, MI, near Fenton, and married James Hogan. Quite sure her sister Emma Bittner was there already, brother Amiel and sister Minnie also.

Known children of Gottfried and Ernstina: Emma, Ida, William, Gusta, Anna, Fred, Amiel, John, Minnie.

Best Regards,

Tina
Michigan

The only mention of Gottfried Bittner I have is from a receipt dated April 9, 1909, that suggests he may have been the father or brother of my gggrandmother, Bertha Bittner Lichtenberg. The receipt reads, "Received of Herman L. Spahr, American consul, Breslau, Germany, $83.97 in full legacy due to the heirs of Bertha Lichtenberg, deceased, from the estate of Gottfried Bittner." It is signed by one of Bertha's daughters, Alvina Lichtenberg Garrick, "Vina Garrick, Administratix, by A.H. Fiedbach, Attorney, Cleveland, Ohio."

If you think there might be a connection with your Bittners, please let me know. I also have a portrait of a unnamed woman labeled "Aunt Vina's aunt", and taken in Ohio. I suspect she may be Bertha's sister.

Good luck on your search.

Ruth Held
Asheboro, NC

Do you have information on Gottfried Bittner of Breslau Germany?

I have a Gottfried Bittner b. ca 1855 in Germany married Ernestine also from Germany b. ca 1864. Gottfried emigrated ca 1881-1889 via Census records. The couple lived in Benton, Ottawa Cty, Ohio, according to 1900 and 1910 Census. Children: Emma, Ida, William, Gusta, Anna (my great grandmother), Fred, Amiel, John, Minnie, Isibed (?).

Anna married James Henry Hogan, and moved to Livingston Cty, MI, where sister Emma and Minnie lived as well.

Trying to trace descendants of Gottfried and Ernestine (also called Tina), place of origin in Germany, and ancestors of either/both.

Regards,

Tina Cole
Michigan

I am in need of assistance. I have been trying to figure out who Chancy Bittner's parents are. The information I have obtained so far indicated he was born in Somerset, PA on Mar. 29, 1833 and died on Jan. 20, 1991 in Jasper County, Iowa. He moved to Iowa in 1870 and was married to Harriet Deal, Barbara Faitley, and Rachel Deal. Is there anyone out there that might provide me information on who his parents are.

Searching for Benjamin Bittner born PA and his wife Sally or Sallie Fullem (Fullom, Fulton, Fulma) also born PA.
Had 2 children in PA:
1) Mahala Bittner born about 1871
2) Dera (male) born about 1878
2 more children born probably Marshall County, Iowa
3) Matilda born about 1884
4) Calvin born about 1886

Benjamin and Sallie may have died young, Mahala married 1886 Carl Beaman in Marshall Co., Iowa, Matilda married 1900 to Henry Moorman.
Can anyone shed a light on this mystrious couple? Lots of Benjamins out there but can't fit one to this family and I don't have any dates for Benjamin or Sallie.
Thanks, Peggy
Thanks for your reply!
I had suspected that Benjamin was of that family. Everything I had researched had led me there!

Benjamin born about 1844 married Sallie Fullem born about 1846. Children:
1 Amanda born ca. 1867
2 Ezra ca 1868
3 Elizabeth ca 1869
4 Mahala ca. 1871
5 Dera or Uriah 1878 -79 (may 2 different children but I think the same child)
6 Matilda b, ca May 1884
7 Calvin 1886

I have some descendant info. Matilda is the main line I am working on. She was my nephew's maternal great-grandmother.
Peggy
I recently purchased a wonderful picture postcard identified as Garfield Bittner. Since it is such a distinctive name, I found two entries for him in the census. Born around 1882 in PA, Garfield is listed in 1910 with his parents Charles W. S. and Sarah Bittner who are farmers. Garfield is married to Lucy. By 1920, Lucy and Garfield live in Meyersdale, Somerset County, PA, and he is a carpenter. They have children Wilbert J. and Marie L. I would like to connect this photo with a family member or family researcher. If you have an interest in this photo, please contact me directly.

Kathy Wieland
Kathy@craftsbykathy.com

Shelby:
Hans Michael who was on the Belander Veron with Heinrich can be either a son from Heinrich's first marriage or a brother. I do not have any information on his first wife other than he married her in Germany. He married our Dorothea after he arrived in America i'm guessing. I descend from his son George, and George's son Benjamin. Our Heinrich had at least 11 kids. He was in his 40's when he was on the Belander Veron.
Walter 'Scott' Bittner
Dayton, Ohio 2007

I could not find any Dennis Bittner's in my family history. I do have some Cober's. The information I have was taken from the Rev. Alvin Alonzo (Brant) Cober book published in 1932. It contains about 1100 ancestors of a John Brant who migrated from Holland and ended up in Donegal Township PA.

Simon Bittner was born in 1850. He lived in BrothersValley, Pa. He is buried at Pine Hill Farm Cemetery. Pine Hill Farm is located in Somerset County Pa (near Flight 94 crash). (Look for Pine Hill Farm Bed and Breakfast). He left an inheritance to his 3 sons. The 2 oldest sons were placed in the Tressler school for Boys by their mother Emma Coleman. The inheritance was $25.00 a year for each son.
