Ira D. Bixler

I am looking for any information on Ira Dean Bixler. He would have been my biological grandfather but left when my mother was three. As far as I know he was born Aug. 21, 1940 and died October 26, 2005 from bone cancer. I know he has a daughter named Mary who was living in Chicago and his mother (my great grandmother) died 1998 if I remember correctly from Alzheimers and was also Mary. As far as I know most of the family was from Illinois. Any help is appreciated as there are some family medical conditions that have gone unanswered. We are aware my mother had an older half brother and Mary was her half sister. Ira, better known as Dean, married several times so this might be a little tricky. At one point he married my grandmother Kay Knauss from Ohio.

Hi! I'm pretty sure we are working on the same family tree. Although I don't believe YOUR William Bixler is MY William Bixler, I do believe they are in the same family...possibly an uncle/nephew relationship. MY William C. Westerfield lived from 1834-1889. I don't have his father's name...but his mother was Sarah or Sallie...1808-1880. He married Mary Jane Hall and had six children...none of whom are Williams. BUT he also had four siblings...Thomas 1841-1865...George Washington 1840-1874...James 1838-1860...then William...and John 1834-1897. I have to wonder if YOUR William might be one of their children...named after his uncle William. ?? The last sibling mentioned (John...1834-1897) had a daughter, who happens to be my great grandma! So that's my connection. Not sure if you're interested in anything else I have, but if you think I might have something you're interested in, you're welcome to e-mail me at ericacheat@att.net.

Yet, no one can tell me when the stone marker was put in place.

In response to YOUR question, Peter's line. I wonder why you're so defensive. I merely pointed out that the 1968 book is full of errors and asked when the stone marker was put in place. If you want to accept and even defend everything you read, so be it. Some people, maybe only people with advanced degrees, prefer to discover the truth.

CB: Yes, all Genealogy books are full of errors, some done by the compiler, others by the printer, and some are just plain lies, done by the folks giving the information to the compiler. I am not a "Penn State anything" but for the most part, the book was a good starting basis considering the fact that no computers were available to the compilers and no resources "on-line" that are at our fingertips.

The stone information is darn near as good as it gets, you can do research and find this to be the case.

Do you know which line you come from your "extensive researching" Send your corrections to the folks in the Bicksler/ Bixler organization so we can all get it right or publish your own family genealogy so we 'Bixler/Bicksler's' can see if you make any errors... quinn136@ptd.net

--Sarah (Bixler) Quinn, not a college graduate, not even in the book, since my father was missed from his family BUT the book is basically a good history for the time, and "We" with all the resources available to us should clear things up for those who wish to get our line "more perfect."

Hi
Lucetta "Lucy" was the daughter of James Bixler b. 5 Apr 1824, Schuylkill Co., PA, died 15 Dec 1901, Northumberland Co., PA and wife, Helena "Nelly" Dietrich/Deitrich born 24 Aug 1821, died 5 Jan 1898 Northumberland Co., PA. (Both are buried in the IOOF (Odd Fellows Cemetery.--may be on-line at www.findagrave.com ?

Lucetta was the 3rd know child of this couple. Her siblings were:
Amanda Bixler (1844-1915) who married Edward Updegrave (1836-1896) who stayed in Schuylkill Co., PA

Elias Bixler (25 Dec 1845) and wife Mary Jane BARNHART who was the daughter of Michael Barnhart and Catherine Zerbe. (she was born 1852 and died 1900) this couple also buried IOOF Cem., Northuberland.
It is possible that Mary Jane was related to Henry, but no proof.

Cyrus Bixler (1848-1865) not married, died at 17, buried Schuylkill Co., PA; Frieden's Cemetery.

Malissa / Melissa Bixler born about 1849 died? married?

Emanuel B. Bixler (1850-1911) wife, Caroline Brodt (1852-1926) They are both buried in Shamokin Cemetery, Northumberland Co., PA

last 3 siblings ELizabeth (c 1852) Ellen (c 1856) and Cinirah (1858) I have no information

(Some of us BIxler descendants think that James was the son of Peter and Sarah Ossman who also lived in Schuylkill Co., PA. BUT there is no proof we have found no baptismal records yet.) Still looking.
Gladys-
I have just come into some information that may be of help to you-I have just received it so I have not had time to check the census records.
Mary Adaline Bixler born 17 June 1846 daughter of Jacob and Sarah Bixler. Mary died in 1919. She married John J. Rice-the family I am researching. They had 4 children:
Edwin Bixler Rice b.1874
Mary Florence Rice b.?
Walter Wesley Rice b.1879, attorney in New Bloomfield PA
Sara Alice Rice b.?
The age is close to your Bixler. Also, if you are looking Perry County PA seems to have a healthy stock of Bixlers.
Nikki Perry
Memphis TN
Hi, we were trying (Years ago) to decide on James parents.
I am still quinn136@ptd.net (and am still looking to solve the "Brick wall" with James.

When weather clears here in PA, plan to go to N'umberland and see if I can find his obituary in the old newspapers there. (or maybe you have done that?) my other options are trying for the Oss/ OSMAN family info. Unless you may have tried that already? We only need a little clue!

Hope you and family have been well, keep in touch Sarah (Bixler) Quinn

As you--sorry it took so long to check back
WOW
This means you(Nancy)would have been my Aunt. I remenber Uncle Johnny from my childhood. My mom (Patsy Cravey) spoke of him as if he were one of her children, a little protective of the younger brother I guess.
I am trying to find any names associated with Daniel and Evelyn Cravey (My Grand Parents) other than their childrens names (I Have those). I seem to be at dead end in my search.

And yes, Patsy moved back to Virginia to live w/ her daughter Patty, were she has since passed (Miss you Mom)

I did a little more research yesterday just to make sure I wasn't directing you on a wrong path.

The William Finley Bixler family is on the 1900 census of Toronto Twp., Woodson County, Kansas as:

Bixler, William F. Head Dec 1856 Indiana Hardware merchant
Ida W. Wife Sep 1865 Ohio
Earl Q. Son Nov 1884 Indiana
Montie M. Dau Jul 1886 Indiana
Maggie E. Dau Nov 1887 Indiana
Beulah P. Dau Sep 1889 Kansas
Bruce Son Nov 1892 Kansas

By 1 Mar 1905 (date of census), the family was living at Iola, Allen County, Kansas as:

Bixler, W. F. Age 46
I. A. 39
Earl 20
Monta 18
Ethel 17
Beulah 15
Bruce 12

Perhaps William had died by 1910.
Thank You for the information Cabincreek. I have just started with the Bixler Family. They are a branch off from my Shipman Family, Earl Q. Bixler married Martha Shipman in 1913 in Howell Co. MO. I have an Obit coming in the mail for Earl that I am hoping will contain more clues.
Thanks again

This is just a guess, but this Earl Bixler may have been the son of William Finley Bixler and Ida Waller. It seems to me that maybe they lived north of Crawford County, perhaps in Bourbon County or Allen County, Kansas. I have never found any connection between this family and Jacob Bixler and his descendants. Jacob lived in Crawford County during the late 1800's, and left a large posterity. Many of Jacob's descendants still live in the area.

Nov. 1973 in Crawford KS. Any information you might have to share would be very much appreciated.

In fact, the lot was not sold to Kezia Clark, it was sold by her. This is what originally made me think there might be a connection between John Bixler and Kezia Clark. The manumission deed (which Jackie brought to my attention via Karen) supports the connection. I have not found a probate record for John Bixler, or a deed whereby he sold the property. So far, it looks like it passed from John Bixler to Kezia Clark without the use of the courts.

John Bixler purchased the lot in 1845 and also loaned money to a neighbor that same year. The following year, the loan was repaid--so I can place John Bixler in Pike County, IL in 1845 and 1846. The first evidence of the Clark family in Pike County is when Kezia's daughter Louisa married Squire McWorter in 1843.

I am also a descendent of this line. I recently saw a posting to Find-A-Grave which also led my search to New Philadelphia, Pike Co., IL. The New Philadelphia, Illinois Landowner Records for Block 3 shows that a John Bixler purchased Block 3, Lot 2 from Frank McWorter in 1845. The lot was then sold in 1859 by a person named Kishia Clark. I'm speculating she may be the same Keshia emancipated by John Bicksler in 1825.

Hi,
I am a descendant of this John Bicksler. Several other descendants and I have been working to solve the mysteries of this family for several years. He (and we believe Louisa and their children) appears on the 1830 census of Green County, Illinois. By 1840 they were living in Upper Loutre (now Wellsville) in Montgomery County, Missouri. I am pleased you may have found some evidence of him in 1845/46. That is a great clue. Please contact me, and I will share the information I have.

I actually have a copy of this book as do most of my siblings. Just to let everyone know--this book is full of errors. There are too many to even list. I teach advanced writing at a Penn State campus and have been doing extensive research on the family.

I do have one question. When was the stone marker put in place and do we have any concrete evidence that the information contained on it is valid?
Carter Bixler

Barbara Peffley was widow of Nicholas Peffley. They arrived in Philadelphia August 29, 1729 on the ship Mortenhouse. Bothe were from Eggiwil, Kanton Bern Switzerland, as were their neighbors the Bichsels (Peter Bixler was in this household)

Nicholas died in 1740-41, apparently killed by indians by Peffley Family lore, and his will was probated when in 1750 Property was transferred. Barbara had remarried to Peter, and apparently moved out of Lancaster County about 1751.

Barbara, (Barbara of Bern) who some believe had a surname of Werthmer and some call "Barbara Barne" is not found in the peffley records after the mention in the property registration of 1750. Her daughter also named Barbara, changed her name to Bixler, apparently. The other Peffley children remained as Peffley.

Part of this Peffley family was in Botetourt County Virginia by 1790, and later spread out to Ohio, and Indiana.

Dear Don,

I'm Christine Martha Nelson, and was very interested to see that you have letters and photos of the Bixler family. My grandfather, Lee Bixler, was Carrie Bixler's brother. I'm the daughter of Helen Bixler Nelson. In the 1960's, our family traveled from Wisconsin to visit Carrie in Pennsylvania.

Please let me know if you are still seeking a home for your collection of Bixler items. I would be very happy to accept them if you are, and would pay for shipping. We have some Bixler family records and photographs and can share copies if you wish.

My husband, Fred Burwell, is an archivist at Beloit College and has posted the Burwell family tree on ancestry.com which includes Bixlers. If we can help with your family research, please let me know.

You can contact me via email at nelsoncn@beloit.edu or my husband at burwellf@beloit.edu

Thank you.
