I have a photograph of Mathilda Bjorkman dated January 24, 1841. This Mathilda Bjorkman is the mother of Charles Emil Caulsen, so I suspect it is a different Bjorkman. I have a photograph of her husband as well, but not his name. There is a connection to Swensons-- Casper, John, Stava, Christina, Anna Lisa, Betty, and Gustav, brothers and sisters. But I can't figure it out.

Burkman/Bjorkman - Sweden to Illinois

I'm wondering if anyone has any information on Gustav Bjorkman b. circa 1840 who came from Sweden 12 June 1868 on the ship City of New York with his wife Melane Haed (b. 1838). He came with a Carl & Maria Bjorkman, don't know if they are related.

Gustav & Melane settled in Leepertown Township, Bureau Co. IL and had Oscar (1870), Hilma (b. 1872, m. Adolph Johnson), Minnie (b. 1876), Willie (b. 1879) and Ed Wilhelm (b. 1880). They changed their name to Burkman sometime before the 1880 census.

A Nels Bjorkman also settled in Illinois around the same time and could also be related.

Any help would be appreciated,
dorrie
Bjorkman Brodd Meanings

Hi, Bjorkmans!

My ggGrandmother Mathilda Bjorkman Brodd was born in Odeshog Parish, Ostergotland, Sweden in 1832 to a never-wed woman, Anna Stina Andersdotter. Mathilda took the surname Bjorkman when she left home (so did her sister), but in their case, Bjorkmans seem to have been a family who "adopted" them as Samuel Bjorkman signed for her when she married ggGrandpa Anders Brodd in 1862. And, altho' I've found no homevisit records for them yet, these Bjorkmans seemed to be from Walby/Wallbergs, Vaderstad as that's what they listed in the flyttns.

For those not familiar: both Brodd and Bjork were Swedish Army names ~ something had to be chosen other than the common patronymic surname so that the community would know who the soldier was to alert if needed.

Brodd means something like horseshoe nail (cavalry), and Bjork means birch tree ~ like someone standing firm and tall. Some Bjorkmans also have their roots (pun intended) there as sometimes the military surname was kept (as my family did), but often reverted back in subsequent generations.

When Mathilda died in Wisconsin in 1908, her son listed her maiden name as "Birkman," but that could've been the recorder's spelling.

We have found absolutely NO pictures of Mathilda. The one we have of Anders shows him to be fair and between two horses. Many of the 100% Swedish cousins are dark and look like siblings, so we guess this is how Mathilda looked.

If any of these people sound familiar, I'd sure love to connect with anyone having more family data!

Judy Martin

Hi,

I'm hoping someone may be able to help me trace an ancestor named Karl Bjorkman. he was a sailor on a ship (possibly english) that came to the Nelson area in New Zealand in the 1840's to early 1850's. Karl jumped ship and changed his name to John Charles. He became naturalised in 1857 and married a Mary Anne North. they settled in the Nelson / Golden Bay area. Any help in tracing dob and where he was born would be great.

Cheers
K. Charles

Looking for any descendents of Andreas and Gustava Bjorkman. Three children have been confirmed, although there is said to be many. These children are: Hjalmar, Nora, and Hilmar.
Andreas was born in 1836, and Gustava was born in 1839 (according to Norway's 1900 Census).
Hjalmar was born in 1872.
Nora was born in 1876. She married Harald Sondee before 1901, and they came to the U.S. with their children. Known children are: Ragnar (who married Mildred), Svea, Victor, Esther, Oscar, and Grace. Harald and Nora lived and died in Florida.
Hilmar was said to have escorted his sister and her children to the U.S. He then sent for his fiancee, Ragnhild Emily Sjoholm, and married in Illinois. They had four children: Roland, Ivan, Earl, and Esther (I am Esther's daughter). Emily and Hilmar moved to California in the 1940's and lived the remainder of their lives there.
I administer a private family site and am searching for ancestors of these Bjorkmans.
Just a tidbit from MI: We have a Johanna Bjorman (spelling may be wrong tho) marrying Charles Johnson, living in Marquette Co (UP in MI) by 1871 because they had a son Hjalmar Albert born then. You did not list daughters, just curious if she could be related. I have nothing more on her.

My husband's grandparents moved to Oregon, USA from Sweden. When they arrived, they dropped the "j" to help pronunciation. My father-in-law discovered the original name while in college and reinsterted it.

Looking for any links to Bjorkmans in IA

My great-grandparents immigrated to the US sometime in the early 1900's. My great-grandmother came here in 1914, I believe, and her name was Ida Nilson. I can't find any information on my great-grandfather, and have no living relatives to ask. From the little I know, they lived in Chicago at one point, and in Iowa. Children included my grandfather, Glenn Bjorkman.

Any information would be appreciated.

borkman = bjorkman?

Hi,

I've just started poking about looking for some family history. I found 6 billion message boards for various B-surnames, but no Borkman.

What is the relationship between Borkman and Bjorkman. My family is from Estonia, and I thought it might be a simple anglisisation, but then there's the Ibsen play John Gabriel Borkman, which makes me think that the name is a non-rare Scandinavian/Baltic one.

Any clues?

My father, Heino, fled Estonia for Australia in the late twenties, I think.

ALl correspondence appreciated.

thanks,
Lee (Leigh) Borkman
380 Moreton Park Rd
Menangle 2568
Australia
