Lucy Ann BLACK, b. AL ? -- Father Charles Reginald BLACK

I'm looking for someone who can help me find the necessary contacts to get going on my great-grandmother's branch of our family tree. Her name was Lucy Ann Black. She was probably born in Alabama--at least her father, Charles Reginald Black, was a minister there before the Civil War. He is said to be a brother or cousin to Hugo Black, but I can't find the connection--if this is so. Charles Reginald had several children--Lucy's siblings--but I know none of their names. Lucy Married Author (I believe he spelled it that way) Thompson McDaniel, said to be a Scotsman. She had five children by him, two of whom were named Anne and Callie. Then he died and she married my great grandfather, John Samuel Smith. As you can imagine, I'm having a difficult time tracing him. By him, she had two children, Linus Samuel "Hoss" Smith and Carrie Smith, who grew up and married a man named Mallow. LInus married twice. His first wife was Fanny Lou Reeves. By her he had Bill, Mary, and Morgan Smith, all of whom would be in their 80's, if living. then he married Callie Dora Keeth, by whom he had Samuel Linus Smith and Ira Smith Springer. These two are also dead, but would be in their high 70's, if living.
Carrie had sons named Flynn, Watson, Richard, and Buddy. She had daughters named Beatrice and Katherine. I think there were others, but these are the names I have. I believe some of her family settled in Texas.

Lucy Ann Black McDaniel Smith lived her last days in a neat little house in Stonewall, Oklahoma, which is in Pontotoc County. I have been unable to locate her grave, but I am assured she was buried there in the 1930's. Linus Samuel predeceased his mother, dying of unknown causes in 1921, and leaving behind five small children. He is buried in Crystal, Oklahoma, in Choctaw County.

There are so many things I'd like to know, first and foremost the names of Lucy's siblings and the name of her mother. Because an aged cousin told me her mother told her (in the 30's) that there was a relationship between her family and Hugo Black's, I'm assuming this Black family originates in Clay County, as Hugo's biography identifies that as his county of origin in Alabama.

This is a long-winded letter, and I apologize. But is there ANYBODY out there who finds anything familiar in all this???

Thanks, Shirley

Migration of BLACK Families -- NC > SC > AL > AR

About three years ago, when I began to research the BLACK surname in Butler Co.. Alabama, I read an article from the Arkansas Historical Quarterly (1953) called "The Blacks of Union Co. (Arkansas)" by Annie Laurie Spencer (Thanks to Karen Hicks Diard, Barbara Middleton, and Doc C. Jones for my copies). I've not been able to link my Blacks to these Blacks (yet), but I suspect they could be connected somehow.

In 1840 there were only three families with the surname BLACK in Butler Co., Alabama. One was the family of Thomas Jefferson Black (who is known to be connected to the Blacks in the aforementioned article); the second was the family of my ggg-gm Widow Mary Black; and the third was the family of Hugh Black (likely brother of Widow Mary's husband). It's possible all three of these BLACK families were related, although Thomas Jefferson Black arrived in Butler Co. (1819) before Mary and Hugh (1830s).

Some of the Blacks in the article who migrated to Wilcox (and Butler) Co., Alabama descended from Blacks of Mecklenberg Co., NC. Some of the Blacks of Mecklenburg Co. NC migrated to neighboring county--Lancaster Co., SC--likely place of origin of my ggg-gm Widow Mary Black and Hugh Black before they migrated to Butler Co., Alabama.

I recently found the article on line and thought others might like to read it at--

http://peace.saumag.edu/swark/articles/ahq/union_co/blacks/b...

A few of the surnames in the article other than BLACK are Norris, Cooper, Perdue, Conner, Perry, Wallace, Rayford, Munsford, Davis, Williams, Carter, Sanders, Burke, and many others.

Andrew Smith Black - South Carolina - Texas

Andrew Smith Black born in South Carolina is my g-g-grandfather. We have traced him to the 1870 Alabama Census where he was living in Sanford Co., with his wife Mary A Lane, children John Thomas Black, James Wm Black, Martha Pauline Black, Henry B Black, and mother-in-law, Nancy Lane. The family moved to Arkansas around 1874 and then to Texas around 1879. The oldest son John Thomas moved to Oklahoma in the late 1880's. Would anyone have any information on any of the family either in Oklahoma, Alabama, or South Carolina. We have been searching for years!

Are ANY of these BLACKs in your family line?

You may not know about the ancestry of your family member, PLEASE, read all of the following, because they COULD tie into your family lines.

I am trying to find ANYONE that is researching any of the following:

Alexander (Alex) Hillman Black, b. 12 Aug 1851, Ireland; d. 1 May 1929, Vancouver, BC, Canada. His parents were James Black (born in Scotland) and Mary Hillman (born in Ireland). Reportedly, he was born in Ulster. he was a member of the Orange Order in Manitoba, and was reputed to be a "remittance man", paid an annual stipend NOT to return home.

He married Jemima Johnston about 1875 in Canada. The had the following children, all born on a farm in Greenridge/Arnaud, Manitoba, Canada:

James Alexander Black, b. 11 Jun 1877, d. 12 Dec 1901 in Winnipeg. Married Annie Bertha Hodgins (1879- ) 12 Jun 1899 in Winnipeg.

Mary Ann (Marie) Black, b. 10 May 1879; m. 1) John Hector (Jack) Stewart (1878-1908), Franklin, Manitoba, one child that died young; 2) Alexander Foulds (her cousin) (1875- ?)on 13 Dec 1912 in Vancouver, BC; 2 children: Clinton E. Annie Pearl Reid 18 Feb 1914 in Franklin, Manitoba

Elizabeth Esther Black, b. 19 Mar 1884; m. He is buried in the Military Cemetery in Thelus, Pas de Calais, France.

Ethel Martha (or Mildred) Black, b. 23 Jul 1889 (NOTE: She claimed to have been born in 1890, but on 2 seperate Canadian censuses, her date of birth is listed as 1889). She died 5 Aug 1977 in Portland, Oregon. She married 1) Peter Norman Stewart (1881-1958) and had 4 children, divorced and married 2) Richard L. Fry (1882-1949). Roy Wilmet McEwen, 28 Nov 1923 in Vancouver, BC, Canada, 2 known children: Violet B. McEwen and Elmer W.McEwen

I would very much like to connect with anyone that descends from ANY of the above people. I have some data on a few of these people, and a great deal of data on the Stewart line.

If anyone does descend from any of these folks, they are also part Native American, as Jemima Johnston was Métis, descending from James Johnston and and Mary Foulds who were both at least half indian.

Morris-Black Families of SC, GA, AL and Choctaw/Attala Cos. MS

Hello,

I am helping my cousins research their Morris and Black families. My Aunt Jo (who is really my older cousin)knows very little about her father's family since she was a little girl when her father died. I have gathered some information from census data but need to know more about them.

My Aunt's father was Sanford VanBuren Morris. His parents were John Wesley Morris who married Luanna Black in 1892 in Choctaw Co., MS. He was born ca. 1870 in GA and died ca. 1930 in Weir. Luanna was born ca. 1873 in Attala Co., MS.

John Wesley Morris's father was Isaac Morris, b. ca. 1845 in GA and d. ca. 1929 in Weir, Choctaw Co., MS. He married Angeline Black. From census data, I believe her mother was Susan (mnu), but I have nothing on her father. Angeline probably died in Weir. The 1900 census data for Choctaw Co. shows that Angeline had a sister named Evaline Black Woods.

I believe from census data that Luanna Black Morris's (wife of John Wesley Morris) parents were Martin V. Black and Harriet Rebecca Pilcher. Martin was born ca. 1841 in AL. Harriet was born ca. 1848 in MS. The family was living in Wier in 1900.

Martin V. Black's parents were John E. Black and Elinor/Ellen/Ellender. John was born ca. 1805 in SC, and Ellen was born ca. 1808 in SC. They apparently lived in GA in the early 1830s since census data indicates that their eldest children were born there. By 1850, the family was living in Attala and continue to appear on censuses in Attala through at least 1880.

I would greatly appreciate additional data on these families that anyone is willing to share. I would like to learn more about John E. Black, his wife's maiden name, and the area of SC in which he was born.

Sincerely,
Catherine

Elizabeth Black m. Alexander Mitchell in 1840 Old Monkland

From bits of Mitchell family records and Internet postings of Scots data, I have a line of Mitchell back to Elizabeth Black and Alexander Mitchell who were married on February 22, 1840, in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire. (Mitchell family history--which might be faulty--identifies Elizabeth as Mary.)

Alexander and Elizabeth had James (b. April 1841 and buried in Appanoose County, Iowa, in 1917), Francis (March 28, 1843), Alexander (June 11,1845 my greatgrandfather, also buried in Appanoose), John Mitchell (b. April 25, 1847), and Andrew (b.February 13, 1851). So far as I can tell, all the children were born in Old Monkland in Lanarkshire. There might have been other children.

My greatgrandfather Alexander (b. 1845) married Margaret Sarah Foryst Prentice Gilfilan MacPhee (b. 1852) in Old Monkland in 1872. They came to America in the early 1880s and settled in Lucas, Iowa, later moving to Centerville.

Are there any Blacks who can tie into my Mitchells and suggest a line of ancestry from Elizabeth? Can some Black give me some more information about Elizabeth's children?

Sincerely,
John Mitchell 11mitchell@mchsi.com

David & Martha BLACK -- From Donegal to PA

I am researching the family of David and Martha Black from Donegal who moved to Pennsylvania due to the potatoe famine in 1845. David and Martha were born in 1798. Martha's maiden name was Cheatley. They lived in an area called Trenta just north of Letterkenny. David and Martha had 7 children whose names were as follows;
John born 1824, Alexander born 1826, Ann Jane born 1829, Elizabeth born 1832, Sarah born 1836, David born 1839 and Matilda born 1842.
The family first lived in the Cass township Pottsville area and eventually settled in Centralia Pa. I have tracked down all living relatives of 5 of these children. The two childrens families that are yet to be found are John Black born in 1824 and Ann Jane born in 1829. Thier offspring would have come from the Schuylkill County Pennsylvania area. Any help in finding them is appreciated

I can only get what appears to be reliable information back to about 1905 in Portland Oregon for William Archibold Black 1875-1942.

They are my ancestors through their son, James, through his son, James Gavin/Gowan Pursley. James G. is my gt-gt-grandfather.

It appears through the research of Keith Dull and Wes Patterson that Gavin's parents were Matthew & Mary Black. Has anyone determined if they were originally from Ireland?

I have been told that Gow-ann is the Gaelic pronounciation of Gavin. Because of my gt-gt-grandfather's middle name being spelled so many ways by my family, I did some research.

According to the Marion Daily Star Dec 4, 1894 Rebecca Spencer married A. A. Black in 1852 in Ross Co., Ohio. They divorced a few years later and then remarried in 1894. Rebecca had two other marriages between these events, first to James Gibbs and then Lyman Jarvis. I am trying to locate marriage records for both occurences to A. Black. I believe a son, Wesley, was born during the first Black marriage. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you,

Frances Cope, California

IN in the census 1850, 60, 70, and 80.
Children are
1 Ellen Lorina b. 1844 OH m. William Henry Underhill- migrated to McCune, Crawford Co. KS
2 George b. abt. 1847 OH
3 William M. b. jan 1850 IN
4 Sarah Jane b. abt. 1852 IN
5 Mary A. b. abt 1855 IN m. Black b. abt. 1862

2 of the sons migrated to Washington state before 1913.
1880 Census gives Benjamin's parents both b.
BLACK - Joseph Jr, in the Navy 1945, others

Hi all! I have a Lost and Found on my website, where I post items that MAY be possible for people to link to their families. Since I've come across some BLACKs, I thought I'd post and try to find it a home.

The item is a postcard addressed to Mrs Joseph BLACK in Worcester, Massachusetts from Joseph BLACK (Junior, I assume) postmarked 1945. Posted free - as a member of the US Navy, which might be a clue. Mentions Phil and Russ, who I am only guessing are BLACKs as well. :-)

I AM trying to sell it, but only for the price I paid for it plus shipping - and if you don't want to buy it, you can still take a copy of it from the site, free. You can see it at http://annalovesbooks.com/lostfound20.html and the entire Lost and Found at http://annalovesbooks.com/genealogy.html

Thanks!
Anna

Elizabeth BLACK/BLAKE, Kittery Maine related to William Black?

Family Search has Elizabeth (Betsey)BLAKE/BLACK CALL b. 1805 in Kittery, Maine and died in 1892 probably in Kittery.

She married Joseph Call b. 1801, Kittery ME.

They had daughter Elizabeth who marries George W PATCH, (b. 1809, d. 1896 York, ME) in June of 1833.

But there is other information that has Elizabeth BLAKE CALL born about 1792 in Kittery, ME. She shows up in the 1880 census for Kittery, ME at age 88.

We have a hint that Elizabeth BLAKE/BLACK might have been the daughter of Henry and Sarah Spinney Black of Eliot, ME, which for awhile was considered Kittery, which makes everything confusing. There are also too many Elizabeth's, Sarah's and Henry's to keep track of.

Many African American Blacks changed their name to BLAKE.

Does anyone have a definite ancestry on Elizabeth BLACK.
Is she descended from the Harpswell, ME Black's, who were descended from William Black of Kittery, freed African American slave of the Shapleigh Family?

Here is a great site on the African American Black's of Maine
http://www.blazenetme.net/~phloors/black.htm

Blin

W. D. Black kills his father-in-law J. W. Ausbrooks

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 16 June 1904, Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

BLACK KILLS HIS FATHER-IN-LAW

Tragedy Occurred Monday Evening in Which W. D. Black Shot and Killed J. W. Ausbrooks, his Father-in-Law. Story of killing.

The first tragedy that has ever occurred in or near Wapanucka took place Monday afternoon about 4 o’clock, two miles southwest of town on the farm of the Fountain Land & Loan Co., in which W. D. Black shot and killed J. W. Ausbrooks, his father-in-law.

From the story of the members of the family, who were eye witnesses to the crime, it seems that the marriage union of Black and wife, who is a daughter of the dead man, had never been one of pleasure and happiness, they having parted once, and that trouble had been brewing for sometime. The evening of the tragedy, Black was at the house where he and wife lived with his father-in-law, Ausbrooks, and according to the story, as told by the women, started out to have a general row and general killing. His wife was nursing a little sister and he demanded of her to put it down, against which she protested, when he grabbed the baby from her and threatened to murder it. The child’s mother, Mrs. Ausbrooks, appeared upon the scene about this time and when she dared to take her baby to her arms Black gave her a blow, knocking her down and cutting an ugly gash on her forehead. By this time Ausbrooks, who was plowing in the field nearby, had heard the screams of the woman and was coming to the house to see what was the matter. Black, after knocking down his mother-in-law, grabbed up a shotgun and started out, meeting Ausbrooks nearby, who asked him what was the matter. Black demanded that Ausbrooks stand back and not close in on him. Ausbrooks slowly advanced pleading with him to lay down the gun and talk over the difficulty with him, when without a moments warning Black threw up his gun and emptied a load of shot into Ausbrooks’ body, killing him instantly.

Neighbors working nearby heard the screams of the women and rushed to the scene of the trouble. The news of the killing was brought to town and Marshal Criswell hurried to the place but met Black just outside of town coming in to surrender. He was arrested and carried to Atoka and placed in jail.

Ausbrooks, the dead man, was 44 years of age, was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church, was a hard working farmer and a good citizen. He leaves wife and five children, all girls. The dead man’s body was laid to rest in Wells Valley Cemetery Tuesday.

Black, the man who committed the crime, is 37 years of age, and had no children by his wife. He came to Indian Territory with his wife about a year ago from Tennessee, and Ausbrooks and family came in October of last year from Portland, the same state.

The family of women are left almost penniless, without help what ever except the kind assistance of neighbors, and their condition, as a result of the tragedy, presents a heart sickening aspect. In a moment, without notice, here, one man picks up a shotgun and wipes another from existence, and now a father and husband, a hard working man who had bright prospects before him and hopes for the future, lays beneath the sod; a son-in-law is in jail on the road to the gallows or the penitentiary for life; a family of women left grief stricken, to live a blighted life without hopes or happiness in the future.

James and John Black arrested for pushing Brakeman off train

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 13 October 1904, Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

WERE TRAIN ROBBERS

Men Who Threw Brakeman From Train Prove to be Train Robbers

Lawton: Three men giving their names as James and John Black and John Murphy, who were arrested in the Indian Territory recently for pushing a brakeman from a Rock Island train near Walter, seriously injuring him, have been positively identified by an express messenger of the Santa Fe Railroad and a business man of Duncan as the men who help up a train at Tucumcari, New Mexico, about two months ago. They have been placed in the federal jail at Chickasha. By the use of dynamite the robbers attempted to blow the safe in the express car. Failing in this they relieved the passengers of their money and valuables. They then escaped across the Panhandle of Texas and recently came into Oklahoma, where in an attempt to beat their way on a train, they were compelled to knock the brakeman overboard in order to make good their escape. They are rough looking men, very uncouth in appearance.

Hello, my GGG Grandfather, Henry Jno Black, was born in Kentucky 1800-1810 census records show his father was born in Kentucky also.Like you, I'm also looking for his family,is it possible there might be a connection? Henry married ? Brown. Their son James W. married Mary E. Barr. From this point down I have alot of this BLACK family history. I've discovered they moved around quite a bit.
Ellsworth Co, Kansas - Black and Lingo (Spears) families

--------

Anyone have a Mr Black that had a illegitimate child around May 1916 in Ellsworth Co., KS? Mr Black was already married, but had an affair with another woman...who gave birth to a boy. Mr Black stayed with his wife, and the "other woman" went pack to her parents. The "other woman" was only 20yrs old at the time, Laura May Lingo. The illegitimate child was Elvin Woodrow "Woody"...raised as a "Spears" by his step-father, Earl Reed Spears.

Sound familiar?

We do not know if Mr Black ever had anything to do with his illegitimate child. It was just recently discovered by the family that "Woody" was really a Black, and not a Spears.
Samuel BLACK -- Ireland > VA

I am looking for the birthplace of Samuel Black, who came to Virginia and had two sons, William and John. Blacksburg Virginia.

I will be in Ireland next week end and am going to several cemetaries in Northern Ireland and will take as many pictures of headstones that I can...so it would be helpful if I can make this connection with the BLACKs.
