No unfortunately the website has not been replaced. The site was the joint efforts of several very dedicated researchers who recognized that we could be more effective working together and sharing our information, than working alone. The website was the best way to share.
In the twelve years since that project began, both AOL and GeoCities have done away with their free sites.
At least one of the group has passed away and the others have lost touch.
Most of the shared information was pertaining to the Curnutte Family which is another one of my family lines. But without the permission and help of the others I can not post their research.
My research continues and I hope to put it all to paper, so it is not lost to future generations.
Good luck with your research.

Linda Reed Smith
Hello,

I ran across several of your posts and tried to link to the referenced website, but AOL shut it down. I'm curious whether you've opened another one.

I'm a descendant of Benjamin Zachariah. My father has the first mathbook written in the State of Kentucky by James Kennedy Blackburn.

I'm interested in the following entry in "The Complete Book of Emigrants in Bondage 1614 - 1775" by Peter Wilson Coldham: Benjamin Blackburn, sentenced to transportation, 14 years, Sep - Oct 1772, Middlesex, England.

Thanks,

David Blackburn

Elizabeth A. Blackburn-Hunter

My great-grandparents were John Henry Hunter and Elizabeth A. Blackburn-Hunter. They were both born, raised and married in England and moved to Pennsylvania in 1882. Some of their kids were: John, Minnie, Anna, Pearl, and Margaret. They had more but I don't have the names. After John Henry died, Elizabeth and the remaining kids moved to Battle Creek, MI and, I think, later in life, Elizabeth moved to MO where she died. John Henry Hunter was born Nov. 1857 and Elizabeth A. Blackburn was born Nov. 1858. Any help you can give me will be GREATLY appreciated!

The listing of graves of the Presbyterian Church of Ormstown show she was b. in 1804. From another source, I found she was b. 4 Aug 1803. At the time of the 1817 letter that Dick Barr refers, she would have been only 13 or 14 years of age. And she has young children at that age???? I might believe a child, but children??? It seems a stretch for me.

Emeline Blackburn (1861-1910), Georgia

Emeline BLACKBURN was born May 1861 in Georgia and died in 1910. She married Jesse Walton BLACKSTONE in 1882, place unknown. She is found in 1900 census in Athens, Clark County, Georgia and is listed with her children: Inez (1897-1987), Maggie (1885-), Jesse (1892-1934), Frank Carlton (1888-1967)and Flory.

Emeline is my wife's great-grandmother, her grandmother is Inez. I am searching for Emeline's parents. I found a Elijah Lig BLACKBARN (~1835-), in the 1880 census, District 119, Richmond, Georgia, who has a daughter Emeline and who may or may not be the correct father of our Emeline.

Jesse Walton BLACKSTONE (4 Sep 1861-1952)is the son of Martin Van Buren BLACKSTONE Sr. (1838-1930) and Sarah UNKNOWN (1840-1896). Martin's parents were James BLACKSTONE (abt 1794-1885) and Rebecca NEWMAN (abt 1800-aft 1880).

If anyone has any information on Emeline BLACKBURN, please let me know. I would be happy to share information on any of the descendents.

Thanks.

I have looked at the Internet and here is what I found about John Blackburn and Martha Harrison, both born 1800 in N.C,. They married circa 1819 in N.C. and had about 14 children, with their first 9 being born in N.C.. About 1837 they moved to Gibson Co., Tenn. and had 5 more children born there. They were listed on the 1850 census there, with a son William living 2 doors away. They were in District 11, house 2380. After that census I have been unable to find them anyplace. Likewise I have been unable to find some of their younger sons. Perhaps they were killed in the Civil War. I am not related to this family. Sorry, that I have been unable to find out more about them.
Re: Does Blackburn family from Oklahoma have indian background?

I believe the Blackburn family originated in England, there is a city in England named Blackburn. My Blackburn Family is from Lawrence and Pike Counties, Kentucky.

There were marriages between Indians and whites in this area. Many times Indian woman took Christian names, which makes it almost impossible to follow the linage. In my case, there was an Indian woman named Elizabeth who married a Blackburn. Many times people of mixed races were referred to as Melugeons, which could be Indian & white, black & white, or even darker skinned individuals from other countries such as Portugal. Lawrence Co. KY History & Genealogy web site which has a link dedicated to tracing Indian Ancestry. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~churn/na.h.... There you will find information on Books, Query Forms and links to the National Archieves.

I have found several items very important in tracing ancestors, one is to know when a State and County became a State or County, ie: KY was once part of VA. In 1776 the state of Kentucky was Kentucky Co., VA., it became a State in 1792. Lawrence Co., was not formed till 1822. Family records prior to 1822 could be filed in Floyd Co. or in Green Co. There is an excellent computer program called Anti Map which will show you the progression of each state and county. It also has an overlay with longitude & latitute. Recently I have been documenting family cemeteries locations using my GPS.

Knowing Migration routes is also helpful, there were specific routes of travel through the mountains which settlers used, as well as waterways. There is a book by Dollarhide that documents these migration routes.

There also were specific places that Settlers would stop for the winter, referred to as "Stopping Off Points", as travel through the mountains in the winter months was impossible. Many times family members would not continue on in the spring, maybe the older family members would decide that traveling on was too difficult due to age or health reasons, sometimes young people would marry and remain behing with their new spouse. Tazewell, VA was one of these stopping off points. Looking at the files for those stopping off points may reveal some missing family members.

Bounty Lands is another factor, Soldiers who fought for VA during the Revolutionary War were given Bounty Lands in KY based on their rank.

Immigration Ports is also another important factor, it is easy to assume that Ellis Island is the main port of entry. Millions of people came through Ellis Island between 1822 - 1954.

But Philadelphia was an important port of entry in the late 1600's and 1700's as was Boston. When you look at the Migration Routes, you see that Kings Highway ran from Boston, MA to Charleston, SC stopping in all major cities along the way such as New York, Philadelphia, Williamsburg, VA, with it's first travel documented in 1673.

During the great Potatoe Famen in Ireland in 1845, many Irish came to America, some came through Canada as the fare to Canada was less than it was to America.

I hope these facts are helpful to some of you, I apologize for getting off tract. I am sure many of you are well aware of these things.

Have a great day everyone.
Linda

I shared with my husband the information and he corrected me that his grandfather and father were both called Tom, and his great-grandfather who was married to Tenna was called Will. I show Tenna's parents as John Wesley Blackburn 1839 and Susan Ollie Barnes 1850. John Wesley Blackburn's parents were John Blackburn 1812 and Cynthia 1822.
William Thomas Johnson, born 1889, is my husband's grandfather. Interesting that you knew him as Tom. We were under the impression that William Thomas Johnson, Sr. went by Will (listed that way on Tenna's death certificate as spouse) and William Thomas Johnson, Jr., (my husband's father) went by Tom.
Where we connect is at Barbara Boozer. G. W. Blackburn's grandmother Lydia was a widow who married second a widower, John Hughey in Abbeville, SC. Hugheys and Boozers are my paternal line. My gggrandfather, Jefferson Edmond Hughey married Barbara Boozer's sister, Sophia Caroline. They all came to Grimes County, Texas by way of Calhoun (Benton) County Alabama prior to the Civil War. Ethel Clark was distantly related to my family - I remember her as going by the name Blackburn but do not know for sure if they were married. For many years my father leased land from Miss Ethel and later purchased that land from her heirs. I hope this helps.

Evelyn

Joel Blackburn, Blount County, Oneonta, Alabama

From The Blount Countian, 8-5-2009,
Oneonta, AL 35121

Museum gets 1790s family Bible

by Wallace Todd
Invaluable Bible carefully preserved George Washington was president of the United States; Tennessee was admitted to the Union as the 16th state; a young upstart named Napoleon Bonaparte was positioning himself as the Emperor of France; and the birth of Joel Blackburn was being recorded in a family Bible now archived in the Blount County Memorial Museum.

Larry Brewer of Oneonta donated the Bible to the museum recently in hopes that, first, it would be preserved for future generations to appreciate, and second, it would be useful in tracing families’ genealogy.

The book contains birth records of members of the Blackburn, Hulett, Pearson, Brewer, and Mize families – names that are familiar to many Blount Countians.

It is almost a sacred experience for history buffs to open and look at a publication that has been preserved for more than 200 years. It was printed when each letter of every word was handset in type, the finished product inked and pressed onto the paper. It was a time when births recorded in a family Bible were as official as any government issued birth certificate. Therefore, it is official: Joel Blackburn, whoever he was, was born on Dec. 12, 1794.
A treasure for genealogists

Re: William Gregory Blackburn

The England & Wales FreeBMD Birth Index accessible at Ancestry.com reports that the birth of William Gregory Blackburn was registered in the West Derby District of
Lancashire, England during the 4th quarter of 1879, and that the birth of Minnie Louisa Rigby was registered in the Birmingham District of Warwickshire during the 2nd quarter of that same year (1879).

Also, the FreeBMD Marriage Index reports that the marriages of William Gregory Blackburn and Minnie Louisa Rigby (presumably to each other) were recorded in the Liverpool District of Lancashire during the 4th quarter of 1899.

Additionally, the 1901 Census for District 3, Orrell & Ford civil parish, Lancashire, England (also accessible at Ancestry.com) lists household 217 at 24 Glynn St. including: 1) William Blackburn, head, 22, Joiner Carp., worker, b Chorley Lancashire. 2) Minnie Blackburn, wife, 22, b Bimingham Warwickshire. 3) George Rigby, brother, 17, steward assistant, worker, b Birmingham Warwickshire. 4) James Rigby, brother, 14, coppersmith apprentice, worker, b Birmingham Warwickshire.

While the census listings identify George and James Rigby as brothers of the head of household (William Blackburn), it appears that they should have been more properly identified as his brothers-in-law. -- Charles A. (Al) Blackburn, Catonsville, MD, USA

Do you have documentation of William's marriage to Jennie Maynard? I have not found anything yet. I'm wondering if Jennie was William's fisrt wife and maybe she passed away and then William married Virginia. I'm just throwing this theory out there because it seems more likely that she died than that they divorced.

Any input is welcome.

Rebecca
