Stephen and Barbara,
A quick look at the revisions in Calvin Blacklock's book
says" According to Bill Edward Blalock in his book 'Blalock's, Virginia to Harrison County, Texas and Beyond," most of the Blalocks share the same first two Blacklocks in America as common ancestors with the Blacklocks. He refers to the first Blacklock as Thomas Blacklock, Sr. His book throws new light on the first three generarions of Blacklocks in America and lots of light on those who became Blalocks in the fourth and subsequent generations."

Maybe there is something in Bill's book that would answer all questions on the early Blacklocks/Blalocks.
I have not found a copy of the book in the historical libraries of Kentucky or Virginia, so really cannot say what, if any, sources Bill Blalock had, but would love to have the first few chapters just to see what he had to say.

When I finish my present project I will get back with you on Thomas Blacklock.

Linda J.

Barbara,
Thanks for this.
the problem is thatpeople keep listinginfo on the 1st. Thomas but have no recods to verifyany of the information.
the only thing recrds show is hatthis Thomas was in the Esatern Shore of Vir.1623 and 1624. I can not find any other records on this man and suspect e either died young as many did in that early day because conditions were pretty harsh), or he gave up and went back to Scot./Eng., wherever he was from.

Nothing gives a wife's name or any children's names. there dont appear to be any deeds for him as grantor or grantee, there is no will or estate acct. for him.

The younger Thomas is transported from Scot/Eng/ with "wife and child "(unnamed) in 1655 by Southey Littleton, along with 44 others. That can be documented. But the info that he had 2 wives-a Sarah, sometimes listed as Sarah Black, I haven't been able to find verification of. No one has found a mariage record for them and there is nothing that would give her maiden name in Vir. records. Thomas' wife when he made his will was Chistiann (Called "Anne" for short) but what is the source for claiming her maiden name was Scott ?

Thomas had 3 living children when hee made his wll; he only names the eldest Thomas who was an adult. the other 2 were Elizabeth who a. Thomas ser by 1683 and I've been told the probate record also lsts a dau. Frances.

John of New Kent/Hanover Cos., Vir.was not a son of Thomas. He was almost certainly the son of John Blaylock, transported to York Co., Vr. by 1667. York is on the other side of Jamestown from New Kent Co. Some of his desc. list John of 1667 as dying 1725 in New Kent Co. The Vir. family are exclusively Blaylock,at least in the early generations, wherars the Eastern Shore of Vir. and Md. are always Blacklock in the records unttil the late 1700's.

The Esatern Shore was called Accomack from the beginnings of Eng. setlement c. 1620 until 1643 when the namw was changed to Northampton. In 1663 he northern part was separated off and named Accomack Co. All pre 1663 records would be in Northampton.

Steve

Hello! Thanks for resuming this conversation, and to answer your question: We don't know yet. We need more information about William Blacklock: where was he born, when was he born, whom did he marry, what was her maiden name, who were thier children, etc. Also what are the surnames of some of the descendants? If you can provide this basic information, we can move forward. I am currently tracking several different Blacklock lines, and I have a fair amount of information.
Hoping we can connect somewhere...
Barbara

The Harlem Globetrotters go back to the first half of the 20th Century with a rich and storied history. There was a Jimmy Blacklock who played at the University of Texas from 1970 to 1972 (and 2 years of Junior College somewhere else in Texas I believe from 1968 to 1970 which would make him a 1968 high school graduate probably in Texas somewhere). Are we discussing the same Jimmy Blacklock?

I have a hand written journal by Henry Blacklock..appears to be notes for a book or a rough draft of a book. Entitled, "De Fide et Symbolo, Liber"dated: "Easter Term 1888" -- this is the only date on the writing and is under the title on the first written page. What I have read thus far indicates he is a faithful man or perhaps a preacher. Talks of the "strong authority of Apostolic Teaching" The writing is separated by Chapters. There are notes on each chapter at the end of the writing and references to scripture noted.

I've found the same thing you did. What I've noticed in excerpts I've read from Delton Blaylock's book is that he makes a lot of statements and gives no records,no source for them.
I'm beginning to think that the younger Thomas (b. c. 1630,transported to Northampton Co.,Vir.. with wife and child (unnamed)by Southey Littleton in 1656; d. 1678 Accomack) is our ancestor but he probably is not son of the older one in Accomack/Norhampton in the 1623 and 1624 records. I've seen no other records on him. I wonder if he died shortly after 1624, never married and never left any childen in Vir.
Steve

No, not related -- just a BLACKLOCK descendant who hopes to find the "great grand-daddy" of us all. Good luck with that one! I have corresponded with Richard & Mike, and you know who they are, I'm sure.
There are so many Benson Leck Blacklocks, and it's most confusing trying to sort them out. I think I have five of them already. I am trying to sort out who's who. I want to present you with the information I have on them, and hope you will help me there.
Thanks for the links to Sylvia Blacklock and the U-Boats; I had not seen those items before.
More later, Barbara
Do you know about the "Blacklock Gathering" at Facebook?

Hi, just doing some ancestral stuff myself and saw this. I am Benson Leck Blacklock's 3rd cousin 2 times removed, if that is any help. His older brother James Arthur Blacklock also died at a young age in WW2 as a merchant marine 2 years before him. My name is Christopher Eskdale Blacklock and one of my brothers has been working on our family tree for the last 10 years and has managed to drill back to the 1600's so far.
Here's a couple of interesting links you may already have found.

http://www.uboat.net/allies/merchants/crews/person/30133.htm...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/ww2peopleswar/stories/53/a4167353.shtml

We thought there were only 2 boys, but now think perhaps they had other siblings based on this ladies story. There are several Benson Leck Blacklock's in our family as well, one of them died in WW1, so it can get confusing!

Let me know if I can help. I assume you may be related?

-Chris. B.
My ggf was Robert Browning Blacklock. We visited the family homesite and gravesite in Scotland. Do not know much about his family except his brother, Charles. I grew up on a farm next to where Robert lived. Would appreciate any information about the family including the Scotland ancestry.

Mary Blacklock - Dumfries Scotland - Nova Scotia Canada

Mary Blacklock was born in Dumfries. She came to Canada, and married George Barrett in Halifax Nova Scotia May 12, 1836. He arrived in Nova Scotia a few years earlier with his brother John Barrett from Blackthorn, Oxfordshire, England. Her marriage bond was signed by George Barrett and Patrick Walsh - I have no idea who he is - Mary lived to be 100, and died Nov 21, 1914, in Beaver Bank, Halifax County, Nova Scotia. I have found three possibilities for which Mary it could be that was born around the right time for her to be 100 when she died:
1. Mary Blacklock - Sep 12, 1814, daughter of John Blacklock/Jean Ritchie - have also seen this as Jean Richardson
2. Mary Blacklock - July 9, 1815, daughter of Archibald Blacklock/Isobel Bell
3. Mary may be related to the Blacklock family that came from Scotland to Little Shemogue, Westmorland County, New Brunswick.

If anyone has any clues about this Mary, I would appreciate hearing from you.

I did find Arthur & Margaret's marriage at BC vital statistics, and began to wonder whether someone in your family has a Bible. ?. The only "clue" I might look at would be to consider whether John used his middle name Henry rather than his given name John. My father-in-law was born John Henry _____, changed his name to Henry John_____, and then finally to Harry John______. But knowing him, Harry suited him better than Henry or John would have!
If you care to keep me posted, please do.
Barbara
Hi, Barbara.
I've researched the William Blacklock family for 25 years.
I can trace my family back to 1870- Frederick Blacklock in Wilkes County, Georgia.

I am trying to make a connection to William John and his daughters.
Hi Barbara :) Arthur lived and married in New Westminster, Vancouver, British Columbia. He married Margaret Ann Gillard, also originally from England - Dorset I think- in 1911 there. I dont know if any of his siblings May(or Mary), John Hy, Herbert, Helen, William, or Florrie, eventually emigrated - They are all listed in Sussex St in Salford Manchester in the 1901 English Census - Helen, his wife is not however so I am thinking maybe she passed away between 1891 and 1901. Arthur was in Africa with the Boer War at this time. His father John is still in Sussex St listed in the 1911 England Census Summary Books as residing with 2 sons and 2 daughters. Thankyou for your reply to me. Do you have any clues?

Hello Debra -- I am a BLACKLOCK descendant interested in Willim of Charleston because of this piece of information:

Source: "The Original Scots Colonists of Early America, 1612-1783" --- Blacklock, William, b. 1751, farmer, res. Dumfries-shire; sh. Oct 1774 fr. Greenock to Charleston, S.C. in the COUNTESS. (Public Record Office, London #T47.12) by David Dobson, St. Andrew's, SCT., 1988.

William of Charleston resided at Dumfriesshire, from whence came my BLACKLOCKs, not to Charleston but to Ontario, Canada. I wonder if there is a link between my BLACKLOCKs and William of Charleston, dating back to 1750ish at DFS.

I have seven children for John Freer Blacklock and his wife Mary Robertson (married 15 May 1839 at Charleston), only two of whom were males: William Robertson Blacklock, b. 8 Mar 1843; d. 24 May 1844, and John Freer Blacklock, Jr., b. 22 Sep 1846; d. 30 Jun 1847.

How far back can you trace your BLACKLOCKs?

Barbara

_________________

John is my gt gt grandfather. He was born abt 1846 in Manchester. John's mother's name was Elizabeth. I don't know her maiden name but the 1851 census says she was born in Bolton Lane around 1802. John's father is not listed in the 1851 census but Elizabeth is listed as 'wife' and not widowed - so I am wondering if he worked elsewhere ... or what? The address of Elizabeth and her children was 13 Iswell Terrace, Cheetham. Elizabeth had 3 other sons, Joseph, Thomas, and William. John married Helen Ankers in 1874. Their children were Arthur(my gt grandfather who emigrated to Canada), Mary, John Hy, Herbert, Nellie, William, and Florrie. They lived in Sussex St, Salford, Lancashire from abt 1880 - 1911. Any help would be really appreciated cos I'm stuck!

Hello, Brownsugarbabe1.

My name is Debra Blacklock-Sloan, William Blacklock's oldest grandchild. I live in Houston. Back in the early 80s, Baby Sister gave me a short history of the family. Since then, I have been compiling the family history. Please hit me up on Facebook or e-mail me at debrabsloan@yahoo.com

Debra

I just recieved a picture of Myrtle not to long ago from a family member Dorothy. She emailed it to me as I have no pictures of the family pass my grandparents. It is so nice to put a picture to the name. I came across Myrtle's grave a few years back she is in the same area at the graveyard as my husbands grandmother. Do you happen to have any pictures of Myrtle and Percy and any other family members.
I'm not sure where you live but I live in Toronto Ontario.
