M.C. BLACKMAN who married Catherine ORR in Harris Co., GA Jan 22, 1855. They then moved to AL where he evidently dies. She remarries William Jackson Goddard Sept 4, 1859

Daniel Huey R. Blackmon He was Born in Harris Co. Ga. His wife Delia Ann Melissa Arthur was from Dale county. Any way I believe this school was named for that family and its decendants. This Daniel was one of 12 children the others settled in Crenshaw, Coffee and later Covington Co.

Getsey (Gatsie) in my line also. She was married to Redding (Reading) Blackmon. They came to Louisiana from Ga. and I have been unable to take it any futher. He stated in the 1860 census in Sabine Parish, La. that he was born circa. 1807 in S.C., she stated that she was born circa. 1808 in Ga. I have only one child to this union. Her name is Winnie J. m. John G. Russell.

Daniel Huey Blackmon born 1844, son of Daniel Blackmon born 1790. I understand you have all of Burrells childrens names etc. I have information that Burrell may be the brother of Daniel Blackmon born 1790.

James Jefferson Blackmon, his father was Benjamin and his father was James from Scotland.
Is this James from Scotland the one born about the 1750s who was in Lancaster Co., S.C. by the 1780s

A noted Lancaster area researcher, Viola C. Floyd left her research notes to the Lancaster County Libary. In her notes there are references to the James Blackmon and Daniel Blackmon Families (1790 Cencus.) Robert Blackmon of Six Mile S.C. translated those notes into a coherent paper for use in researching those Blackmon lines and donated the paper to the Libary, which is now in with the Floyd collection. From those papers it was suggested James Blackmon may have been a son of Bengamin Blackmon of Georgetown and Grandson of Thomas and Sarah Blackmon of Charleston immigrants from England.
so We have:
1 Thomas Blackmon Charleston S.C.
2 Bengamin Blackmon Georgetown S.C.
3 James Blackmon Lancaster S.C.
4 Benjamin Blackmon Lancaster S.C.
5 James Jefferson Blackmon (moved out of state before 1855 per the paper in the Libary)
Harold Blackmon of Union S.C. lists this same James Blackmon Lancaster S.C. as being from Scotland

of Daniel Blackmon b.1790 in Lancaster Co.,S.C, moved to Harris County Ga

Elijah and Getsy Blackman/Blackmon were in Whitaker Twp. Harris Co. GA 1850 with the following children:

James married Mary Massey, Foster married Sarah Hudspeth, Joannah married Joseph Mullins and Henry married Mary J. Hudpeth nee __? After Elijah's death Joseph Mullins and John Wesley Laney who married Lavinia (Jamesia?) were the exc. for Getsy. Also need to find older children if any. Perry Blackman/Blackmon was married to Rachel Laney 1840; dead by 1850. Need to know if he is older brother.

--------------Extract from "The Valentines" (for full piece see Verbie Juanita COLE notes)-------------
K. T. (Kimbrough Theophilus-we know why he went by K. T., don't we?) Jones, Juanita's maternal grandfather, was born December 6, 1867, in Bullock County, Alabama to Minton S. Jones. He apparently had two brothers, Minton and Francis. He moved to Ozark, Alabama in September 1888 from his home in Union Springs, Alabama. He made the trip via the Central of Georgia railroad, and upon his arrival bought out B. F. Cobb, who was operating a small market. K. T. started his butchering and family market business with a hand saw and wooden meat block. During his distinguished business career of 61 years in Ozark, he also dealt in the purchase and shipping of thousands of hogs and cattle. For many years he was the only outlet in Dale County for farmers needing to sell livestock. He was a progressive and innovative businessman. Upon his death on August 7, 1949, he left the City Market in Ozark to his heirs to operate.

K. T.'s wife, Viola Huntice Grace, was born in Dale County, Alabama. She was an only child, as her father died before she was born. She and her mother lived with her parents for some time. K. T. and Huntice had ten children - Huntice L., Minton R., J. Maxwell and J. Mackey (twins), Nettie Stell, V. Trisvan, Elsie, Ernest L., and Mary Murl. One child died shortly after birth. Viola died February 14, 1949, earlier the same year that K. T. died.

K. T. Jones Died Sunday Following A Long Illness
Mr K. T. Jones age 81, one of Ozark's most prominent citizens, died at his home Sunday morning following a long illness. Mr Jones a native of Andalusia, came to Ozark in 1888 and established the City Market, one of Ozark's oldest business firms, as well as one of the oldest in Southeast Alabama. he operated one of the largest cattle buying businesses in this section for many years, representing leading packers in the South. During his more than half a century of successful business here Mr. Jones took an active part of in the civic affairs of the community. A few years ago ill health forced his retirement from active business, but despite his retirement was in touch with affairs daily and was interested in all progressive movements in his home town and county. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Ozark Baptist Church conducted by his pastor, rev. Charles Landers. Interment was in the city cemetery with Holman Funeral Home directing. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs Ray Dillard and Mrs. V. L. Cole, both of Ozark; Mrs. P. W. Doerr, of Chicago and Mrs. J. F. Pennington of Atlanta; two sons, John henry Jones of Ozark and J. M. Jones of Birmingham; a brother M. S. (Tom) Jones of Union Springs; a sister, Mrs. E. L. Speller of Birmingham; 19 grand children and 18 great grandchildren.

-------------Newspaper article about K. T. Jones Thursday 06 October 1949 Southern Star------------------------------------------
61 Years of Continuous Service to The People of Ozark and Dale County
Furnishing fresh native and Western meats of the choicest quality to a large patronage in this territory and serving farmers of this and adjoining counties as a cattle and hog feeder and shipper for 61 years is one of the longest records of public service that can be pointed out among the business and commercial life of Ozark. This is the long record of service of Mr. K. T. Jones, who died at his home here in august 7, 1949. He was Ozark's oldest business man from the standpoint of service. To the hundreds of people who patronized his modern market daily. the early history of this popular business and its genial owner will read like fiction. Mr. Jones came to Ozark in September 1888 to establish himself in business. He came here from his home in Union Springs, over the central Georgia railroad and upon his arrival in Ozark bought out B. F. Cobb. who was operating a small market in a wooden building on the Maulding lot. Mr. Jones started his business career here with a hand saw and wooden meat block. His thorough knowledge of the business soon rewarded his efforts and when his business started growing he moved into a building owned by Uncle Billy Faust, located on the lot where the Mixon Hotel now stands. In the midst of expanding business the building and contents were destroyed by fire and Mr. Jones purchased new market equipment and established himself in a wooden building on the lot where the Standard Service station now stands. Later he moved to the rear of H. Z. Parker's store, located then where the A & P store now operates. Every move was in the interest of enlarging his business to provide satisfactory and complete service for his growing patronage. he did not remain long in the rear of H. Z. Parker's store when he purchased the lot where his present market is now located. When Mr. Jones entered the market business in Ozark in 1888 he had to slaughter his cattle, cut his meats and make delivery before day. No method of refrigeration was available at the time. As soon as ice was available at Eufala, the trading center of this territory at the time, he was the first store ice here, both for his market and for sale to the people of Ozark. he shipped ice here from Eufala several years. At his death last month his market was a model of how an up-to-date market should be equipped and operated. He had built, over the last 61 years a buisiness institution that set the pace for modern appliances and methods. Installed in the City Market is one of the finest refrigeration systems to be found in this whole country. Ample storage refrigeration, modern refrigerated show cases, all electrically operated. All market equipment in use at the City Market is new and thoroughly sanitary. Another important item Mr. Jones never overlooked in the long period of his buisenss career, was, he always carried in season, fresh oysters and fish for his patrons. Mr. Jones' business activity was not confrined to operating a modern market. He bought and shipped during his 31 years in buiseness many thousands of hogs and cattle. The largest single shipment he ever handled was 18 solid box car loads. For years he was the only cattle and hog buyer here and paid top market prices to the farmers of this territory. During his 61 years in business Mr. Jones built a business his heirs are proud to continue. This long and useful record should not be broken.

Death Notice
Menton (sic) R. Jones
Dies in Montgomery; Burial here Friday
News of the death of Menton R. Jones first son of Mr. and Mrs. K. T. Jones, reached Ozark fast Thursday night and deepened the gloom that was over our city. Menton together with his family resided in Montogomery where he was prospering. he had been a resident of Montgomery for several years and was held in high esteem by the people of that city. On last Thursday he was stricken and rushed to a hospital. he lived only a short time after reaching the hospital. His body was prepared for burial and shipped to Ozark. Menton had many friends in Ozark friends since boyhood or those he aquired through his good natured, jolly disposition. He was succesful plumber here and when he moved to Montgomery he continued his business there. He always enjoyed the reputation of dealing fair with his fellow man. We feel like we have lost a citizen of Ozark for we have had hopes that Menton would sometimes move back to Ozark to make his home. He was 33 years of age, and is survived by his wife and two daughters, Kathryn and Grace, his parenta Mr. Mrs. K. T. Jones, two brothers and five sisters.

In Memory of Minton R. Jones
On June 18th, 1925 just as the sun was going down, the sweet spirit of Minton Jones took its flight to a home beyond. Although my heart bleeds from the wound inflicted, I bow in humble submission to God's will. His ways are a mystery, and in our grief we cannot see why, but some time we will understnad. we know he makes no mistakes, and he has promised to sustain us. As an infant, Minton always was smiling, as a boy, he was jolly and full of fun, as a man he never passed by a call for help without a word of cheer and a helping hand. He made the world brighter everywhere he went. Sickness and sorrow in others he felt keenly, although when sick or in trouble himself he neve complained, even in his last illness, he never once complained, but said he felt alright. Never in his life did he speak one unkind word to mamma always obedient to my every wish a loving husband, a devoted father, a good citizen, a member of the Baptist Church since 14 years of age.

A precious one from us has gone,
a voice we loved is still
A place is vacnt in our home
Which never can be filled
Momma.

------------------Extract from "The Valentines" (Full copy located in Verbie Juanita COLE notes)-----------------------------
Nettie Estelle (or Stell) Jones was born November 16, 1898, in Ozark (Dale County), Alabama. The spelling of the middle name is shown differently on various official documents, thus the uncertainty. She was the fifth of ten children born to K. T. and Huntice. The family lived at 308 Jones Street in Ozark.

Juanita's father, Vernie Lester Cole was born July 6, 1893, in Tennessee, to Robert C. Cole and his wife, Josephine (Josie). Lester served in Company L of the 15th Infantry during American campaigns near Tientsin, China. During this time as a Private in the Calvary, he was thrown from a horse and severely injured a leg. Lester and Nettie were married August 18, 1918.

Notes for Willie Ray DILLARD:
The Dillard name originates from France and can be traced back to the 16th century. The first spelling was Illard and then d'Illard, with the "d" meaning "family of" Illard. John Carbonne d'Illard emigrated to England around 1620 or 1630 and it was one of his children who changed the spelling to Dillard in order to anglocize the name. In 1650 one of their descendants, George, came to Virginia. Because the manifest records are well documented showing George and other family members subsequent arrivals it is often thought (mistakenly so) that Dillard is an English name. Howeve, today there are only 12 Dillard families in the entire United Kingdom. France, on the other hand, is second only to the U.S. in the number of Dillard households. Today in France the name is spelled as Dillard.

Some scholars have written that the name is English and derived from Dill or German and came from Diller. However, there is no proof to support that or how the name came to be changed to Dillard. In France, there is ample recorded evidence of the existence of the name d'Illard and there is plenty of supporting records in Wiltshire, England which shows the change of the family name in the mid 1600's.

Lawrence: It was with a note of sadness that I read your post regarding
your Mr. Jones and your grandfather, Ray Dillard. I was not aware The
City Market has closed and that brought a note of sadness. You are
right; a part of history went with that market. I grew up in Ozark and
went with my dad to the market many, many times. In fact, I suppose that
is the only place we ever bought meats. He and Mr. Dillard were good
friends. Up until my dad's death in 1974 we always bought our Christmas
ham at The City Market. Mr. Dillard knew exactly what my dad wanted. I
was not aware of the history behind the market and it was interesting to
read. Thanks for the info.

City Market Closing
One of Ozark's oldest business has closed their doors after more than 110 years of operation. The City Market in downtown Ozark, has been in the same location since 1890 and the current owner, Billy Ray Dillard, is retiring at the age of 89. Billy Ray's father in law, K.T. Jones was the original owner of the market, which opened in 1888.

HISTORY

The following is a record of the available information concerning the ancestry of Maurice Eldon Valentine and Verbie Juanita Cole. Some of the details of their life together are included as well:

The last name of Juanita's maternal grandmother's grandmother was Blackman. Juanita's Grandma Jones called her Grandma Garner (Cousin Callie). Nathaniel Green is reputed to be an ancestor on the Jones side of the family tree.

T. died.

Juanita was born at noon on July 20, 1919 in Calera (Shelby County), Alabama to Lester (who was 26) and Nettie (who was 20). Juanita's parents lived in Calera where her father was an auto mechanic. She lived in Dale County, Alabama most of her life, though the date of her move to Ozark is not known. When she was in Fourth or Fifth grade, the family moved to Tiptonville, Tennessee where her dad worked as a mechanic.

They moved back to Ozark sometime after that, possibly due to trouble Lester experienced with his injured leg. Dr. Grace performed surgery on the leg in the big house on Broad Street that was used as a hospital at the time. This was a huge two-story building with white columns that was admired by all of Ozark. One part of the admiration was wondering how the house could continue to stand with such huge bee hives being built on the pillars. Congressman Henry B. Steagall, Juanita's future employer, bought it for his daugher, Myra Law.

Juanita graduated from high school as valedictorian of her class. She started work with the Public Works Administration in Auburn on April 3, 1939. During the period around 1940-41 Juanita worked for Congressman Steagall in Washington. D. C. He was Chairman of the House Banking and Currency Committee. He had dated Grandma Jones prior to both of them finding their future spouses. Juanita did not like living in D. C.

After this she got a Civil Service job at Napier Field in Dothan, Alabama. Dothan was about 22 miles from Ozark and she drove that distance each day in a 1941 Chevy for which she paid less than $1000. She used to visit with Tommie Speigner (Mrs. Ealon) who lived in Enterprise and worked at Napier Field.

Juanita met her future husband at Fort Rucker, Alabama at a USO dance that her mother and one of her friends, Betty Sorrell, sponsored at the base.

Nettie Cole died March 16, 1959, at the age of 60, after having had the privilege of being sprayed with a water hose by her oldest grandson, of seeing her youngest grandson born, and of having a positive influence on all of her six grandchildren. Lester died February 23, 1973, in Ozark at the age of 79.

Maurice's maternal grandfather, Carl Kofoid, was born October 22, 1852, in Copenhagen, Denmark. He came to America at the age of seventeen, and lived in Illinois. While still a young man he moved to Kansas and settled on a farm in 1873 in Greenwood County.

Maurice's maternal grandmother, Ernestine Wickworth, was born June 5, 1856. Carl and Ernestine were married March 16, 1878. They had nine children - Mabel, Harvey, Walter, Alfretta, Dorothy, Gertrude, Edna, and Ida. One child died as an infant. Carl retired in 1909 and died April 21, 1931 in Eureka from an attack of apoplexy. Ernestine died August 12, 1947, and was buried two days later in Greenwood Cemetery in Eureka.

Maurice's mother, Gertrude Helen Kofoid was born on June 29, 1893 in Beaumont, Kansas. His father, Harry Edward Valentine, was born in Oklahoma, and was 26 when Maurice was born. He worked as a carpenter, and he and Gertrude lived in Kansas City, Missouri for a time. They were visiting Gertrude's family in Eureka when their second child arrived.

Maurice was born at 8:15 A.M., June 29, 1921, in Eureka, Kansas to Harry and Gertrude. He went through all of his school years at Midian, Kansas. He graduated from Midian High School in 1940, after surviving several tough years in elementary school. The high school period must have been tough as well because his was the last class that graduated from Midian High. After graduation he went to Wichita and got a job pumping gas. He worked there for about six months, then went to St. John, Kansas where his parents had moved, for a visit of a couple weeks.

His step-dad, Porter Leroy Sanford, and mother had left Midian and moved to Lyons, Kansas for three to four months, then on to St. John to work for Cities Service. Some time later, Leroy quit Cities Service and they moved to Lorraine, Kansas where he worked as a contract pumper. He was buried November 11, 1947, in Lorraine. Gertrude lived there for a while then went to Colorado for a visit. She worked at Seagulls in Arvada, Colorado as a housekeeper. It was while there she met Joseph Edlund, who she later married. She died March 22, 1975.

Maurice was in a theatre in December 1941 when he heard that Japan had bombed Pearl Harbor. He enlisted at Lyons, Kansas and was shipped to Camp Robinson, near Little Rock, Arkansas for a year. He then went to a base near Monterrey, California; then on to San Luis Obispo, then El Cajon (by San Diego), before finally reaching Fort Rucker, Alabama.

It was while stationed in Alabama that he met his future wife at the now famous Fort Rucker USO dance. After his stint in Alabama, he went on to Durham, North Carolina. Maurice and Juanita married May 2, 1944 in Durham, just two days prior to Maurice being shipped overseas with the 35th Infantry Division. He went to LaHavre, England for additional training. On July 6 of that year he landed at Cherober, France then moved on to St. Lo. He was in the company of a number of very green soldiers, who were surrounded by the fire of ack-ack guns and the roar of planes. He was in Europe from May 1944 until September 1945.

On October 2, 1945, Maurice was discharged from the service at Fort McPherson, a base near Atlanta. Juanita quit her civil service job around that time and they went to Lorraine, Kansas to visit his parents. He got hired by Cities Service Oil Company. Chet Walters, Ray and Bob Walter's dad, did the hiring.

Maurice and Juanita were living in Lorraine when their first son, Charles Eugene, was born in Lyons, Kansas on June 30, 1946. They were also living there when their second son, Kenneth Eldon was born June 25, 1948. Ken was born in Ellsworth, one of the first children delivered at the new hospital there. Sometime after the second arrival, the family moved to the Russell, Kansas area. They took up residence in a farm house south of town. They finally got things right when they had their third and last child, Lee, who was delivered at the Russell County hospital July 11, 1952. (Anyone want to guess who is writing this?) They moved into Russell from the country around 1956.

While in Russell, Juanita worked for the Soil Conservation Service and the Corp of Engineers. She was involved in the construction of Wilson Dam, that was built east of Russell. She started work for Sohio after the dam work was done, and retired from Sohio in 1979, at the age of 60. She was involved in the First Baptist Church choir for a long time, but spent a great deal of time trying to keep her boys straight.

Maurice worked for Cities Service, primarily in the Russell area. His efforts as pumper, roustabout, and gang pusher resulted in his promotion to Assistant Production Foreman, working out of Russell and then Chase. He retired from Citgo in 1981 at age 60. He played on several fast-pitch softball teams, fished (primarily with trotlines in a local river), and hunted for pheasants, squirrel, and quail (primarily with his youngest son).

Shortly after Maurice's retirement, the two of them moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas, where they have lived ever since July 1981.

Death Notice in Southern Star Thursday, 23 February 1967
Paul Dillard
Funeral services for Sidney Paul Dillard, 30, of Eau Gallie, Fla., and formerly of Ozark will be held at the Ozark Baptist Church at 3 O'clock p.m. Saturday, February 25th. Burial will be held in the Ozark City Cemetery. Mr. Dillard passed away suddenly at his home in Eau Gallie Wednesday morning. He was a former piolit in Naval Aviation and was employed at Cape Kennedy. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Betty Dillard; three sons Teddy, Bobby and Larry of Eau Gallie; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W Ray Dillard; a sister, Mrs. Sandra Young: a brother, Billy Dillard and his grandmother, Mrs. O. D. Dillard all of Ozark.

Lawrence,

I am making the assumption that you are Pauls son. He was my favorite
cousin, God was he full of life and so very
much fun. Always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye that
spelled "MISCHIEF" My sister and I spent
many summers next door to your Dads home, at Lester and Nettie's. My dad
was Sambo or Robert KT Cole Sr. He was named for Robert Clark and KT Jones.
I remember the tales of eating Steak at KT's house for breakfast when
Dad was a little boy. I believe that his grandparents spoiled him.

Sandy was the most beautiful girl in the world and Uncle Bill was always so
generous and fun loving to us kids. We always played at Aunt Mary's when we
were down in Ozark. I remember the pool in the back yard. It seems so
small now yet back then it was mighty big.

Your dad gave me a white navy cap years ago, he would have had a fit had he
known that I was destined to join the
Marines, I sure loved Paul, he was so very special to me.

God Bless

Robert KT Cole JR. (Bubber}
