Taken from the "Strong family p.1380" ( ? book title ) found in Blackney file at the Connecticut Historical society Hartford,Ct.

Betsey Blackney married Luman Preston of Plymouth,Ct. on Dec.25 1800. She died April 4 1865 aged 88 years and 6 months, consequently was born about the first part of October 1776. She had 3 sisters : Lucy Blackney, Phebe Blackney, Jershula Blackney.

Tradition says that the family had French blood and lived near the Hudson river in New York state.

Betsey Blackney before marriage lived with the family of a Deacon Bacon of Woodbury,Ct. and also for a time with her mother on Chippins hill in Bristol,Ct. but no record of her mother was found, it is thought that she might of married a second time and consequently was known by another name.

Betsey's sister Phebe is said to have married a Mr. Hine of New Haven,Ct.

Lucy married Thural (perhaps a contraction of Ithural Tompkins or Thompson and also lived in New Haven and in Kent, Ct. around 1850.

Jershula married Abel Tompkins, she joined the congregational church in Southington,Ct. Aug.5 1821 and had 4 childern Maria, Harriet, Daniel D. and Ira. All were babtized there Nov. 21 1821. She is marked on church cataloge as having died in 1844.

I have been researching the Blackney family for sometime. All of my research indictes the following:

William Blackney & Esther Spencer had the following children but I do Not know where Ester & William married or when.
Clark, Sarah (who is buried with her mother in N.Y.), Eldad & Truman.

Also a revolutionary war soldier named David Blackney / Blacknee is believed to be some how related to them as Clark Blackney "was in charge of his will". David died in the war - I believe He was from New Milford,Ct. perhaps he was an uncle or cousin to them.

Also the 4 Blackney sisters that I am rearching maybe a relation to them but NOT children of William Blackney & Esther Spencer.Perhaps a cousin to them.

1)Phoebe (Blackney) Hine - died in New Haven,Ct
2)Jerusha (Blackney) Tompkins - died in Middletown,Ct
3)Betsey (Blackney) Preston - died in Pymouth,Ct
4)Lucy (Blackney) Tompkins or Thompson - resided in New Haven,Ct and also lived in Kent,Ct. in 1850.

If you come across any information on these 4 Blackney sisters please post.

Good Luck.

I have an Eldad Blackney b1722, married 1. Clara Palmer, and 2. Sally Cross. The Cross lineage is my family. I was told Eldad could be the brother of Clark and Truman Blackney, the two aforementioned being sons of William Blackney and Esther Spencer. Can you shed any light on Eldad as a possible sibling?

thanks
Ron
Canada
