I am McCall Blackshear Calhoun,
as a child on my bedroom wall hung my coat of arms.
My father David Michael Calhoun told me,"This is our family coat of arms. This is yours, I have a book about our family history called the Blacksheariana which I will pass on to you when I die."
Regretfully my coat of arms was lost in a house-fire when I was still just a boy.
any information on how i may find a copy of it would be most appreciated.
I will gladly respond to anyone about the Blackshear family.

You will find many books and trees stating that Benjamin Fordham married Mary Blackshear. Proceed with caution. I have not found one single piece of evidence that a Mary Blackshear existed (she supposedly being the daughter of Alexander Blackshear and Agnes Stout), nor that Benjamin Fordham married a Blackshear woman. Good luck.

A new Blackshear web site on MyFamily.com is now available. Its name is "The Blackshear Home". It contains the results of twenty five years of Blackshear research, over twenty five lengthy files, including the original Blacksheariana with all text and pictures plus our new master file named "Blackshear Family History". As with other MyFamily sites, it is by invitation only. This is easily granted by a request to access the site by e-mail to ARK_TRAV1@YAHOO.COM. Hopefully you can also give a short explanation as to your connection to Blackshears. Also, on my computer I have a total of over 1000 photo's. We are more than willing to help anyone in research that we can. There is no cost to downloading the files or their access. This work has been only to assist others in their research.

Greetings Robert,

Better late than not at all. I would like information on Moses Francis Blackshear. In particular whether he had slaves in Washington and/or Jefferson counties. I am researching African American Blackshears in this area. I'm hoping you know whether or not there are family papers which exist that might reflect the answer and if so whether and where I might be able to review them.

I hope this brings a response that lets us share information.

Greetings,

I am hoping to find information and share information on this African American family and all responses are welcome.

I am continuing research on the Berry and Linnie Blackshear family of Davisboro, Wadley and Bartow, in Washington and Jefferson Counties, Georgia; circa (1870-1930). The children of this couple were Joseph, Lemuel aka Lim, Nemesis, Augustus my great grandfather, Edward aka Ned, Mary, Tabitha, William a Methodist Minister in Bibb County, GA, Betsy (Jackson), Jane (Reese), Tom, Sherrod, Lula, Daisy (Wadley), Walter, Cornelius aka Neal and Ellis. The names in parentheses are married names. I have located many of these family members though some appear to have been lost.

Through the years some of this family expanded to surrounding counties while others remained in Washington and Jefferson counties. I have traced many of Berry and Linnie's grand children's families.

If you are searching for these Blackshears, respond; I would like to share information with you.

Don't know if you are still interested, but I am descended from Lovice Blackshear and Henry Dominy who were married on April 1, 1821 in Laurens County, Georgia. Before very long, they moved to Henry County, Alabama where they raised their ten children. In the late 1850s, three of their sons Alexander Blackshear, Frederick and Seaborn moved to Texas along with Lovice's two brothers Alexander and William Royal Blackshear. Two sons back in Alabama died in the 1860s. In 1870, another son Daniel Jasper went to Texas and in 1875, the last son Benjamin followed. Lovice moved with Benjamin. In subsequent years, most of the other descendents of Lovice and Henry relocated to Texas. All of them were in adjoining counties of Tyler, Trinity, Houston and Cherokee. Many are buried in the Pennington Cemetery in Trinity County, Texas including Lovice Blackshear Dominy. I have a file on the descendents of Henry and Lovice that I would be happy to send anyone.

Evidence that Benjamin Fordham (1743-c1810) did NOT marry Mary Blackshear

It seems to be a well-established "fact" that Benjamin Fordham (1743-c1810) married Mary Blackshear, daughter of Alexander Blackshear and Agnes Stout. There are also a few who think Benjamin Fordham married the granddaughter of Alexander and Agnes Blackshear. Both assertions seem to be based on a bequest made in Alexander Blackshear's will to his granddaughter, Susanna Fordham.

I have been researching this for quite some time and can find no evidence to support either claim. In fact, all evidence suggests something quite different.

Everthing hinges on identifying the Susanna Fordham mentioned in the Blackshear wills. After making several bequests to his sons, Alex: Blackshear (in 1785) leaves the remainder of his household and kitchen furniture, as well as his stock (horses, cattle, etc) to be divided among his two daughters (Eleanor Bailey and Sarah Clifton) and his granddau Susanna Fordham (to whom he also gave a slave). This was not an insignificant gift, and the fact that it was equally divided elevates this Susanna Fordham to the level of Alex:'s daughters. When Agnes Blackshear wrote her will (in 1793), she made a few specific bequests, but she primarily left everything to be divided among her two daughters (Elender Baley and Sarah Clifton) and her granddaughter Susana McKinsey "according to my husband Alexander Blackshear Will." The wording tells us that Susanna Fordham and Susanna McKinsey are one and the same.

That leads to the next key issue: determining the age of this Susanna. We know from Bible records that Benjamin Fordham was born in 1743. And, if the Bible records are to be believed, his first 6 children were born between 1767 and 1776. The Benjamin Fordham Bible record is available through the NC State Archives, but their copy does not include the names and dates for the rest of the children, including daughter Susanna. I have reviewed the document in person and it appears that the bottom portion of the page is missing. There are some books and online "trees" which give the names and birth dates for these children. Susanna Fordham, dau of Benjamin was supposedly born 31 March 1779. If we accept that Benjamin's daughter was born in March 1779, then she was just age 14 when Agnes wrote her will in July 1793, calling her Susanna McKinsey.

Based on the evidence, I have to conclude that Susanna Fordham, granddaughter of Alexander and Agnes Blackshear, is NOT the daughter of Benjamin Fordham. I must also must conclude that Benjamin Fordham did NOT marry the granddaughter of Alexander Blackshear. As proved above, his granddaughter married someone named McKinsey (McKenzie) between 1785 and 1793. We are unfortunately left with Benjamin Fordham marrying a completely unknown woman named Mary. We are also left with an unidenfied and unlinked Susanna Fordham.

Fortunately we find another clue to Susanna's identity in the will of Benjamin Fordham's father (Benjamin Sr. for purposes of this discussion). Benjamin Fordham Sr. wrote his will in September 1777, leaving significant property (a lot in the town of New Bern) to HIS granddaughter, Susanna Fordham. This Susanna Fordham was obviously born well before the daughter of Benjamin Jr. The gift Benjamin Sr. left to granddaughter Susanna was more generous than the small gifts he left his two grandsons.

I believe the evidence suggests (but does not prove) that Benjamin Fordham Sr. had a unidentified son who married the unidentified daughter of Alexander and Agnes Blackshear. This couple, both of whom were deceased by July 1777, had just one child, Susanna. Both of Susanna's grandfathers made sure that she was taken care of.

I welcome any additional evidence, ideas, or comments.

I am in England, My family is the last of the Blackshears here and unfortunately the name dies out over here as only girls are left! Brehme is my married name. I am interested in a copy of Blacksheariana as the originator came to England to look up the UK side of the family, I believe back in the late 50's early 60's. Unfortunately, the only Blackshear he could find in the London directory was a particularly bad tempered great uncle who, according to family history, told him to get lost. so sorry!I am interested in contacting other Blackshears, although I thought our origins were Chester and the first Blackshear who went to the US was in the 1600's. Can anyone enlighten me?

Hello all! My mother’s father died when she was young and a lot of her family’s history went with him. I am in the process of researching my mother’s family for her so that she will have some pictures to go along with the research. She is ecstatic with the research so far! As a gift to her I am going to try to put together a sort of scrapbook for her. If anyone has ANY pictures that they can send me through email I would greatly appreciate it. If not can anyone tell me where photos of "Blackshears" are located? Also, I have heard of the “Blacksheariana”. Does anyone know if this book contains photos?

My mother is related to the Blackshears through her great grandmother Elizabeth Margret Blackshear (Countryman). Some of the other Blackshears that she is related to are: James Addison, Enoch, Jacob, Elisha Stout, Alexander and so forth.
Thanks
Travis A Bishop
