Hi Chris, sorry to be a nuisance but can you tell me what I should do next. I have found my great, great grandfathers name who was john blacktin born 1788 who married hannah ockes or oakes. Which would be the best search engines to use to find out more information. Its getting very confusing.

I think it's one of those names that you have to be quite flexible regarding the spelling. I suspect that Blacktens, tins etc may often overlap and know that in the USA some Blacktens also overlap with Blackstone. Some of whom have taken part in the DNA study.

All the best with your hunting. If I can help a all feel free to ask,
Chris

re. your family tree. do you have any record of a herbert blacktin born sheffield 1881. i can only find one mention of him in the 1881 census when he was 3mths old. he eventually settled in newcastle around 1910. i believe his father was william henry blacktin also a brother of the same name.

Some years ago I went through the Index to wills for Blackstones etc at what was the old Somerset House. I've just gone through my scrappy notes and note 1944 Herbert Blacktin leaving a widow Ellen. Blacktin's weren't my main source of interest so I didn't record anymore details but hope this helps. Note Blacktins, tons & tens can be found principally around Belper, Sheffield, Nottingham and Derby.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/christopher.atkinson700/docs/

Cheers,
Chris

Dear Patricia,

I haven't studied the Blackton's in any depth but what I have seen seems to show a concentration of the name in Derby, Eccleshall Bierwell & Belper. They sometimes interchange with Blackten & Blacktin. My suspicions are they probably stem from a branch of the Blackstone family but I have yet to prove that. My website may interest you:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/christopher.atkinson700/docs/

Cheers,
Chris

BLACKTON Surname

I am researching the BLACKTON family surname in the hope of adding to my family history. My earliest Blackton ancestor is Thomas BLACKTON, born circa 1775, in Derbyshire, England. He is my 3x great grandfather. His son Robert Blackton, born abt. 1806, married Elizabeth Rhodes in 1841, and they in turn had a son Robert born in Shirland, Chesterfield, Derbyshire in 1852. This Robert Blackton married Louisa Skinner in 1878, and shortly thereafter the couple moved to the Windsor, Ontario, Canada - Detroit Michigan, USA area. Robert and Louisa had a son John Robert Blackton, born in Sandwich - Windsor Ontario, Canada in 1909. He was my grandfather.

I am looking for additional information on any of the above couples including brothers, sisters, dates, locations, events, etc., as well as information re: the wife and parents of Thomas Blackton, circa 1775. Thank you.

Patrica Treverton (nee BLACKTON)
