My great great grandfather, James Blackwell immigrated to Canada in 1840 and settled in Douro Township, Peterborough County,Ontario. I have found his father was William Blackwell an excise officer, born 1795 in Leicester, England. Three of William's brothers, John, Thomas and Jesse were also excise officers.
Their father, William Blackwell, was a builder and cabinet maker in Leicester. He was born about 1773, but I don't know where he was born. He appears on the 1841 Census in Leicester with his wife, Mary. According to the census, William was born outside the county of Leicestershire, while Mary was born in the county. I'd like to find a marriage or some other info which would help me to research this line further back.

I am interested in Jane Blackwell who married William Waite in,most likely,Cirencester where they lived about 1855.
Family stories say that she was from a much higher social class than her husband who was a skilled craftsman in a family business. They had 2 sons John and William Thomas. John is my husband's grandfather who immigrated to BC, Canada. Jane is said to have died when her sons were young sometime after 1863.
I have got as far back at John Blackwell m. Hannah Cook. John was born Glou. 1775 I am anxious to find his ancestors.
I have confirmed one of his children as George Blackwell b. 1801 Clou. M. Mary Barradell
His first born son is also called John. That seemes to be the way it follows as well. See www.blackwellgenealogy.com
Children are Elizabeth, Sophia, John, George Jr. Henry, and James (adopted)
Originally from Gloucester, (Cowley and Cheltenham) Looking for any help in getting my ancestors prior to 1775. I suspect that Thomas was connected. No proof at this point.
Thanks
Ron Blackwell
webmaster@blackwellgenealogy.com

Hi Carol

Apologies, missed your message in July 09 - haven't looked at the board for a while as no response since original message all those years back - believe someone from the Blackwell family (USA) visited the cottages about 4-5 years ago - the cottages still exist albeit they have been knocked into one and it is now called Constable Cottage.
One of William's sons died in the 1st World War and his name is on the memorial at Knockholt Church.
I was at Knockholt on thursday taking some flowers to my mother and father's grave and I chatted with some of the women arranging a Flower Festival at the Church and they were particularly interested in local history there (they asked me if I would do a write up for them!) In my papers somewhere I have the 1891 and 1901 census where William and family are mentioned - information on his son is available on the Commonwealth Graves website. Feel free to contact me on my e-mail prj.assoc@virgin.net

Peter

My grandmother was Jessie Elizabeth Blackwell and was one of his two daughters, I believe the other's name was Stella. She had brothers, these are the ones I remember: Clay, Clell, Cole, Forest, and a younger one whose name escapes me right now.
