About me and my
BLACKWOOD connection: My last
BLACKWOOD was my great-grandmother, Marion Damaris
BLACKWOOD, daughter of William
Jackson BLACKWOOD and Maria Louisa Dorothy
CATLETT. She was born on 12 Jan 1867 in
Berkeley Springs, Morgan Co.,
West Virginia and died 27 Jul 1931 in
Wayne Co.,
New York. Her great-grandfather was John
BLACKWOOD (ca. 1760-1813), son of William
BLACKWOOD, whose names first appear in
Shenandoah Co., Virginia records in 1788.
My genealogical studies began officially in late January 1976 and a great deal of time since then has been spent researching this branch of BLACKWOODs using the court records of Shenandoah and Warren Cos., Virginia and further research has taken me to places as far away as Milton, Tennessee; Newburg-Austen, Milton, and Nitro, West Virginia; and Bellefontaine,
Ohio. William is my “brickwall”
BLACKWOOD.
Having a “brickwall” ancestor of that time period (post-Revolutionary War) led me to further my field of view by starting a “shotgun” approach to my research. I gained familiarity with the
BLACKWOOD family in
Augusta Co., Virginia, the branch(es) in the Carolinas and their offshoots through out the southeastern United States, the branch in
Bedford Co., Pennsylvania, and the family in
BLACKWOOD,
New Jersey.
This “shotgun” approach eventually led me to Selena (Mrs. George)
BLACKWOOD of
Fort Worth,
Texas, who had gathered correspondence from BLACKWOODs far and wide throughout the the southern states and she encouraged me to publish a
BLACKWOOD family newsletter. I eventually published five issues (titled "
BLACKWOOD Family
Courier") and in the process helped her nail down her husbandÂ’s elusive Blackwodd ancestor, William Nathan "Richard"
BLACKWOOD, who descends from John and Anne
BLACKWOOD of
Greene Co., Tennessee (late 1700s).
I hope to share my
BLACKWOOD research using both GenConnect and my own Web site -
