Well, I don't think we are connected unless it goes way back through Canada to Scotland and Hormidas is a cousin or somehow part of the same Blair family. I got back to 1828 and found, (through research and finding lost cousins) that their are three Willis J. Blairs in the family. All with the middle name Jackson and there was a Mary Blair who died in infancy. You may want to check to see if there are some old upstate (Albany) newspapers to find clues. I found an obscure newspaper that had tons of tidbits about my family tree including court apparances, horse thievery, drunk and disorderly charges, an appendectomy on the dining room table, etc., and I stumbled on it by accident. Good luck. Donna
Thanks for the quick reply. Wilfred is fully sources though I don't know his middle name. The family is French Canadian based on the names, the census records etc. I don't know where they entered the US from Canada however.

Hormidas Blair (or Blais) arrived in 1880 according to a census but there's no further documentation.

His wife is also in question. My family's records showed his wife's name to be Azilia La March but all I can find is Mary Blair (who presumably entered from Canada in 1890).

Hope you can help. Hormidas and his wife have always been considered the end of my family's geneology research but I'm trying to go further.

Thanks.

My Blairs were mostly from the Adams Center, NY area. We are pretty sure we are of Scottish descent and I am looking for the parents of Willis J. Blair born abt. 1828. We do not know if he had any brothers or sisters or where they (or he) came from. We suspect they came from somewhere in Canada but are also stuck. What does the "J" stand for in Wilfred? Ours is Jackson to the best of our knowledge. Cohoes, NY is approx. 138 miles from Adams Center, NY.

I have been researching the Blair side of my family and have gotten stuck. Perhaps you can help.

I am researching the parents of Wilfred J Blair. The father has multiple name spellings:

First name: Hormidas, Hormisdas, Moise, Moses
Last name: Blair or Blais

Is anyone else researching the Blairs of Cohoes, NY and running into the same problem? I know Hormisdas was born in Canada (Fr) but can't find anything but his census records.

Your help is much appreciated; my 100% sources, fully up to date family tree is available publicly.

I guess I worded my query poorly. What I need confirmation of is not their marriage which I mentioned...but whether that George Blair is the same person as the George Blair that was a son of John Blair and Maude Lee. There were two different George Blairs and I am not sure whether the George Blair that married Grace Sellers is the son of John Blair and Maude Lee. The George Blair I am trying to find went to Knoxville and was deceased before his twin brother, Sam Blair, who died in 1981. Thanks so much for checking.

Looking at Tennessee Marriage Records 1780-2002 on Ancestry, it has the marriage record of George C. Blair to Grace Sellers in Grainger County, TN on January 11, 1930. I have attached a copy of the page (it also has other marriage records on the page).

George Blair, born 9 Nov 1905, was the son of John and Maude (Lee) Blair who married 3 Dec 1900. His twin, Samuel Blair, went to OH, but George went to Knoxville, after being raised by Sam and Gertie Hopson after his mother remarried. There were two George Blairs--one married Johnnie Massey in Knoxville and the other married Grace Sellers in Grainger Co. I believe that the Grainger Co. Twin George Blair married Grace Sellers, but I need confirmation of that, and would like to make contact with descendants and find out where he is buried. What happened to his father, did he die or leave the family
The first info I have of Christine is a notice in a Lancaster County newspaper of her marriage to a John Blair on May 16, 1875. After 1880 her husband is in Ohio but Christine isn't listed.

\Blairs/McCarty in GA 1700-1850

am a direct descendant of Ann Blair, daughter of Hugh Blair Jr. and Mary (Polly) Lee aand granddaughter of Hugh Blair Sr and Jemimah McCarty.

Jemimah was the daughter of Daniel McCarty of Lincoln County (formally Tryon) and Granville Counties, NC. He had a brother Cornelius who owned land near Daniel in NC, SC. Daniel married Agness (???). Among their children was my 5th great grandmother Jemimah. Their family owned property in Granville County and Lincoln County(formerly Tryon) In NC. Land was sold between Daniel and a Johnston whose son Samuel eventually married Daniel’s daughter Olley (Olive)

Evidently Daniel’s brother Cornelius left for South Carolina before Daniel did because he transferred some land to Daniel and Hugh Blair. Blair married Daniel’s daughter Jemimah and moved to SC and eventually GA with Daniel . His sons Daniel Jr. John & Jacob moved also as did most of his daughters.

There was a Cornelius recorded in Lincoln County NC as head of a household of 3 males of 16 years or older, 1 male under 16 and 3 females. Since we know Daniel and his older brother Cornelius was in SC or GA by that time. I wonder if this might be the father of the two brothers. I do not know anything about his wife and children. I believe the Cornelius from Mecklenburg (formerly Tryon) County NC who married Jemima Bell and move eventually to KY and Ohio are members of the McCarthy family from Stafford County VA. I do not believe that he was because his marriage date was in the 1820’s. and he went west while my McCarty’s migrated southwards.
I believe Cornelius, the eldest son of Daniel who was the heir in law of Cornelius’ of SC estate and married in GA. I still haven’t worked that out yet.

One fact I have discovered is that there were two families (one was named Goforth)involved with the McCarty’s in Tryon and/or Granville County who can be connected in Bucks County PA with a Cornelius McCarty. I’m not sure about this but perhaps it is worth investigating.

I am hopeful that someone may have some data that might open a few doors to my McCarty Family.

Thanks.

Phil Strause
Donna: We became acquainted in 2003 when you made your 1st post. we exchanged information then and sad to say I have not done much research since then. There is so much information on the internet now that I need to start looking things again. The Guernsey County Gen. Assoc did advise they had no record of Blairs in that county nor in the cemeterys they had record of. However, I have proof that James Blair in my line died there (I'm sure they didn't carry his body around until they went to another county to bury him. So there must be a private cemetry around there somewhere.)

Look up Robert Blair B.1683 D.1774 he is from Antrim Ireland and he lived in Mass. His wife name was Isabella Rankin. I found more under her name. Matther Blair was involved with the Church.
Robert's dad was James Blair 1640-1732 mother Rachel Boyd
1644-1700
Good luck!

Hi, There is a cemetery in Ohio but I can't remember the name right now. I was there 2 or 3 years ago and have pictures of it. I will be happy to try to find them and email them to you. Send me your email address. It may be a week or so before I find them. Iam in the middle of house improvements and my rooms are a little mixed up. I understand that some of the Blairs are stones only the bodies are in Iowa. I haven't done any research in the past few years either. Donna (I remember you)

missing John T Blair

My gggrandmother, Lucy Wimberly Yarbrough married a John T blair in 1881 in Tyler, Smith Co TX. They had a daughter Willie Park in 1885 and sometime between then and 1893 he abandoned them because Lucy filed for divorce in 1894. Both his daughter and granddaughter died of cerebral hemhorages so he may have had some weird genes going on! We dont know where he was from, when he was born or anything about him. I do have a journal of his and he apparently kept boarders and also ran some sort of mercantile business called Anderson and Blair. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

We have a Hugh Blair born 1729 in Ayrshire, Scotland. His nephew, another Hugh Blair, was born 1769, probably in Dalry, Ayrshire. We don't have much other information on either and we are trying to find connections. We were hoping there might be a link with your Hugh Blair line.

On another branch of the tree there is a James Blair, born 1732 in Lancaster County, PA. His father was Andrew Blair, born 1689 but we don't have any further information on him either.
