Someone named Gene Weatherly posted his family tree on Ancestry.com, and he has Ruby B. Blake of Greene County, Arkansas listed as born Aug. 12, 1915. She married Lowell Newberry in Greene County, Arkansas in 1936. She died Apr. 29, 2000 Bradley, TN. She had no children on his tree.
Unless she divorced Lowell before 1940, she is probably not the right Ruby Blake. However, don't dismiss her out of hand.
You could look on a map of TN and find the county seat of the county Bradley is in. Google the county seat and look for the newspaper there. Since you have her death date, you can request a copy of her obituary. The obituary should give her next of kin and where they lived at the time of her death.
Good luck!
the death of Mr Fred K Blake, of Broadfield Lodge, near Crawley, who died on 6th May

THE TUAM HERALD, TUAM, CO GALWAY
SATURDAY, AUGUST 14, 1909

ANOTHER BLAKE "WINDFALL"

According to the "London Star" a very curious story attaches to the announcement that another Blake fortune has fallen to the Treasury by the death of Mr Fred K Blake, of Broadfield Lodge, near Crawley, who died on 6th May, intestate, and a bachelor without known relative. Although this estate is not so large as the more famous Blake millions which have interested so many, it reaches the respectable total of £43,000. It is certainly curious that this intestate should be related to the famous Mrs Helen Blake, whose fortune also went to the Crown. The romances of these two "windfalls" begins with General Robt. Dudley Blake, son of General Sir Francis Blake, second baronet, who belonged to an old Northumbrian family. The held Twissel Castle, and in Durham, Tilmouth, and Segrill in Northumberland, and were very rich. While he was Captain in the Army, Robert Dudley Blake met in Dublin a beautiful Irish girl named Helen Sheridan, the daughter of a country schoolmaster. He fell in love with her, and had her educated in England, and married her in Lanarkshire in 1819. Their only child died in infancy, and left it all to his widow when he died in 1860. In the same year his brother, Sir Francis Blake, third baronet, died without legitimate issue, and the baronetcy became extinct. Sir Francis also left considerable property to his sister-in-law, Mrs Helen Blake. This lady died at Earlscourt terrace in 1876, and at the age of 76, without making a will. Her real estate was worth about £30,000, and the personal estate to about £119,000 more. The whole of the personal estate was seized by the Crown, and next-of-kin advertised for. But no one of the claimants who came forward from Ireland and America could satisfy the Court of Chancery that they were next of kin, and £24,000 having been spent in costs, the personal estate amounting to £140,000 remained in the hands of the Crown. In the district of Claremorris there are still Sheridan's who claim to be related to Helen Blake, but they are too poor to push their claims. The second Blake intestate comes in this way : Sir Francis Blake, the third baronet, had several children to whom he bequeathed considerable sums at his death in 1860. One of them was Mr Fred K Blake, who has just died at Crawley. He was formerly an officer in the Army, and was never seen in the North of England, though he owned the Seghill estate of 400 acres, on which the Leycocks works their colliery. There was a rumour on the Tyneside that some poor relatives intended to claim the personal estate, which is valued at £43,000, but nothing has been heard of it in the Courts, and letters of administration of his property have been granted to the Solicitor to the Treasury, and his successors in that office "for the use of his Majesty." The Seghill colliery and the landed estates pass to the deceased's kinsman, Sir Francis Blake, first baronet of the 1907 creation, whose family bought the Seghill Park and other Northumberland estates from the Crown when Mrs Helen Blake died intestate. Altogether, the Crown has reason to be grateful to the Blakes for their "windfalls."
An example of this is Rev. Malachi Blake. The dates of death on my mourning rings are thus the correct date of death.

Ian Fisher

Hi
This family in line goes back to Robert De Blakeland in WFT Est. 1163-1247.His son Robert/Richard De Blakeland WFT Est. 1235-1306,Robert DeBlakeland. ROBERT DeBLAKELAND. Was assessed on the Wiltshire Roll of Subsidies granted
1286 to King Edward I. His son dropped the De in his name, Robert b. Abt. 1275, His son added it back Robert De Blakeland b 1301, Robert Blake, progenitor, dropped the particle "de" and suffix "land" from his name. He resided in Clane, adjoinging the family estates of Blakeland, where he was assessed to the subsidies of Edward III, in 1347 to an amount larger than any other citizen. He married Anne, daughter of William Cole.Their son Was Humphrey "Henry" Blake b. before 1330,Lord of Plainfield,Henry Blake m. Elizabeth, daughter and co-heir of Edward Dorrant(Durant)
Known son is William b 1360 he married Elizabeth Power,She was the daughter and heiress of Mr. Thomas Power. 2 known heirs, Henry b. 1383 and Robert b. 1390.
I also have more but this is getting long. My info came from the College of Arms in London England. They have to have as much about a family that is known so that the male child of a family can have a Family Crest made. And that Crest is just for that perticular family. Not the whole clan. That is why you will find several Blake family Crests. Each family has their own if it is requested and the bloodline is proven. Thus that is why the College of Arms has so much info on everyone in England. And there are volumes hundreds and hundreds of volumes on the Blake Families. A world of great accurate info is stored here.

Lord of Plainfield

Blake (Richards0n-Greenley)

Blake (Richardson/Greenley): Seeking ancestor/family information for Dorothea Blake (c1765-1828) born Ballinglen, Preben Parish, County Wicklow, Ireland, the daughter of John Blake of Ballinglen and possibly a g.grandaughter of one Cuthbert Blake. Dorothea Blake had siblings - John (married Mary Edge), Joseph, Robert, Cuthbert (d.1847) and Ann (c1779-1851, married George Edge). An early history of the Edge family (deposited with the William Salt Library, Staffordshire, in 1904) recounts that John Blake of Ballinglen (Dorothea’s father) was the grandson of Cuthbert Blake (who settled in Ireland), and that Cuthbert Blake was the second son of Cpt. Robert Blake of “Plymoth” (Plymouth?) The Edge family history also records that Cuthbert Blake’s elder brother (un-named) “defended the Blakes of Hollyford, County Wexford”. The Edge family history goes on to claim that Capt. Robert Blake was the nephew of Cromwell’s General of the Sea Robert Blake. Dorothea Blake first married (c1790) a man named Richardson by whom she had three daughters; Mary (b.c1791, married Cpt. William Richards), Ann (b.1792, married John Willoughby & William Biggar) and Elizabeth (b. c1794, married James Braiden). In 1801, at Ferns, County Wexford, Dorothea Blake-Richardson married John Greenley/Grinlay/Greenlee/etc (1775-1854) born at Knockadawk, Kiltrish Parish, County Wexford, a tenant of the White family at Peppardscastle. John Greenley served as a dragoon under Hawtrey White in the Ballaghkeen Yeomanry and was wounded in the 1798 Rebellion. By her second marriage Dorothea Blake-Richardson-Greenley had six children - George (infant death), John (1801-1850), Robert (1806-1899), Charlotte (1808-1828), James (1810-1893) and Jane (1813-1844)all born County Wexford. John & Dorothea Greenley, their children, and Dorothea’s daughter by her first marriage, Elizabeth Richardson, emigrated to Lanark County, (Perth Military Settlement), Ontario in 1817 via the vessel Betty & Mary.

Ron W.
James Joseph Blake - Victoria Canada

I am trying to find any information I can about my great grandfather.

According to his marriage entry and death entry his name was James Joseph Blake. Both the marriage and death entries I have are from Victoria, Australia.

According to his marriage entry he was 30 when he married in 1915 (making his birthdate about 1885). According to his death entry he was 72 when he died in 1952 (making his birthdate about 1880).

According to his marriage entry (from 1915) he was born in Victoria, Canada. According to his death entry (from 1952 - I assume from information he passed on to one of his children) he was born in Montreal, Canada.

According to both his marriage and death entries his father was also called James Joseph Blake.

According to his marriage entry his mothers maiden name was Mary Challis. According to his death entry his mothers maiden name was Mary Callus.

From word passed down from my grandfather and his brothers and sisters James Joseph Blake was certainly Canadian by origin [and possibly French Canadian - although there is nothing in his name which would indicate that to me]. I was told that he told his children he had spent time in the Yukon Gold Rushes in the late 1890s. I believe he 'jumped ship' in Australia sometime between 1907 and 1912. I understand it is possible that the ship he may have jumped from was a U.S. ship and not a Canadian.

I have had a look through both the 1891 census from Canada and the 1901 census and cant find any James Joseph Blakes who are the sons of a James Joseph Blake and a Mary Blake. I can find no indication of any person under the surname Callus.

If anyone happens to see anything relating to a James Blake which looks as though it might fit this guy, or if anyone has any ideas on other places I might look, then I would be mighty obliged if you could let me know.

Thanks for your time

James Blake

Re: Blake family in New Jersey.

Hello!

It seems that there are so many, many Thomas Blake people! My grandfather was a Thomas Blake who died in Kent, Washington in Nov. 1965, and his father is listed as a "Thomas Blake" with a NJ birthplace. His first wife (my grandmother) died in childbirth having twins (one lived and the other one died as did his first wife in this childbirth). There were 4 other children. My grandfather abandoned his children in the next few months (my mother lived with her maternal grandmother, the premature twin went to live with an aunt, and the other 3 went to an orphanage). My grandfather remarried two more times before dying...no more children as far as I know.

My grandfather was born in Cascade, Montana, and there are a lot of Blakes in Montana, but none seem to be related to my Grandfather. His birth certificate says that my great-grandfather is a Thomas Blake who was born in New Jersey. The age is about right for the Thomas Blake who lived in NJ married to Annie C. and lists mother and father as being born in NJ. Annie apparently died sometime after the 1880 census and left a daughter Nellie born 1876 and a son Edward born 1880. The 1910 census lists the NJ Thomas Blake as later being married to a Margaret Waters and they had a son named Thomas in 1903 and a daughter in 1892. What doesn't fit is that my gandfather was born in 1888 and the N.J. Thomas Blake's son Thomas was born in 1903...too far from the 1888 birthdate I have for my grandfather. Very confusing...all I have straight is the N.J. Blake who married Annie who died and then he married a Margaret Waters and moved to New York...but it doesn't appear they are even related!

I guess I'll have to join Ancestry for a while to get their information they have added in the past 6 years and see what I can find!

Cheryl Heine
moondust222@yahoo.com

Blake's of Montgomery North Carolina

The Blake's of Montgomery North Carolina pretty much stayed in Montgomery, with all the new information on Ancestry you can do a simple Census search from abt. 1780 to 1880.You can see the ones that lived there or moved. It starts with Thomas Blake and Randle Blake they are the only two heads of families on the 1790 Montgomery North Carolina Census. Many books have been written but many Blake,s are missing in these book's the records are very clear on the Census.
