Re: John Blakely and Rachel Orr- PA or CT?

There is a "History of the Blakely Family" compiled by Rev. William M. Blakely in 1946 that is in the Laurens Co., SC library. In it is a section that attempts to trace the arrival of the name in America. "A Thomas Blakely (also spelled Blakeslee, Blakesley, Blackley, Blachly and Blatchley) emigrated from London, England to America about 1635 and settled at Hartford, Connecticut: then moved to New Haven and later in 1645 to Stanford, Conn. His wife was Susannah Ball. Their children and descendants were given the following names: Abigail, Moses, David, Mehitable and Abraham. A brother of Thomas, Samuel, settled in the same colony and married Hannah Potter in 1650 by whom he was the father of John, Hannah, Mary, Samuel, Enernezer and Jonathan."
The writer could find no connection to the people in Pennslyvania, but maybe this is where the Conn. connection came from. The writer starts the family history with John and Rachel Orr Blakely in PA.

This does not prove or disprove the Conn. connection. Just information.

Good Hunting, Marcus

I have read 35 messages connected about John and Rachael Orr Blakely. You seem to have information about where they came from and their parents and grandparents. I would like to exchange information about the Blakely's. My wife is desended from John and Rachel to William and then Thomas W. (physician) moved to Arkansas, then Irvin, James and her mother Nettie Louise. I have been to Laurens Co., SC and researched. My e-mail is mlgann@comcast.net. Thanks in advance for any information.
Good Hunting, Marcus

My father was James Robert Blakely son of Rollo Blakely.
My dad was born in Creston, Iowa. My grandpa & grandma
were divorced when my dad was young. Never knew much about
the Blakely side except they were from Greenfield, Iowa,
Rollo was a mechanic. I don't even have any pictures.
The one thing I do know is before the great depression
my great Grandmother Blakely sold everything she owned in
Greenfield (which was quite alot) and her and the twins
moved to California. That is what I was told.

It was nice to actually meet someone from the Blakely side.
Write back if I can help, always wanted to know more about
my family.

Thank you,
Mary Ann (Blakely) Larkins
According to my father the Adam Blakely who was a blacksmith and for whom Blakelytown was named, was not his great-great-grandfather. I tend to believe this is true because if Adam Bickly Blakely was born in 1809 in MS he could hardly have owned a blacksmith shop in AR in 1810. I'm still trying to determine who his parents are.

In Arkadelphia, Clark Co. AR there is a historical marker telling that Adam Blakely operated a blacksmith shop there starting in 1810, and that the community was known as Blakelytown until it became known as Arkadelphia in 1838.

The land where the court house is located there was purchased from the government by William Blakely in 1825. The relationship, if any, between the Blakelys is not known by me.

According to Ancestry.Com, my John Blakely was born in 1714 in England, he married Elizabeth Fleming who was born in Ireland in 1720. There are a huge group of Blakelys from Laurens County near the town of Clinton, SC. I believe that John Blakely married Janet Orr and moved South from VA or PA. You might take a look at that bunch.

I'm going to be in SC next week for a couple of days and would like to try to find information on my ancestor, Chambers Blakely and the rest of his family if possible. I already know that the family arrived in Charleston, SC on board the Earl of Donegal in 1757.

What I'd like to know is where their land grants were. The old names of the towns (current names also). What happened to any of the sisters....it doesn't appear that they went to Nova Scotia with Chambers and David. Uncertain whether whether ther father went too. Does anyone know about their mother? Cemetery? Also interested in Battles they participated in.

Any leads to follow up on will be appreciated.

Please e-mail me at cccox1@gmail.com...easier to save to my lap top

Thank you.

Debbie Blakely Cox
Mom grew up in Henderson. Paul's father was William Sheridan Blakely, there were many siblings. Paul's youngest sister lives in Semi Valley and one of her daughters is still in Henderson. I'd love to see the picture, can you scan it. Please send scan to Gilligan@triad.rr.com
Thanks much,
Theresa

I am researching George Copeland, son of Margaret Blakely and have hit a wall. Do not have prime source which proves he is son of John and Margaret. I am interested in the Blakely book and am in contact with the librarian in Laurens, who has been very helpful. The SAR has accepted my husband's line until we get to George and then won't accept the tons of circumstantial evidence I have found linking George and Betsy (Elizabeth) Copeland to John and Margaret.

John Blakely and Rachel Orr- PA or CT?

I noticed a large number of people have placed family trees on Ancestry.com's website that denote John Blakely, born in 1718 Ireland (?) died 1798 in Laurens, SC and husband of Rachael Orr as coming from Connecticut as opposed to the long-standing origin of PA.

I tried contacting most of these people that have placed their family trees on Ancestry, but so far they have either not responded or have written back to say they have no idea why they have CT as his place of origin. There are Blakelys in CT, but I have do not know if or who they MIGHT be connected to John Blakely of PA and later South Carolina.

If anyone has info on early Blakely's in CT or PA or know Blakely researchers who might know if John is or is not from CT, I would sure appreciate hearing from them.

Thanks!

JHS usamom99 @ hotmail.com (pls remove spaces to contact me off-list.)

I am searching for kellyghowe who has a Blakely Family Tree on Ancestry.com

We have some of the same family members on our tree - namely
some Benders. I have been trying to reach her via e-mail but seem to find her. Is she part of your family and if so can you ask her to contact me.

sharonhatt@comcast.net
