I know John very well. We're related through the Blakeney, Ainsworth, Hester, and Jernigan families, so we can't even calculate our kinship! LOL He is one of the most dedicated and thorough researches the family has and his work is so valuable to so many because he does connect with so many major family lines that most of us are related to in multiiple ways. I knew growing up in Smith County it seemed I was relate to everyone. Now that I've been doing the research, I see that's pretty well true but it's even more fun to see "how" we're related.

And on my Gambrell side, "in addition" to the aforementioned multiple connections, I have to add in the Duckworths and Andersons who also married into more than one of these other lines So it's usually safe to say that if aa person is related to any and/or all of those Smith County families, I'm likely to be connected to them in one or more ways in every one of them.

Well, we have auburn hair in Jernigan family on my dad's side and other branches on my mother's side. But I was the only one in my more immediate family to inherit it. Most everyone else had black or blonde hair

It would be a stretch for me to attribute all the talent in the family to the Blakeney side as I have very talented relatives from all branches. Not being an immediate member of the Blakeney family, my great-grandmother having been the Blakeney, I know more about the talents of my generation and our kids and grandkids. Many are very talented that I know are Blakeney blood in them, so who knows. I'd love the names of the astronaut and actor/actress one so I can look them up on line and learn more about them.

In our immediate family, some of us have concluded we have "Windham features", BUT our Windham features may be the result of the Blakeney/Windham union of my great grandparents for all I know. LOL

In my little family group descended from Matilda Blakeney Windham through Donia Windham Gambrell, we're a relatively small family. Donia had 5 children. All 5 together only gave her 5 grandchildren, of which I'm the eldest. We're scattered all over the place and not all of us stay in touch, so I can only tell you a very little about them. One of my first cousin's lives in L.A. and works for a very well-known actress. She herself used to model in Hawaii. She was quite the beauty. Now she was the only one of the grandchildren who looked different from the rest of us . She had sort of tawny hair, olive complexion and brown eyes. The rest of us were all fair, blue eyed (except mine are green) and most had black or blonde hair. Anyway, her daughter and grandddaughter are stunningly beautiful. What's interesting is that in her daughter, I can see the smile my aunt had. So, I don't know if that's a Blakeney smile. It may well be. My grandmother had a much more lovely smile than my granddad. LOL

I also modeled some "back in the day". I have a natural gift for writing, so everyone has told me all my life, and I'm currently working on several writing projects. I just have so little time. But I'm actually working on a screenplay, after having acquired an honest-to-goodness Hollywood screenwriter friend who is mentoring me on the project. In fact, he has a movie in production right now. It's called "Hitchcock" and is, of course, based on the life of Alfred Hitchcock. Anthony Hopkins is playing Hitchcock, Helen Merrin is playing Mrs. Hitchcock. Scarlette Johansson is in it and I forget who all. I'm so excited for him and I'm so blessed to have him guiding me through writing my own screenplay.

I worked in the newspaper industry for years - but as a top advertising executive. I had wanted to get a degree in journalism, but I got sidetracked with marriage and family instead. Both my sons have the writing gene. My eldest writes poetry and composes music. Both can play several musical instruments by ear. I say "can". My youngest died in 1995, so he "could". It makes talking about them together challenging since I still haven't learned whether to say I have two sons or have to explain the whole thing. Anyway, my youngest was perhaps one of the most gifted people I've every known. Both can sing. Both are artistic. Now, all those genes skipped me. I can't carry a tune in a bucket and can even draw a decent stick person! LOL And both ranked very high nationally in things like math, etc., and I hate even balancing my checkbook.

My cousin in Calfornia has a fine looking son who has the "family look". He is in radio and is a musician also, I believe. So, there are definitely good looking and talented people in the family. I'm sure the Blakeney genes contributed, since all I've mentioned had them. But we have other accomplished people in the branches without Blakeney blood as well.

The cousin in California told me that my aunt always told them they were special, that they had been blessed. And they had every advantage of dance and music lessons, private school, etc. There did seem to be this "attitude" to being special that my grandmother has a reputation for but, honestly, I was related to everyone I grew up with and everyone was good looking, smart and talented. So I never felt like any one branch stood out as having more looks or talent than another. I guess we just all came from an awesome combined gene pool! LOL

That said, we all have genes from unrelated lines. I have a cousin who was a runner up in the Miss America pageant many years ago and her talent was singing, there are other cousins who have amazing musical talents - and none of them are related to the Blakeneys. Even my mother has the artistic talent I lack. You'd think with all that talent on BOTH sides of my family, I could at least sing! LOL It has been painful at times to be the only one with none of that talent, but I'm everyone else's cheerleader. :)

Anyway, all this research has helped me, at least, learn more about the expanded family we all share. I've heard from quite a few people from various lines and am always deighted to "meet" another cousin and learn about their particular family. It has taken me from feelng like I'm from such a small family to realizing that, overall, I come from a HUGE family. LOL

But, back to John. Not only does he have excellent research skills, but obviously has the writing gene as well. He's such a very nice person and so generous with his genealogical research. I probably communicate with him more than anyone else working on the family lines. I feel very blessed to have had his help. I'm sure I'm a nuisance with all my questions sometimes, but he is always so patient and will explain the complicated connections until I have it straight. LOL

As for the writing skills, I can't totally attribute that to the Blakeney genes. Margaret Mitchell who wrote "Gone with the Wind" is somehow related to my 5xgreat-grandparents John Newton Gambrell I and wife Barbara Bruton Gambrell. I was very surprised to stumble across that in an online search one day. On the official Mitchell site they have documents of her that state her being a descendent of theirs, but I've not been able to find a genealogical trail on her to connect the dots. There are lot of politicians and authors on the Gambrell side. Now, the Gambrells had unions with the Blakeneys and Ainsworths other than the line from my grandmother. It's all but impossible to keep it all straight. John and I were joking the other day about how the online software for family trees isn't made to compute family trees as complex as ours! I started out with the intention of keeping the trees of my parents separate and that of my ex-husband, which I was working on for my son. Well, low and behold! Back up the line, every single one of them are connected at some point. So it truly is just one huge family tree and I don't even bother to say, "Well, I'm not connected to that branch" anymore because that doesn't seem to be the case The relationship may be distant, but the connections are there. This being the case, I guess it would be impossible for me to determine which branch which talents come from, etc. because they all seem to have some common ancestors. That has been a fascinating discovery!

Sorry to be so chatty. I just love "talking family" and get caught up in sharing.

Best regards,

Debbie

AND, this cousin in San Antonio is the one who also has auburn hair, as does her daughter. This particular cousin is multi-talented: writer, artist, song writer, etc. A large number of Capt. John Blakeney's descendants are very, very talented. Of the more recent, one was an astronaut; another has been in many NY musical productions, as well as TV and motion pictures; one was a newspaper editor; one wrote religious hymns; many of them had beautiful voices, as well as played piano. My own son plays tenor sax and clarinet, also has worked in radio since he was 15-years old. At one time, he aspired to be a minister. Have you read (online) the "Blakeney Gazette"? If not, you should consider doing so .... it has interesting articles. The writer/editor is John Hester, also a Blakeney descendant.

Unfortunately, I have NO proof of Indian heritage among the Jerigans. I am just going by what my Mother told me, as well as "Blakeney research" by Mr. Richard Johnston, who went to county courthouses and researched local census records. So, I shall always wonder: From where did my brother's natural-tan complexion come; from where did my auburn hair come? And, why did my neice look like a stunningly beautiful young Indian maiden? As we noted, genetically, features can show-up generations down the line.

Along this line, often things happen that have no exclamation. I had never mentioned any Indian heritage; actually had forgotten that my Mother ever mentioned it,............until. A friend brought her houseguest from DC to my home to meet me. After introducing me, this lady looked at me and said, "You are of Indian heritage, aren't you?" This strange remark triggered the memory of what my Mother had told me. The only explanation the lady gave me was, that she felt it when she walked in my house. NO, I do NOT have it decorated with any Indian fare!

As for Blakeney connection: According to my records, James Thomas and Martha Matilda (Page) Blakeney had a son named Jacob, as well as a son named Robert Jacob. I have no information on Martha Matilda Page, other than she married James Thomas. I descended from their son Alvin, Sr. and Lucy Ann Jernigan. Interestingly, I have a first-cousin
(San Antonio) who also descended from them on one side of her family, and another generation down, from Jacob and Elizabeth on the other side!

Do you have any info on Martha Matilda Page Blakeney's Page line? I have never found anything on them at all. Any Page info would be a big breakthrough for me.

Jacob Blakeney and Elizabeth Jernigan Blakeney were my great-great grandparents. I saw somewhere where Jacob was listed as Robert Jacob. I know he had a son by that name. Do you know if they were a Sr. and Jr. or if it's in error that the father is also listed as Robert Jacob (only in some sources)?

There is enough evidence that I'm convinced Keziah Jernigan was a Coleman. And I found sources that list her mother's parents as Richard Faulk and Sarah Hinnant Faulk. I don't have concrete confirmation on that as yet though.

You can't go by skin tone to determine Native blood. I have auburn hair, fair skin and green eyes. I've never considered that I looked anything but a fair-skinned souther gal. But all my life I've had people ask me if I were part Spanish, Mediterranean, gypsy. I thought it must be my French ancestory they were seeing in me, but I couldn't even "see" that. Well, over the years I've learned I'm part Cherokee, Choctaw and Muscogee Creek - confirmed. I had a woman of Choctaw descent who looks very Indian to me tell me she thinks I look more Indian than her. So, go figure! I don't "see" it in me. Years ago when my sons were young, we went several times to the Annual Thanksgiving PowWow that the Poarch Creek have in Atmore, Alabama. They have their princess pageant each year and the contestants have to be registered members of the Creek nation. I've seen some that looked like they stepped out of "Dances with Wolves" and others in the same pageant have almost white-blonde hair, lily white skin and blue eyes. My son is extremely fair-skinned, has blue eyes, and blondish/auburnish hair (a really pretty but unusual color). Our nearest full-blood Creek ancestor was 5 generations back, so my son is like 1/128 Creek. LOL BUT, he has a unique skull shape that is so common among Creek males that it's called The Creek Knot. Len's is so pronounced that his grandfather called him Knothead as a child and as an adult he had to have an MRI once and the neurologist commented on his skull shape. Len was always embarrassed that his skull was "different" - until we learned it's from his Creek DNA, even this many generations later. In males in particular Y-DNA carries on "forever". It doesn't "run out" no matter how many generations. We even found a photo of a statue of a female ancestor from the late 13th century and Len clearly has very similar facial structure to hers. We have since learned there is a "Windham chin" and a "Windham nose" that we always thought was just a strong trait from our Gambrell line. Turns out it's from the Windham side that this 13th century statue shows us at least one example of it in a Windham ancestor that far back and it's still carrying forward. So you're absolutely correct about genetics carrying on for generations. That was what got us interested so much in genealogical research. My son wanted to know what went into making him - him. We've learned so much about who we are today from researching our ancetors. Len now is very proud of his skull shape that once embarrassed him. He loves to explain his "Creek Knot". LOL

It's interesting about the auburn hair. Auburn hair wouldn't be a natural hair color among Native Americans. But in my family branch with the Muscogee Creek and Choctaw lines (my mother's family), many of my grandmother's generation and down the line have had auburn hair. But, in these families one thing I've noticed is that many of the men who married Native women were Scottish or Irish and I think that's where the red-haired gene comes from and their descendants seem to often have auburn hair. The Blakeneys originated in Ireland, for example, so naturally some of us are going to get that red-haired gene from our ancestors like that. Native Americans would only have auburn hair if they were mixed blood and got that gene from their white ancestors. I'm sure lots of folks with auburn hair have no Native blood in them at all.

Anyway, I have found that the Blakeneys, Ainsworths, Windhams, Jernigans and Gambrells have multiple connections that result in some very complex relationships. I have found people I'm related to several different ways through all the various lines. I still have some dangling folks though who have one of those last names but I don't know which line they came from.

But back to the Native American lines, given that Native folks have turned up in several of my family lines, I think that marriages with Native Americans was more common than I would have previously believed. So now when I hear that there is a family story about Indian blood in the family, I don't dismiss it as just a fanciful family story. So far every such family store I've gotten to the bottom of was based in fact. That's not to say all will be, but it has led me to take the stories more seriously and believe there is a reason that story ever got started. Still, we need something to confirm it. I talked to another family researcher after reading your postings about Native blood in the Jernigan family. He said he has heard that before and would also love to find proof of it. He said that we know Keziah's family was white. I said, no, we actually know very little about them and have no way to rule out that there was never a union with any Native people in her background. I think even if we never find "proof", it's likely true. If it's not, it would be the first time such a rumor of Indian blood in the family proved to just be wishful thinking.

My ancestor was Alvin Blakeney, Sr., brother of Arrabella, Hugh, Jacob, Robert-Jacob, Matilda, and Eleanor (children of James Thomas Blakeney and Martha Matilda Page Blakeney). Brothers Alvin and Jacob married sisters.Alvin married Lucy Ann Jernigan;Jacob married Elizabeth Jernigan. (ROBERT Jacob married Annie Blair.) The alleged Indian heritage belongs to the Jernigan sisters, apparently through their Mother, Keziah. She was said to be one-half Cherokee, and a an auburn-haired beauty. My Mother, a Blakeney, told me of this. Also, Mr. Richard F. Johnston researched this issue. Lucy Ann's and Elizabeth's brother Harris Jernigan (son of Stephen and Keziah Jernigan) was his Great-Grandfater.Harris Jernigan married Effie Blackwell.

From research of census records, it is assumed that Keziah's Father was a Coleman; however, I have never previously heard the name Fauk mentioned.

Regarding the Indian heritage, my younger brother looked like a gorgeous little Indian boy when he was very young......beautiful tan complexion with dark eyes and hair. His daughter inherited the same coloring and is gorgeous. Although my Mother (a Blakeney and beautiful) had black hair and brown eyes, she had a fair complexion. No one else in my family had olive complexion, not even my parents. Then when I was young, I had auburn hair........neither of my parents did. Only one other female among all the many cousins has auburn hair. Genetics is a very interesting subject, in that features can show-up generations later. By the way, documentation for Blakeney ancestry through Alvin to Capt. John Blakeney has been accepted by the DAR.

Did you ever find out about any Indian blood in the Blakeney family? I'm curious because my great-great-grandfather was your Arabella's brother, Robert Jacob Blakeney. I've never heard any mention of Native American blood in the family. Would be interested to know if there was, but I can tell you for sure Arabella wasn't full-blooded Indian because neither of her parents were full-blooded Indian. If they were, my great-great-grandpa Jacob would have been also.

He arrived in Charleston, South Carolina in December 1757 on board the Earl of Donegal.

I have a DNA submission on file to help validate any possible connections.

Debbie Blakely Cox

I am interested in information regarding Benjamin Blakeney's first wife. I can't seem to find anything about her, but I saw that someone said she was buried in Tishomingo, MS. I'm also trying to find a connection with Martha Pinkston, his second wife, with other Pinkston/Hale/Felker's from Tishomingo. It seems I could also have Pinkston's from my husband's side of the family there!! This could mean 2 lines on my side and one on my husbands==oh, my!!! Benjamin Blakeney's daughter, Sarah, was my great-grandmother. You may contact me with oldies_68@yahoo.com

My name is Scott William Blakeney, and I've been extremely interested in your posts on myfamily.com on the Internet. Before finding your posts, I was able to research this far:

Self: Scott William Blakeney (MI) Born 1968
Dad: Robert William Blakeney Born 1943 (MI), Mom Beverly Ann (Jones) Blakeney 1942-1986 (MI)
G'Dad: William George Blakeney 1907-2003 (MI), G'Mom: Kathryn (Henig) Blakeney
GG'Dad: George Harvey Blakeney 1881 (KY) -1959 (MI), GG'Mom Mabel E. (Godfrey) Blakeney 1881-1947 (MI) [Father William H.Godfrey (NY),Mother Sarah (Anderson) Blakeney of NY; and? WGB married to Effie C. Blakeney (1887-1965)
GGG'Dad: George Blakeney (England), 1847/8-?, GGG'Mom Violet N. (Brown) Blakeney (Scotland)

The best I could find was that George Blakeney immigrated from England around 1850, but I don't know his parents names or anything beyond that. After that, he appeared in an Ohio census in 1870 with Violet and a Catharine Brown (attached image, line 20).

Do you any information from the 100 Pages of Blakeneys, as to where my GGG Grandfather came from, or can you share that document?

Thanks,
Scott William Blakeney

Luella May Carpenter Rebel

Luella May Carpenter Rebel--Sacramento, CA

Luella May Carpenter died after a long illness in Rancho Cordova, CA on Sunday, May 29, 2011 at age 82. Luella was born at home in Dana, Vermillion Co., Indiana on January 1, 1929.

“Lou” will be remembered for her quick wit, humor, warm nature and an uncanny ability to survive and prosper in trying circumstances. Her children are grateful to her for passing along these valuable traits to us. She will be missed but reside forever in our hearts.

As a child, Luella lived in and around the Dana, Indiana and Chrisman, Edgar Co., Illinois area with her parents and siblings. While living in Chrisman and working as a telephone operator Luella married Carl Bernell Yates (1924-1955 of Metcalf, IL) on February 9, 1946 in Paris, IL. Their union bore two surviving children, Ronald Eugene Yates (born 1947) and Patricia Lynn (born 1951). Luella returned to Dana, Indiana after the death of her first husband.

Luella married Edward Otis Newlin (born 1925 of Newport, IN) on July 5, 1958. Their marriage produced one son Glen Dale (born 1959). Luella and Edward ultimately divorced. Luella then married George Leslie Pearson (1915-1989 of Vermilion Co., IL) on June 29, 1972. Luella and George relocated to Sacramento, CA in the early 1980’s. After Mr. Pearson’s death, Luella married John Rebel (1934-1995) in 1990. She also shared a special relationship with Mr. Victor Zamora Almaraz (1939-1996).

Luella was one of four children born from the union of LeRoy Fremont Carpenter (1879-1964) and Nellie Mae Blakeney (1890-1963) who were married May 2, 1923 in Danville, Vermilion Co., IL. Her siblings were Lyman Wesley (1924-1983), LeRoy Cephas (born 1926) and Gladys Loraine (1931-2008). Luella also had four older half-sisters from a previous marriage that united her mother Nellie and Robert Bryant (1890-1923) on December 25, 1910. These half sisters were Myra Mildred (1911-1985), Thelma Arvilla (1914-1990), Gertrude Louise (1918-1984) and Alma Bernice (1922-1924).

Luella is survived by her brother LeRoy Carpenter of Siloam Springs, AR; daughter Patricia Parker of Citrus Heights, CA; son Glen Dale Newlin of Osseo, WI and son Ronald Yates of Charlotte, NC as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Interment will be at Lakeside Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Folsom, CA next to her late husband George Pearson.

Luella is my mother.

I know your message is a few years old, but hopefully you'll get this message.

I have information on Louise Allen Blakeney, and some on her husband. Louise was the daughter of James Blakeney and Mary Allen White (his second wife). James Blakeney was the son of Capt.
Junanita,
My grandfather John Franklin Blakeney was a younger son of Benjamin. Born in Eddy county NM July 4 1900. After my grandfathers mother died, Benjamin had additional children by another wife. One Robert who die a few years ago in San Angelo, TX. I only remember meeting William at a family reunion in campwood, tx back in the 1980's. I would love to see the book.
Shirley

Jacob Blakeney/Elizabeth Jernigan Portraits

Hi,
I recently came across what are supposed to be portraits of Jacob Blakeney (1825-1889) and wife Elizabeth Jernigan (1832-1891) using another family tree website. I have since found that the person who had posted them on that site had originally fount them here on ancestry.com, on another family tree. Apparently they first appeared in 2010 and have been making the rounds.

Does anyone have information on who has the originals? The copies I have are very small, low res images and I would like to see if better copies can be obtained. I would also like to confirm that they are actually portraits of Jacob and Elizabeth. If anyone has any information, please contact me at jfhester@verizon.net.

Thank you,
John Hester

OH MY...
I am glad that you picked up on that little detail as well, as many Blakeney researchers say that Thomas is not the son of John SR when that is pointed out, but turn around say the opposite when it suits their purposes(and charts). Please send email address so I can send both the original and transcript. Regards, Gary.
