Re: BLAYLOCK/BLALOCK/DUKE

I am researching Duke/Blalock also. Archie Robert Duke was my grandfather, b, Dec. 25 1888. His father and mother were Robert Archie Duke and Sarah Caroline Blalock. The 1870 census shows that Sarah C. was daughter to Elhanna W. Blalock and Sarah H. I believe Robert Archie was born in Ireland. I found in the 1891 England census a Valentine Duke and Caroline G. who had a son named Robert. I haven't proven they are in my line, I'm thinking they are. I also found Sarah Caroline in 1910 census and 1930 census. Hope this helps.
Hello Emily and all,
The John S. Blalock that married Elizabeth "Betsey" Leverett was a gr-gr-grandfather to me. He came to Meriwether County from Wilkes/Lincoln County in the early 1830's. Census data records his birth as 1808. He married Elizabeth Leverett in Greenville, Meriwether County, in December 1838. The marriage is recorded in the Marriage Book in the courthouse in Greenville, Meriwether County,Georgia. His father was also John Blalock. The father died in 1841 or 1842 in Meriwether County. The John Blalock that died in Wilkes/Lincoln County was a grandfather to John S. Blalock. John Blalock (grandfather and son) were originally from Surrey County, North Carolina. There is a John Blalock that is listed as a Revolutionary War soldier in North Carolina. It is not known if this is the same John Blalock that died in Meriwether County in 1842. There are many men with the name John Blalock from that area.
Take care, Ellen Fisher

William Stewart Blalock, 1795 married Sarah (Sally) Hargis. I can't find evidence (other than heresay) that she ever used the names "Staylong" or "Rutledge".
Marriage bond: Sally Hargis, William Blalock, Person Co. Bond # 000094879 January 11, 1817, Bondsman: John W. McCracke, Witness: Joseph A. Woods
It's unlikely she was married before, and I can find no record of her after the 1840 census. If anyone has additional info. on her I would appreciate it. I'd also like info. on her desdendants. In divorce William said she left him with 5 small children but I can find record of only 3 children.

My grandparents were also Anna Maude Blalock and Arthur William (or William Arthur) Blaylock of Washington County, VA I am also searching for their parents names. I did find a copy of a marriage certificate with their names spelled the same way (Blalock) with only the initials with the names Blalock as parents for both. They were also married in Washington County VA. My mother was one of her daughters, Ina Pauline Mays. If you find out anything more about the Cherokee blood line, please email me. Ewing.

Their daughter, Bobbie Imogene Davis is my maternal grandmother.

My grandmother Bobbie Imogene Davis is still living. She told my mother that she was part Cherokee/to never give up on find our Indian roots. This has not been an easy task seeing that many hid their heritage during that time frame.

Census records show John Wilson Bartow Davis as 'Black' and working as a servant in 1870 and 1880.

There are some pictures posted of Bartow, and his skin is dark, but he does not appear to be african american, he looks more native american.

I have been researching the Hicks family and have the Hicks connection to Augustus and Leaston Blaylock. Several Ancestry trees list his parents as John A Blaylock and Susan Montgomery.

Lester was one of 6 children born to Augustus Eugene Blaylock and Malinda Leaston Hicks. Malinda Leaston Hicks was the daughter of James Newton Hicks and Malinda Jane Stewart.

Hi,

My father is a decendent of one of the Blaylock lines from Putnam Co TN. He was told that his grandmother was a native American but I could find no evidence of that. According to records his Grandfather Andrew Jackson Blaylock married a woman named Mary Kimes. Do these names sound familiar to you? Where in TN are your people from?

Contact me at foxhill@ngsassociates.com.
Yes, I can prove Thomas F. Bennett was Micajah's brother. Both were named in their father Richard's Granville Co., NC Will. Both Thos. F. and Micajah were in Albemarle Co., Va ca1773. That's where MicajahB. and Reuben Rowland were charter members of the 1st Baptist Church in that county. The two men went onto become Baptist preachers and started the Duncans Creek Baptist Church in Laurens Co., Sc ca 1790. I am Reuben's GGGGG granddaughter through his dtr Mary whomd. Dr. John H. Bush in Sc ca 1793.

Micajah Bennett, Jr was also in Illinois and then I think finally Iowa.
Please contact me!
Linda

I checked a message you wrote in 2007. It says that Thomas F.(Fullilove) Bennett was the brother of Micajah Bennett. What evidence do you have to support that? This would discount all the people who have claimed that Micajah descended from Richard Bennett of King & Queen County. We always thought it strange that Micajah was not listed with that Richard's other children. We also wondered if Micajah had been given a different name at birth and then changed it to Micajah when he became a Baptist. If you have info on Thomas F. Bennet and Micajah, you may have broken through our brick wall!
The widow, Eleanor Johnston Bennett and her youngest son, Johnston Bennett, traveled to Indiana and then to Kentucky with her eldest son, John Johnston, his wife Sophia and Sophia's father John Clawson.I do not know why they chose Indiana and later KY. Reuben Rowland and his family plus the Lewis family of the Duncan Creek Baptist church travelled to KY in late 1700's or early 1800's. I suspect they were attracted to the frontier and the bounteous game and farmland.
Micajah's eldest son, Micajah, Jr., travelled to the south after leaving S.C. He was also a Baptist minister. We found mentions of Micajah Bennett performing weddings in Miss. (?) or Ala.(?) in 1800's. James Lewis Bennett remained in VA.

I found a Melvina Blalock on the 1880 census living in Pope, Ark. She was 7 yrs. old. Born in Ark. Father Benjamin Blalock, white male, age 33. He was b. about 1847 in Ga. His father and mother were b. in NC. Her mother was named Susan, b. in Tn. Melvina had a brother, Henry, and 3 sisters.
In 1930, Melvina and John lived in Lester, Okfuskee, OK.
Can't find them on any other censuses, but there is a family tree with some info on John. He died in Imperial, CA in 1946. According to the funeral record for him, he was buried in Yuma, AZ. Aussie, one of their sons lived in Yuma. Johnny L.,Omar M., Homer N., Preston, and Eddie McDaniel are listed on record. Melvina is listed as Vina.
Hope this helps. Happy new year!
