I was wondering if, after the immigration of the BLAZ family to Philadelphia, the anglicized version 'Blauss' was kept by your family in America, or if they continued to refer to themselves as Blaz. This may be helpful in some of my research, as I have not yet come across altered surnames of my own name, BLAUSS. Thanks for any information you can offer.

I have just this moment received an email from my Sister in Law, from Yorkton, Saskatchewan. Her great grandfather was Alexander BLAZ and he apparently had two brothers, that went to Chicago area following some political turmoil in the mid to late 1800's in Russia. I will be checking further on this while in Yorkton for the Christmas Season. Stay tuned.

Dave, Kamloops, BC

As far as family knows, grandpa Stanley swore the name was not shorten nor changed.
Polish pronunciation was /Bwash/ as name was written with slash through "l" and dot over "z".
U.S. descendants all use Blaz /Blaze/.
Blaz name also has Philipino ties in surname searches.

He could of very well had a brother named Florian as I have no idea of the supposedly two brothers who immigrated to the U.S. Maybe we can help each other - email me @ jltoews@shaw.ca

Thanks for your speedy reply . Firstly, I'm not too familiar with the Roots.com site, and its workings, so I don't know if this reaches you directly in your e-mail, or if it must hang in cyberspace until you scout through the Roots site again.
In any case, I reside on Vancouver Island in B.C. Canada, My grandparents (Florian Blaz and Anna Poldan) immigrated to Philadelphia,as I mentioned, about 1902.
She came from the Slovenian town of Krkavas (spelling?)
and he, I believe, from Maribor or at least in the area between there and Graz, Austria. I understand that he graduated a university in Graz as a journalist, and married Anna who was a domestic employee of his family. It seems that his family totally rejected the marriage for class-social reasons, and they left for the USA. In immigrating, the family name was anglicized to "Blauss", although the original Blaz is stated on their marriage certificate issued in Haverstat, N.Y.. He returned, however, to Europe to cover the war, and was later considered dead, BUT, my mother intercepted a letter as a child, and learned that he was alive. I must assume he simply "walked out" of the marriage due to family pressure. My mother often mentioned that his family was considered "Von Blaz" to denote status, however I haven't seen any reference in my futile searches to that as a name.
Best close for now, wishing you well in your roots-hunting.
If you find any possibly relevent Blaz info, I'd greatly appreciate your sharing it.
My grandfather, Florian Blaz immegrated to Philadelphia about 1902, as well. I've had no success locating any info on him, as he returned to Slovenia/Austria as a journalist during WW1, and seems to have disappeared. I'm told his family was of aristocracy. Have you ever come across reference to Florian Blaz?
