Jim~

Sorry that's it's taken me 9 years to look at this again. I'm a little confused by your response below. My Grandfather was Orville. The story that I had always heard was that his parents, in need of money, sent my grandfather to America to work the farm of a family friend. That farm was the Peterson farm, of which he later married Hazel. They had 7 children. It is very possible that we are related and this Julius could very well be my great-grandfather. It would be nice to know!

I am descended from Anders Blegen who was my great grandfather who migrated from Hadeland, Norway in 1856. My grandfather was Edward and wife Karine Kroshus Blegen. My father was Ignus and wife Gina Sylling Blegen from Spring Grove, MN.
Second cousin Jim Blegen from Columbus, OH whose grandfather was Olaus Blegen researched the Blegen name in USA and determined there were two Blegen clans in U.S., both having lived on the Bleiken farm in Norway, but not blood related. The "other" Blegen clan has many educators and religion persons including Dean Theodore Blegen of the Univ. of MN. who headed the MN Historical Society later.

Yes, I know of "Dutch" Blegen, I think I even have a picture of the two of them together somewhere, but what I'm looking for goes even further back. Do you know much about their parents, or, further back yet, do you know anything about how many generations the Blegen family has been in America?

Ted, any chance that your Harold Blegen was in Spokane, Washington around 1954? I have a pocket bible that was found in my mother's belongings. She traveled quite a bit and I imagine she may have picked it up at a thrift shop. It has the name Harold Blegen, the date 1954, and Spokane, Washington written in the inside cover. There are no other notations or anything of historical content but I though perhaps the family of this man would like to have it. Does this sound like something familiar?

I am also looking into this family. My grandfather's sister was married to Lisbeth's brother. Both families were living in Coon, Vernon co., Wisconsin in 1880. Lisbeth and Jorgen (Olson) had at least three children there, John (Johannes), Halvor and Ole. The youngest, John, was with them when they left Norway in 1875, but is not in the family in the 1880 census of Vernon. I have Lisbeth's pedigree well described. There were also a daughter which I cannot account for. she did not go with them to the US. Johannes went in 1871, four years ahead of his parents and siblings.

I would be pleased if you could send me an e-mail.

Same reply as to Michelle Spring. Michelle Spring, you and I, all have Anders Blegen as our great grandfather. Your grandfather, Julius, was my grandfather's brother--born three years earlier in Spring Grove. His name was Peter Olaus Blegen, though he dropped the Peter and went by Olaus A. (for Andersen--son of Anders) Blegen. I have reconstructed much of the Spring Grove family--but with Julius, I end with his marrying Hellena.
Reply to Michelle Spring--Granddaughter Julius

What a surprise! I just recently assembled genealogy of my ancestors. Your grandfather Julius was the brother of my grandfather, Peter Olaus Andersen Blegen, son of Anders. He was born in Spring Grove, MN in 1860.
I have identified two other brothers, Edward, born 1855 and Cornelius, born about 1869; and one sister, Martha Maria born about 1859. I also have identified Anders brother Ole I. Blegen, his three daughters and one son. Also their first generation offspring and those of my grandfather's four sons and beyond. I obtained this information from Reel #74 of the archives of the Evangelical Lutheran church in America--which had transcribed to microfilm, the logs of the Apring Grove chyurch they all attended, now called Trinity Lutheran. From work of other Blegens who did extensive searches, I know that Anders, his brother Ole and their father Ingebrigt (later Anglicized to Ingebret all came from the Blegen gaard (loosely a farm) whose name they took)locatead at Faaberg, Gudbrandsdalen, Norway--which is near Lillehammer--about 70-80 miles north of Oslo.
So you and I both have the same great, great grandfather.
I would greatly enjoy hearing from you.
Jim Blegen
926 Highview Drive
W.

W. Worthington, Ohio 43235-1237
e-mail address JibobB@aol.com

My dad was from Arco Minnesota. Robert Louis Blegen was his name. His fathers name was Marcus Blegen. He had two brothers named Mark George. Unfortunatley death has a way of slowing down the family tree. Any info you may have or could lead me to would be apreciated.
