Thank you for posting this obituary for my great grandfather, George Washington Bless. There is a relationship to Pittman in Brown Co Indiana: Geroge's brother Jacob Bless married Sarah J Pittman 1866-1946 who lived in Brown Co, Indiana in 1880. Her father was Peter Pittman 1818-1900.

Torsten, I have been trying to find where my family came from in Germany since 1974. I was stationed in Germany '69-72. I can go back to Christoph Bless (Christopher Pless) who lived in NC 1762 to 1789 when he died. He was born about 1732 and we think in Germany. His wife's name was Hannah. The early records list him as Bless but his children changed to Pless about 1800. In NC he was a member of the Lutheran Church. If you find anything about him I would appreciate hearing from you.
Chuck Pless

Hi, Dawn (and all the other Americans with surnames like "Bless" and "Pless")!

I am a 32-year-old "family member" from Cologne, Germany, and although I cannot offer very specific information about the origins of "our" family name, I remember having read some information at least once. As far as I remember "our" name is indeed German, and most of our ancestors came from the Lower Rhine Area, the district where I was born as well. But as it appears the "Blesses" are a very widespread-family. My father doesn´t come from that area at all, he was born and raised in Danzig, Eastern Prussia, since the end of the 2nd world war known as "Gdansk" (and now part of Poland).

I try to get some more information. If you want to eMail me, you´re welcome!

Sincerely,
Torsten Bless (torstenclg@gmx.de)
Clarence BLESS, Mitchell Co., IA

Hello!
I am researching my husband's family background and am having a difficult time finding any information about the Bless family. My husband's grandfather was Clarence Bless. I believe his family has lived in the Mitchell Co. Iowa area for many, many years but I am getting nowhere trying to find record of his parents. The information about the Alsace-Lorraine area of Germany is probably correct as most of the early German immigrants in this area did come from that region.
I have record of one of his relatives marrying a woman by the name of Hasse here in Mitchell Co. I wonder if they could have been the original immigrants?
Family rumor says the Bless name is English - but the present generation is half Norwegian and they carry some prejudice here toward Germans!
If anyone has information about this family please let me know I would be happy to share anything I can find.
I have not been able to find much on Bless name either. Bless and Pless are both German names. I have been told that in the southern part of German the B uses the sound of a P, and the P uses the sound of B. I have talked to both Pless and Bless families in Germany and they have been no help. I feel that Pless and Bless may be the same family name but have no proof. Christoph Bless (Pless)is first found in NC with a German group from the Rheine River reagon where Germany, France and Switzerland comes together. These people came to NC from Pa. At first they came from Europe to NY, then NY closed NY and William Penn spoke to Queen of England and he brought them to Pa. You may want to check port of NY arround 1700-1710 for Bless.
Chuck Pless

Yes! This is part of my family and I thank you!. But - you are wrong about one thing. My great aunt Charlotte, one of George and Mary's daughters, was married and did have children. I can't think of her married name, but she had 2 daughters, Gloria and Barbara. My great Aunt May was born February 25, ? Florence (Katherine's first child) is my mother. Katherine's first husband, Florence and June's father was Herbert Swann, and I can find nothing on him - it's as if he never existed nor has his family ever existed.
Thank you again!
The
one I was looking for may be one of his children you listed (George 1877-). This George (born in 1877) died approximately in 1949-1950. He married a Mary Richardson,
and they had 4 children - Katherine Eva, Charlotte, May and
George III. This family was in the Philadelphia area for a long time before moving to New Jersey. Once again - THANKS!!
