THere were 21 children. Something was "under the table" but there was a ticket.

I will call his daughter again..I think with 21 brothers and sistes, and I think all emigrated, there should be lots of relatives...I am thinking she said COnnecticut or Rhode Island.

Yes I do know the Cairn Hill Tavern. I hail from the next parish to Drulish, so the tavern is 4 miles from my home.

Pat died in Sweet Home Oregon. He has a daughter whom I talked with a few years back. I think she was his only child. He married into a family in the logging business. I have written down at work where he was from in Ireland..there was a large family of brothers and sisters and each brought the next over. The daughter was interviewed for an Oregon paper a few years back about Christmas ornaments or something and it mentioned she was a daughter of a Titanic survivor. He had so many brothers and sisters..and I think they were settled at the time in Connecticut or Rhode Island..that there are undoubtedly relatives. When i get back into town I will post where he is from.

I really would like someone who is a historian to interview his daughter, assuming she is still alive and well, and get him on the list of survivors and tell his story. I know that George Millar of the irish Rovers has just written a great song about the Titanic and has an interest so I have written him as he might know someone. I have contacted historians and journalists etc. directly and they don't seem interested but to me this is a great story about a great man..there is no doubt about him making up stories etc..he was a most stalwart man, pillar of the church etc...

I hesitate to put his daughter's name on a public board but I will contact her with any information that is posted..looking for relatives etc. thanks. Our fathers were friends but I do not personally know her. mg

My name is Bob Blessington, I live in Wisconsin, USA and I am researching the Blessington surname.

Your post mentions the surname Farrell. I doubt if it is any help to you but I found a Dr. Albert Martin Farrell married to Margaret Blessington. He was born at Fort Dodge, Iowa August 6, 1876. He was a Lt. Col. in the Medical Reserve Corp as well as a physician at Two Rivers, WI. He died January 12, 1939 in Hong Kong, China. If you think this is a person that fits into your research let me know and I will be glad to help.

In June of 1997 my wife and I were in Drumlish, in County Longford researching the Blessington surname. We stopped at the Cairn Hill Tavern that is owned by Brendan Dillon and his wife Bridget Blessington Dillon. We haven't been able to find a connecting link between Bridget and myself as yet.

My earliest Blessington ancestor is Michael Blessington. He was born in Cloone, County Leitrim, IR. and died at age 101 in Quincy, IL. Michael immigrated to the U.S. in 1834 I believe his father's name was Terrence.

Now for my questions:

1. Are you familiar with Cairn Hill Tavern in Drumlish?
2. Can you suggest a "Blessington" in either County Longford or County Leitrim that is interested in Genealogy and would be willing to correspond. Can you suggest a local resource that might be helpful?

I'll stop at this point and hope to hear from you soon.

I knew Pat. I was about ten yrs old and Pat was sitting in the library of my grade school I attended in Lebanon Ore. prior to a Christmas program. He was asked about his experiance and He began to tell his story. Before long many of us were captivated as we listened to his account of what happened, It was amazing the many years later as I watched the movie Titanic how much of Pats story came to life. How as a third class passenger they locked the doors and were forced to break it down to escape. too the sound of the people when they hit the water...Pat broke down as he remembered that horrific event..His Irish accent making it hard to understand all of what he was saying...He seemed to carry alot of that night with him and that was 1970 or so..

John Blessington 1785-1865, Margaretta Riely Blessington,1794-1878 came to the U.S. in 1839 with 12 children. Ann1815, Charles 1815, mary 1817, My GG-grndmother Bridget 1823. She married Nicholas in about 1941 and then Thomas Muldoon in 1854. James abt 1823, Margaret Louise 1828, Phillip 1830, Thomas 1832,Catherine 20 May 1835, Elizabet 1837. Most of them are burried in Millcreek Cemetery in Clinton Iowa.

Somewhere I picked up that Terrence Blessington was Michael's father... No proof. Could John be a brother of my Michael or at the very least, his uncle?

See Michael Blessington has me confused. His first three kids were supposedly born in NY 1834, 1836 & 1837. Then they moved into Ohio where the other three were born. I am not throughly convinced that the first three kids are Margaret Dimond's kids. Then from there, they moved into Des Moines Co., Iowa and eventually Illinois.

The story I was told was that after my Bridget died, my GG Grandfather, James Tollen went back to the Blessington home and married Catherine. HOWEVER, I just found the marriage record for James and Catherine and they married in Des Moines Co., Iowa 1874! It was a shotgun wedding because 3 months after they were married, their son Thomas was born. LOL

Now, in 1870, James and Bridget as well as Michael and Catherine were in Illinois.

In 1880, Michael was living with his son, Terrence, in Missouri and I was not able to find him in the 1900 census AT ALL... I tried all the usual mis-spellings. He wasn't with his son Terrence either.

Someone said he went back to Illinois and died in 1907? I have seen no proof of his death so I can't say 100% that's true.

Roy and Helen Tollen were my grandparents. All but one of their kids are living.

Here is a story about Roy…

Roy was the 8th child born to James Vincent Tollen and Clara Ann Reynolds. He was born in Red Oak, Montgomery Co., Iowa USA. He lost his mother when was only 11 (1921) and he went to live with his sister Helen Tollen and her husband Thomas J. Gray. In 1923, Roy's father died and Helen became pregnant and thought it was best if Roy went to Father Flannery's Boys Town in Omaha NE. Roy was determined he would NOT stay there so he ran away the very first night! Once they found him missing, they began searching for him in the area around the home. Roy hid under an embankment on Douglas St. until they all had given up the search. He then walked to a bridge and paid 5, of the thirty five cents he had in his pocket, to cross. He found a drug store and called his Uncle Lee (Thomas Lee) who in turn called Roy's Aunt Mary. Mary sent her son Frank to pick him up and bring him to live with her and her husband, Ed Good until he finished High School. While attending High School, Roy lettered in both track and football. He graduated with the class of 1928. After graduating, he continued to live with the Good family. (1930 Census). He drove a truck for a paving company and owned a brown Model T Roadster.

His cousin ran a pool hall in town and Roy loved to play pool and snooker on his free time. He became quite good at it! He said he sometimes made more money in one night of playing pool than he did a week on the job. On Nov 11, 1932 in a celebration cermony, he married Helen Rosene Jahnke. They were one of three couples married that night. The depression of the 30's were hard on Roy and his family and he came up with creative ways to make money. They raised chickens and rabbits and Roy always had a garden. In about 1942, Roy moved his family out west to Denver, Colorado and eventually took a job with General Iron where he learned to weld which lead to his career as a boilermaker. He worked all over Colorado and was one of the founding members of the Boilermakers Union #101. Roy worked well into his 70's, long after most men retired. During World War II, Roy was in the Army Reserve. Roy was teased at times because his intials spelled RAT and he hated it! As soon as he was able, he had his middle name legally changed to Vincent (his father's middle name).

Roy was the father of six children all are still living except one, a son, Don, who died in 1968 in a drowning accident. Family was very important to Roy and he made it a point to pile the kids in the car and make trips back to Iowa to visit his relatives. He was still making trips back there in his 80's! On Sunday's, he often took the kids to the mountains. His oldest daughter remembers ice skating and sledding in Evergreen, CO. He also took the boys camping, fishing and hunting. One of his boys passed down the tradition by teaching his sons to hunt, and they still hunt! Roy was a dog man. He always had black labradors and he trained his dogs well and treated them like royalty. They knew how to fetch the paper every morning! His mornings consisted of a cup of coffee, the newspaper and a cigarette at his kitchen table and his faithful dog at his feet.

As hardworking and loyal a family man he was, he is also remembered as being somewhat opinionated and set in his ways. He was at times stubborn and cantakerous but he was also a teaser (in a good way) and down right hilarious at times. Roy and his wife, Helen, lived in Englewood Colorado for over 30 years. In his retirement, he loved to go down to the senior center and shoot pool (where he still holds the record to this day). He loved to drive too. Always had his butt in the car going somewhere. In his mid to late 80's, Roy lost his license because his eye sight got so bad and that was the beginning of the end for him. I heard him say that if he made it to 90 he would die happy. His body was slowing down and got to where he needed help up and down. He had an old back injury that gave him pain and it came time to go to a nursing home. When his kids told him, he first concern was for his wife, Helen and who was going to take care of her. They assured him she would be well taken care of. His mind remained sharp as tack up until his abrupt death at age 89 on the very day they were going to move him to the nursing home. 21 Jun 1999. They came into the house and found him on the floor. Just as he was determined not to go Father Flannery's all those years ago, he was just as determined not to go to the nursing home! He is buried in the Littleton Cemetery, Littleton, Colorado.

Thank you so much for your reply. Although Bernard Blessington born 1825 will not be the father of my Ann Blessington, there could well be a connection. Blessington is quite an unusual name and Bernard to so I'm guessing that it is more then a coincidence. Perhaps this Bernard's father and Ann's father were brothers. I would be very interested to learn more on this family.

I know of another Bernard Blessington, born about 1825 in Leitrim. I think his father's name was Michael. Bernard emigrated 1844 to Lowell, MA and married "Ann" in 1848-9 (I am not certain of her maiden name, but could probably round up her Date of Death if you need it). They had several children, but unfortunately, Bernard was killed in 1862 at the 2nd battle of Bull Run during the Civil War. He is possibly buried in Lowell, MA.

He is not a direct relation of mine; probably a cousin. I just stumbled on his info while researching my Blessington's (also from Leitrim). If you are interested, I might have some more less detailed info about his ship, family, etc...

I don't know if this helps, but my Blessington connection, Catherine Blessington abt. 1820 married Barney Dolan. They emigrated to Lawrence/Haverhill Mass. around 1846. In the years following, they seemed to be close with a Welch family. Barny used the Welch's as contact info on more than one occasion. Also, I believe one of the Dolan daughters married a Welch around 1870, perhaps in Lowell?

Looks like there may be a connection. Have you had as much trouble researching the family as I have? I cannot find a birth record for John's wife Mary (nee Welsh) supposedly born Co Mayo Ireland to a James & Mary Welsh abt 1840. James was a Hawker.

Definitely some connection, but i'm not sure what. The Dennis Blessington in the 1871 Census must have been the son/nephew of my Dennis Blessington that died three years earlier in Leitrim. If that is the case, and the birth date of Dennis of 1809 is correct, maybe my Dennis really was born around 1774 and mary Travers was actually born well before 1800. Just speculation, I suppose.

Sorry for the delay in answering.
I have a copy of John & Mary's Marriage Certificate and it states he was aged 24 years when they married in 1858. I have have a copy of his Australian sons Birth Certificate and he was born in 1874 and states his fathers age as 39.
On the 1871 England Census I have found John and Mary along with Dennis all living at the same address. Dennis's age is listed as 62 so he would of been born abt 1809

Hi Jenny, I have a relative named Catherine Blessington, born abt 1825, who was the daughter of Dennis Blessington from Crummy, Kiltubbrid Parish, County Leitrim.

Her parents were Dennis Blessington (1774-April 4, 1868)and Bridget Travers (abt. 1800- March 18, 1870). Catherine married Barney Dolan abt. 1845, and lived primarily in Haverhill, MA, and died in 1878. She had one sister that I know of, Margaret (1828-1903), who was married to Michael Dooley and lived in Groveland, MA. there may have been another sister, Bridget that lived in CT, but I am not certain.

I think it is highly likely that your John, and my Catherine were siblings. From the research I did a few years ago, I think there may have been only one Dennis Blessington in all of Leitrim at that time.

Are you certain about John's birthdate? Dennis Blessington's death record from 1868 stated that he was 94, which may have been inflated. If not, he would have been 60 at John's birth.

Am looking for Bernard Blessington and have found listed one in County Fermanagh. He would be born early 1800's.

Would like to know anything at all in connection with him. Have daughter Ann Blessington who was born around 1836/1837 in Ireland. Understand she married someone called Conroy. She went to India and re-married but it is her earlier life I am searching for.

My apologies for the vagueness but have drawn blanks so far and Irish Family History is very new to me. So if anyone can help at all, how ever little, would really appreciate information.

Hello Lesley, Thank you kindly for replying to my message. Would like to ask how you found regimental musters relating to where Joseph Cuthbert had travelled? I seem to have read that the regiment were in Ireland but could not establish as to when as wondered if he married Ann in Ireland. Did send for one certificate of a Frances Cuthbert but thought it was a son rather then daughter born there but no real information on it. I did find Frances on a later census in Liverpool and then in Manchester with a Bernard Luby. I have not come across the name John Walton at all. Do have Mary Jane's birth cert from Halifax and the names showing were Blessington and Conroy.

The link to Co Longford was a long shot, as found Blessington's there and an Ann Blessington born a similar time but gained no further information at all. I did advertise but without success. I've searched for a marriage in England but without success at all. I wondered if the records of 77th Regt for Joseph would show further information but not sure where to find them.

Ann Blessington was Conroy before she married Joseph Cuthbert. I have no idea where they married but he was in the 77th Regiment of Foot from 1850-71 and went to India, The Crimea, Australia and Malta (from the regimental musters). They lived and died in Hulme after that. She died 26/2/1893 of acute bronchitis. He died 7/9/1894 of nephritis. They had 3 daughters in India but only 2 survived (2 Franceses and one Sarah Ann)then Joseph Thomas born Portsea Island & Mary Jane (Halifax)`Did she marry John Walton? I have been unable to find any earlier information than that on Ann. I know she was born in Ireland but not where. How do you know about Co Longford? I would love some more information on them both. Ann also had a daughter Margaret said to have been born in Manchester c1855. She is listed as the daughter of Joseph Cuthbert on 1871 census but I wonder if she was the daughter of Mr Conroy.I have not found out any more info on her either.

Believe she married twice from daughter's birth certificate, Mary Jane Cuthbert but looking to find more on her background and when she left Ireland and where she went to.

The Catherine Blessington of my family was possibly born about 1835 in Ireland and may have died in Early, Sac. Co., Iowa. She was the daughter of John and Margaret (Reilley (spelling?)) Blessington who arrived in the port of New York on 3 June, 1839, on the ship Europe originating from Great Britain (Microfilm M 237, roll no. R 38, Passenger Lists (NNCC), National Archives (GSA), Washington DC 20408). She married Thomas Ruddy, and they had about 9 children.

Can't place any of the names you noted. Catherine Blessington (my G-Grandmaother) arrived NY on 12 Sept. on the ship Enterprise from Liverpool.She could not read nor write. Her NJ Death Cert. lists her parents as James Blessington and Catherine Conroy. She died 28 Aug. 1894 in E. Millstone, Somerset Co, NJ.

I too have Blessingtons born in Ireland in my tree, and would like to find out more about them. Whether or not they are related to your Catherine Blessington, I don't know.

I have Myles Blessington, born 1812, in Leitrim, Ireland, who was the son of Patrick Blessington and Alice Cremer. Myles had at least one sibling, a sister, Winifred Blessington, also born in Ireland.
Myles married Bridget Durkin, born 1829.

In 1851, Myles and Bridget were living as lodgers with Winifred and her husband ,Peter Curren, in Dirleton, Haddingtonshire, East Lothian.They were credited with 2 children, Mary and Alice, both born in Ireland, and said on the cencus to be "at home, Ireland"

The interesting thing here is that Miles and Bridget were then known as Mulvannerty (wrongly transcribed as McVannachtie)I gather this is an alternative Irish version of the name Blessington.

On the 1861 cencus, their name had become Blest, and they had 2 more children, born in Haddingtonshire, registered as Blest. The youngest child, John Blest, born 1855, married Margaret Dolan in 1883, and on the marriage certificate he had reverted back to the name Blessington

If any of these names mean anything to you, I would be very interested.Tracing any Irish ancestors is so difficult, and it would be great to find someone who had other branches of our tree.

Catherine Blessington was born in Ireland about 1834 and immigrated to the US in 1852. She married Henry J. Jones (also of Ireland) in Somerville, Somerset Co, NJ in 1855. She lived in Somerset County, (Franklin Twp) until her death in 1894. She had children - Mary Ann, James Edward, William, John, Henry, Joseph, and Robert.

I'd like to find out where she was born in Ireland. I'm also interested in locating any Blessington relatives.

Any leads would be great. I'm willing to share what I know.

Looking to find an Ann Blessington from Ireland. She was born about 1836

On daughter Mary Jane Cuthbert's birth certificate, who was born 1873 in Halifax West Yorkshire she was Ann Cuthbert previously Conroy formerly Blessington so believe this to be maiden name.

Her 2nd husband was James Cuthbert who was a colour sergeant in the 77th Regt.

On the census records it states born in Ireland and have tried various sites but not really sure where to start looking. Ann died in Manchester in the 1890's

I am in England and would appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction please.

Frank Dalton. I haven't checked this site until now. I was the one who met Bridget back 1999. Terry was fine with me & my friend. I am not sure how we might be related. I found relatives but the road in Ballyduffy. But I am guessing we are linked at some point. I ended up finding more about the Nixon half of the family then the Blessingtons.
