Thank you! This is exactly the family to which I am referring. Your post runs out with this sentence, "There was a Charles John Blevin of about the right age born in Ormskirk, Lancs in 1859..." do you have additional information? My grandfather, Charles Paul Blevin, Sr. was from PA but moved to Charleston, SC where my father Charles Paul Blevin, Jr. and my aunt, Esther "Diane" Blevin were born. He moved to Big Pine Key, FL with his wife, Esther Gilroy Gates, and that is where they are both buried. My father lives in Key West, FL now. I am looking for any history on them or the many brothers and sisters of my grandfather's family.

My name is Kandace (Blevin) Salter. I am searching for any information on the Blevin family that appears to have originated in Pennsylvania or Cape May, NJ. My grandfather is Charles Paul Blevin, Sr, and his father was William Blevin, also of PA. I think his father was William Blevin of England. I know that there were something like 17 siblings of my grandfather's, but the info I have now is sketchy and subject to ancient memories. If you have any info, please contact me at kksalter@gmail.com. Thanks!

www.freereg.org.uk (which indexes British vital records post 1839) shows John Charles Blevin, born Ormskirk Reg. District, June Quarter, 1859 (you will have to order the original certificate to learn more).
*
On the 1861 Census of Lancashire, twp. of Formby, a Charles John Blevin, age 1, is listed as a grandson in the household of Thomas Blevin, 49, an unemployed shoemaker. Both are shown as born in Formby, and it looks as though Charles John could be an illegitimate son of one of Thomas' daughters. This is probably not your man, however, as John C. Blevin, age 40, b. Formby, was still in Lancashire in 1901.
*
Quite possibly your family does go back to Formby, but I think you will need to sort out the confusion in the Pennsylvania records first. If you can find the marriage record, that is likely to give parents.
*
The Lancashire Parish Register Society has published the Parish Register of Formby through 1837. These are still in copyright, but can be purchased on microfiche from the Society for a small fee (see http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/lprs/fiche.shtml).
You did not mention any locations in your message - but I am guessing you are referring to the William Blevin in Philadelphia on the 1920 Census, age 31, b. England, with wife Alice H. and son Charles P., 2. The 1910 Census of Darby, Delaware Co., PA shows William F. Blevin as age 23 b. PA with wife Alice, married 1 year. At this time he was living in the household of his father William Blevin (65, b. England) and wife Sidonia (45, b. PA, married 25 years). On the 1900 Census this family is back in Philadelphia Ward 24, which shows the younger William Blevin as born Apr. 1887 in PA, but lists the parents as Charles (b. May 1860) and Sidonia (b. Nov 1865), both born in PA. Obviously, there are a lot of discrepancies here. I suggest you start by looking for the marriage of the father in Philadelphia (whether William or Charles, at least his wife had an unusual name). There was a Charles John Blevin of about the right age born in Ormskirk, Lancs in 1859...

William Blevin and Alice Spenser mar. Formby 5 June 1734. She was bur. 23 May 1753. Among their children were James (bp. 1736) and William (bp. 1744). Are these the same as James and William Blevins who were in Co. Armagh, N. Ireland by the 1780s? Would be interested if anyone knows more about this family.

I wonder if anyone out there has any info on a James M. Blevin or his family of Appanoose County, Iowa? I think he may be my ggrandfather. His wife is listed as N.J. in the 1880 census, and his children were John, Mary, William, Nellie and Charles. My grandmother, Lula, was born in July, 1883, married my grandfather, Charles Davis about 1900, and had three children. She died of TB in 1917 in Little Rock. Any help firming this connection up would be greatly appreciated.

Collette,
I can find him in the 1901 census as a Lodger in Everton,Liverpool. By this time Margaret Blevin and the kids, which are James Ellis Blevin, Ada Hope Blevin, Jane Williams, and Thomas Easton Blevin have all moved to Canada via of Home Children. I think he must of died after 1910. Margaret is buried in the Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal, Quebec. On her headstone it stated she is a widow of Richard Blevin, in 1927. Richard parents were Richard Blevin and Jane Williams. Any information you could find would be great. Thanks,Cindy

I am William Adams Hunter, cousin of the Adams family that married into the Bliven family. The one Bliven I have made contact with is Jane Bliven b. 1920. She has been very helpful.

Someone sent me a file that required a password to open. I believe it was a genealogy report on Blivens. It may have been you. But now I just don't remember and I'm not sure I have that file anymore. Does any of this ring a bell?

Hi, Barbara. I just came across your post, sort of by accident. I'm curious as to whether you had any luck. You see, my grandmother was Richard's sister. I never met him though, he died before I was born. Are you searching for information because you are a relative?

Hi Cindy,

Back again.

Having had another look at the Thomas Blevin that I found in Formby he appears to come from a different Blevin family based in that district.

Do you have Richard Blevin in 1871?

In case you don't, here are his details:-

1871 CENSUS

Address: 29 Leece Street, Liverpool.

MARGARET BLEVIN - Head - Unmarried - Age 40 - Bookseller and Stationer - b. Liverpool

ELIZABETH BLEVIN - Sister - Unmarried - Age 36 - Bookseller and Stationer - Liverpool

RICHARD BLEVIN - Brother - Unmarried - Age 21 - Printer - b. Liverpool

ANNE BLEVIN - Sister - Unmarried - Age 14 - Scholar - b. Liverpool

MARY J. HERRING - Servant - Unmarried - Age 25 - General Servant - b. Swansea, South Wales

It appears that Richard Blevin married at West Derby in September Quarter 1871 (seemingly to Margaret Noble Easton).

In the 1901 CENSUS Richard Blevin was still boarding on his own and working as a Printer Compositor, this time in Everton, Liverpool. He still describes himself as 'married'.

If you want fuller details and/or references, just let me know.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Richard

Re: Blevin

Hi Cindy,

First of all - Margaret Blevin. I cannot find her in the 1891 census. Maybe she had died by then.

I had a look at the 1881 census and note, as you said, that she was in an 'Institution' at that time with her children. No Richard Blevin there, though, and I cannot find him elsewhere in 1881.

An 'institution' is usually a workhouse where accommodation was provided in the nineteenth century for paupers or people without adequate funds to survive in the world at large and who were also without accommodation. I cannot ascertain which institution they were in as I am only able to access the extracted details and not the actual census page at the moment, but will try again later.

I have found Richard W. Blevin, though, in the 1891 census and the details of his entry are:

Address: 40 CHARLES STREET, COWLEY, OXFORD

RICHARD W. BLEVIN - Boarder - Married - Age 42 - Printer Compositor - b. Lancashire, Liverpool.

No other members of the Blevin family were with him. His landlord was George Lee Clarke, a bookbinder, who was there with his wife Louisa and their children.

It does seem to me that Richard Blevin and his wife Margaret were living apart over the 10 year period from 1881 to 1891 for whatever reason.

Do you want full details of everyone present at the Cowley address - I'll be happy to extract them for you?

Also, I believe that a Thomas Blevin was lodging (by himself) with a family in the Formby area of Liverpool in 1891 and this person may be the son of Richard and Margaret. Would you also like full details of this household too?

Regards,

Richard

Thank you so much for your reply. My son-in-law Richard, son of the deceased Richard would like to find out more about his family. He was only 4 when his dad died. I had a reply from Irvin (brother of Richard Sr.) who was going to find out more from his mother, but never heard back from him. We would appreciate any information you could share with us, and if you have any family pictures, etc. I would be very willing to pay for copying, mailing etc. My son-in-law only has 1 very small snapshot of his dad and none of grandparents.

I sent for Richard Sr. birth certificate and found that he was born in PA., name and occupation of father William, and name of mother, but that is all we have to this date.
