Re: William Bliss & 2nd Wife Mary Rockingham

Hello,

Yours is an old post and I am not sure whether you found what you are looking for.

There do seem to be a lot of linkages between the Bliss and the Rockingham families.

First 2 February 1807 Potterspury:
Thomas BLISS OTP bat & Mary ROCKINGHAM OTP spin, by banns, witnesses John JONES, John ROCKINGHAM.
I am not clear how this Thomas fits into your family, but Mary was probably the daughter of William Rockingham (b.c.1765)'s first marriage in 1787 to Sarah Hell. Following Sarah's death William remarried in 1798 to Elizabeth Woodward and this second marriage produced two more Rockinghams of relevance, William chr 23 Aug 1799 and Thomas chr 6 Sep 1801.

Dealing with William first, he married three times, to Charlotte Hall on 20th October 1822, to Christiana Kirk (widow) on 24th October 1833 and to Sarah Foster 1843Q4 Potterspury 15/745. William died 1858Q4 Potterspury 3b/18.
Of relevance to you is the second marriage - Christiana Kirk is likely to have been your Christian Bliss. There seem to have been two children from Christian's marriage to John Kirk who survived to the 1841 census - Elizabeth b.c.1822 and Christianna b.c.1825. Both are in the 1841 under the name Rockingham, though I think Christianna probably married under her maiden name GRO 1849Q4 Buckingham 6/717 to James Ridgway.

I think Christiana Bliss b.c.1798 died GRO 1842Q1 Potterspury 15/276 under the name of Christiana Rockingham.

Turning finally to Thomas b.c.1801, he married Mary Ann Sanders on 8th April 1822 at Potterspury. Thomas died young three years later and was buried at Potterspury on 3rd July 1825. I think it was Thomas's widow who married your William Bliss on 28th January 1828.

Regards
Peter

That's interesting - I've just come back from a day in Chippy, supporting the launch of their local history society book on Mill Memories! Where abouts are you? Nathaniel (astronomer royal)'s father was Nathaniel 1653 – 1721/4 of Minchinhampton Later Chalford married 1: 1677@Crudwell Susannah Cumin (d 1699)and 2. 1699 @ Cirencester. Mary Ballenger (d 1745) He was a‘clothier of good circum-stance and good repute’. Thomas (C N)'s father was Edward b 1707 Minchinhampton (Father Thomas of Minchinhampton) who married Mary Smart at Avening in 1726. They lived at Green Court in Chalford. Both families were clothiers and both had family members who were vintners (apprenticed to one another?, and Edward had a younger brother called Nathaniel) I cannnot believe that they were not related. I have too much information to post here. Anne

I believe the reason we are hitting a brick wall with William & Predua Emmins Bliss is because he was actually born in Nova Scotia rather than VT. It would make sense because a lot of Scottish immigrants (i.e. Preuda Emmins) landed in Nova Scotia. From there ino VT and down into the PA/NY border. William & Preuda would be my GG5 & GGM5. I believe we are related somehow to John & Patience Burt Bliss or a Luke Bliss (whose brother removed from CT to Nova Scotia). If you find anything new, please let me know.
Kind Regards,
Penny Bliss-Pfalzer

Hello Distant Cousin! You are related to Philip Paul Bliss, just not the famous song writer. Your grandmother Ella Louise was the daughter of this Philip Paul Bliss, who served in the Spanish American War and shows in the 1900 Census in service in the Phillipines. Actually he died in Warren, Ohio. That's why you have his picture and his letters were saved. I'm glad they didn't get tossed. He was your great-grandfather! Your line begins with Thomas Bliss and Margaret, then Nathan Bliss and Catherine Chapin, Samuel Bliss and Sarah Stebbins, Ebenezer Bliss and Sarah Colton, Ebenezer Bliss and Sarah Cooley, Nathan Bliss and Submit White, Nathan Bliss and Almyra Hitchcock, Julius Vincent Bliss and Abbie Stanton, and their children: Almira, Minnie, Elizabeth (my line), Nathan, William, Sylvester, and Philip (your ggrandfather). This is a fairly easy family to research. If you need help or questions just email me using the instructions for contact.

I went thru my book on the Zadock Bliss Lineage. (My mother found this book in an old trunk after I started looking into things last year) Zadoc Bliss was in the Revolutionary War from 1775 - 1780. James Henry Harrison Bliss was in the Union Army in the Civil War from May - Sept. 1864. I don't see a record of any other Bliss from this lineage who was in the Spanish American War - doesn't mean they weren't -just that the book I have doesn't note anyone.
All the Blisses in this book seem to have settled around in Ohio and Missouri so it seems logical that they may have been related to your Bliss linege but then again maybe not.
My grandmother was Helen Miller McCray Doll who grew up in Cowgill, Missouri. Her grandmother was Sarah Agnes Bliss, a descendent of Zadoc Bliss.

Hi there, Thanks for writing. Yes, I thought I was related to Philip Paul Bliss. But further research shows me that I am descended from the Hartford Line which is Thomas Bilss, Nathaniel Bliss, Samuel Bliss, Nathaniel (again), Pelatiah Biss, Zadock Bliss, Zadock (again), John Quincy Adams Bliss and then Sarah Agnes Bliss who was my great grandmother. Perhaps however, you and I are related way, way back? Have you researched enough to know whether the Hartford Line of Bliss(mine) and the Rhode Island Line of Bliss (yours) were related originally?
It has always been a legend in our family that we were related to Philip Paul Bliss, the hymn writer so it was quite a disappointment to find out that wasn't really the case.

Hi Thanks for your reply. My grandmother is the one that told me we were related to Philip Paul Bliss. Her brother was named after him. My grandmother was from Warren/Cleveland area of Ohio. My grandmother was Ella Louise Bliss and married Bernard Terry in 1936. Her mother was Lucilla Mckinley (Maiden name and she was related to the President Willian Mckinley) She married a Bliss who died in the war in the early 1900's. She then married a Little. They were all from the Ohio area and that is as far back as I know. There was another bliss that was in the Spanish American war. I have pictures of him but I'm not sure who he is. I also have some old letters he wrote home during the war to his family in the 1850's. I have always wanted to find out who he is. Maybe we are related in some way.

Sons of Charles & Catherine Bliss 1850's-1930's - Madison, WI (Albert G., George, Joseph B. & Charles H., Jr)

Biographical sketches from "Bishops and Bootleggers - A Biographical Guide to Resurrection Cemetery, Madison, Wisconsin": Albert G. Bliss (Sept 26, 1850 - Nov 17, 1932) was a tumbler, employed by the Barnum & Bailey Circus, one of the Forepaugh shows, and innumerable smaller circuses that crossed the U.S. and toured South America. He started in the circus at the age of 8, and performed most of his life. Despite spending many years as a circus acrobat, he was never injured. He was a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church and lived at 2305 Rowley Ave, Madison, WI.

George Bliss (Nov 24, 1854 - Dec 7, 1909) was a showman. As early as 1866 he was billed as "the only Antipodean of the age" while performing with Haight & Chambers' Colossal Circus and Equescutheatron. He lived at 201 Potter St and attended St. James Catholic Church, Madison, WI.

Joseph B. Bliss (1869 – Nov 1, 1954) was a machinist’s helper for the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad. His wife, Mary Ann Cullen (Sept 28, 1876 – Jan 28, 1953), belonged to St. Raphael’s and the Cathedral Alter Society. They lived at 602 West Shore Drive.

Charles H. Bliss, Jr (Sep 21, 1848 – Apr 6, 1926) was variously billed as the youthful Bloundin, the Champion Tumbler of the World, the most Popular and Amusing Silent-Fun-Maker and Eccentric Gymnast of modern times …. He was featured by Barnum as one of the eight greatest clowns for nine years, performing with the famed elephant Jumbo, but also with his wife, Mlle. La Vard, the “champion female Samson of America.” He lived at 602 Brittingham Blvd and attended St. Raphael’s Catholic Church.

Re: Charles BLISS, 1826 - 1906, Bavaria>Madison, WI

There is a biographical sketch in "Bishops and Bootleggers - A Biographical Guide to Resurrection Cemetery, Madison, Wisconsin": Charles H. Bliss, Sr (march 19, 1826 - July 20, 1906) and Catherine (January 25, 1827 - February 24, 1915). Bliss earned fame as the Antipodean, or Man-fly, originating the trick of walking across ceilings using suction shoes. A native of Bavaria, he, his wife, five sons and three daughters "toured the country in a rickety wagon in the days before the Civil War, part of a small caravan of performers and animals that traveled across the muddy and rocky roads of the undeveloped country to bring the rare entertainment to the pioneer settlers of 1857." The family eventually settled in Madison where several of his sons opened a grocery store. Thereafter, Charles continued to perform in circuses in the summertime, returning home each winter. Catherine, a native of Bordeaux, France, was a singer and dancer. She and Charles were members of St. Raphael's Catholic Church. The bio states they had five sons. They list Albert G., George, Joseph B., and Charles H. (Bios are available for each of the sons; no information on the daughters.)
I find I am related to Samuel Fuller, by way of marriage, who was a passenger on the Mayflower in 1620. I'm still trying to prove that connection through documents.

Bob Bliss

He emigrated from England - alone from what I can tell. He's the only Bliss on the roster. He married Alice Hudson, daughter of Joseph Byrd Hudson and Sallie Gillett. They had several children: Dale (dec.), Wilma, Bryce (dec.), Betty "June" - my grandmother (dec.), Ray, Joyce (dec.), Sandra. I am not aware of any current family in Pensacola but it's possible. I don't keep up with all of Dale, Wilma, or Bryce's decendents.

Bliss of White Pigeon, St. Joseph Co., Michigan

Searching for information relating to Weston Wilcox Bliss and his wife Sarah Roberts. They were married 1822 in Washtenaw Co., Mich. They relocated to Wite Pigeon, St. Joseph Co., Mich., directly as their children were born there beginning in 1823.

Weston Bliss was born abt 1797 in Hartford, Conn. Nothing is known of Sarah Roberts.

I have a short list of their children:
Louisa Bliss b. 1823
Weston b. 16 Feb. 1830
David Bradley b. 22 Mar. 1835
Cooley b. 22 Mar. 1835
James b. 1839
Child b. abt. 1841
Child b. abt. 1843

Although all refences of this family which I have located, state the birth of all the children in White Pigeon, none of the histories of White Pigeon or of the county of St. Joseph mention Bliss as an early pioneer.

However, both parents died there prematurely which caused all the children to be orphaned before their maturity.

I have a large history of David Bradley Bliss as he was my wife's ancestor. He set out into the world about age 14 when his mother died. David settled in several places but finally put down roots in the Hagerman Valley on the Snake River. A town sprouted up nearby and borrowed the family name. It is just off I-84 an hour's drive from Boise. This is his final resting place.

As a mature man, David Bradley Bliss returned to Michigan to look for his brothers and sisters, particularly his twin brother, but he was unsuccesful. The children were all split up and placed in the homes of friends when the second parent died in 1849.

Seldon Bliss Relation?

Any one have infor regarding this family?
I believe this is my Great Great Great Grandfathers Herbert A. (1860 Census Age 10 Bliss's or Archliss H. Bliss Age 1.) Brother according to the 1850 and 1860 Census:)
BLISS, Selden E. ,
SELDON E. BLISS, a prosperous carpenter and ex-soldier of Colfax, Clinton county, Ind., is of Scotch-Irish descent, coming from a New York family of colonial antiquity. His father, Elias BLISS, a native of the Empire state, was a carpenter and farmer, was an early settler of Ohio, and is still living, at the age of seventy-nine years; his mother died six years ago, in Ohio, a devout member of the Methodist church. Selden E. Bliss was married June 28, 1868, to Lucinda E. Baker, daughter of Daniel and Rachel (MATTIX) BAKER. Daniel BAKER came from Ohio to Indiana in the Early history of Clinton county, and entered and cleared up eighty acres of land, but lost his wife July 18, 1888: she took a deep interest in religion and died strong in the faith of the United Brethren church. To the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. BLISS were born the following children: Flora M., Charles E., Edward L. (deceased), Rachel E. and Genevieve E. Mr. Bliss has made a success in life and is the owner of a very pleasant residence and fine city lots. For over three years he did good and faithful service under his country's flag, and a brief record is here given of his military career: At the age of eighteen he enlisted for three years, November 6, 1861, in company C, Fortieth I. V. I., and saw his first battle at Shiloh; he was next in the siege of Corinth; then at Perryville , Ky.; then in the battle of Stone River; was at Waldron's Ridge and at Missionary Ridge was wounded, having a great toe shot away, and for several weeks was in the convalescent camp at Chattanooga: then joined his regiment at Tullahoma, Tenn.; was in front of Dalton and at Reseca, and was here hit by a spent ball in the left arm; fought at Kenesaw Mountain and at Peach Tree Creek and Spring Hill; back to Franklin down on the Atlanta campaign for ninety days; was with Thomas in pursuit of Hood, fighting until the latters army was scattered, and, in fact, was with the army of the Cumberland in all its marches, engagements and victories, from the time of his enlistment until his final discharge at Nashville, December 10, 1864. For all this hard service his grateful country now allows him a pension of $14 per month. Mr. Bliss is a member of Stillwell post, No. 375, G. A. R., and in politics is a republican.
p. 591 Source I
Transcribed by Chris Brown

http://www.clintoncountyindiana.org/clinton/bios/biobl.htm

Source I: A Portrait And Biographical Record of Boone and Clinton Counties, Ind., ...

I am looking for information on any relation between Redvers Buller and the Bliss family UK. The relation between the families was discussed by great grandparents and I am trying to find out whether it is feasable. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.
