BLOCH, ORVILLE EMIL - Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient WW II

BLOCH, ORVILLE EMIL

Rank and organization: First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, Company E, 338th Infantry, 85th Infantry Division. Place and date: Near Firenzuola, Italy, 22 September 1944. Entered service at: Streeter, N. Dak. Birth: Big Falls, Wis. G.O. No.: 9, 10 February 1945. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at risk of life above and beyond the call of duty. 1st Lt. Bloch undertook the task of wiping out 5 enemy machinegun nests that had held up the advance in that particular sector for 1 day. Gathering 3 volunteers from his platoon, the patrol snaked their way to a big rock, behind which a group of 3 buildings and 5 machinegun nests were located. Leaving the 3 men behind the rock, he attacked the first machinegun nest alone charging into furious automatic fire, kicking over the machinegun, and capturing the machinegun crew of 5. Pulling the pin from a grenade, he held it ready in his hand and dashed into the face of withering automatic fire toward this second enemy machinegun nest located at the corner of an adjacent building 15 yards distant. When within 20 feet of the machinegun he hurled the grenade, wounding the machinegunner, the other 2 members of the crew fleeing into a door of the house. Calling one of his volunteer group to accompany him, they advanced to the opposite end of the house, there contacting a machinegun crew of 5 running toward this house. 1st Lt Bloch and his men opened fire on the enemy crew, forcing them to abandon this machinegun and ammunition and flee into the same house. Without a moment's hesitation, 1st Lt. Bloch, unassisted, rushed through the door into a hail of small-arms fire, firing his carbine from the hip, and captured the 7 occupants, wounding 3 of them. 1st Lt. Bloch with his men then proceeded to a third house where they discovered an abandoned enemy machinegun and detected another enemy machinegun nest at the next corner of the building. The crew of 6 spotted 1st Lt. Bloch the instant he saw them. Without a moment's hesitation he dashed toward them. The enemy fired pistols wildly in his direction and vanished through a door of the house, 1st Lt. Bloch following them through the door, firing his carbine from the hip, wounding 2 of the enemy and capturing 6. Altogether 1st Lt. Bloch had single-handedly captured 19 prisoners, wounding 6 of them and eliminating a total of 5 enemy machinegun nests. His gallant and heroic actions saved his company many casualties and permitted them to continue the attack with new inspiration and vigor.

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: Seattle, Washington

Cemetery: Evergreen-Washelli Memorial Park

Born: 1915 Big Falls, WI

Died: 1983

Source, additional information and cemetery monument photo:

http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/pages_af/bloch...

Note: This is not my ancestry.
Martinus Block/Bloch/Bloks Heesch Noord Brabant Netherlands

Am resubmitting a query for Martinus Bloks (Martin Block) who emigrated with his 2nd wife, Dina Pijnenburg, 1 Apr 1881 with son, Johanna, age 3 to USA. Martin was son of Johannes Bloks (b 27 Oct 1816 in Heesch to Johannes Bloks and Annemie van Lieverious) and Johanna Beems (b 2 Aug 1820 to Jan Beems and Jacomijn van Grinsven). First wife was Johanna van den Boom (b. 5 Sep 1840 d. 23 July 1878 in Nistelrode, Noord Brabant). Martin's siblings (all born in Heesch) were: Jacobus 17 Feb 1845, Hendrickus 17 Nov 1849, Rombout 14 Dec 1851, Johanna Maria 2 Mar 1854, Jacobuis 21 Oct 1855, Jacobus 23 Jan 1857, Jacobus 2 Apr 1858, Francisca 7 May 1859. Anna Maria 25 Oct 1862, Franciscus 25 Oct 1862, Johannes 24 Oct 1864 and Johannes 14 Mar 1866. I am assuming that many children did not live long, considering the reuse of some names. Does any of this fit into your family?

I recently learned some things about my great-grandmother's family: she was born Veronika Bloch in, I believe, Krakow, Poland in 1889. Her father either died, or the marriage ended. Well, her mother Anna married Adam Zmuda. They had a daughter named Anna (b. Sep 8, 1893 in Chicago; died Nov 12, 1997 in the area) and several children. Between Adam and Anna (the mother), there were 10 children. Anna (the daughter) married Frank Zaleta. Veronika, my great-grandmother, married John Czerniak. Any information about the Bloch/Zmuda family would be appreciated. They lived in the Chicago area.

Falk on Wednesday last received the sad intelligence of the
death of his sister, Mrs. A. I. Bloch, which occurred recently at Portland,
Oregon. Mrs. Bloch had been ill for many months, and had been under the
treatment of the best physicians in the United States, but her malady proved
incurable. She was Mr. Falk's oldest sister, and a most estimable woman. Mr.
Bloch, the bereaved husband, was for many years a prominent business man of
Eastern Oregon. Mr. Falk and relatives have the sympathy of their many friends
in this city.
Does anyone have any information regarding an Elias/Elijah Bloch from Berks County, PA? His birthday was 11-12-1833, was married to Hettie Kline on 7-30-1854, died 3-12-1920. I am trying to find out who the mother was to his grandson Harvey Schmehl (my Great-grandfather). I've been told Harvey was raised by his grandparents because his mother died shortly after he was born. I will appreciate any information anyone has regarding this. Thanks in advance.
Sharon

I am looking for info on the above person's FATHER. She is my grandmother b. Jan 26, 1885 in Reynoldsville, IL. She went on to m. Lemuel Bert HAGLER b. Jan 03, 1884 in Pomona, IL. I have found some info. her mother's side of the family

The one person my family would LOVE to find is Ada's father. We have known him as William Alfred BLACK...no other info on parents or siblings. He m. Frances Emiline BUTLER, daughter of Elijah BUTLER and Elizabeth DOSS. Frances is found in TN.

The reason I am posting a message on the BLOCH board is because in the 1920 Farm Directory it list Lemuel Bert HAGLER and his wife, ADA BLOCH. http://www.iltrails.org/jackson/farmdxh.htm . I know this listing are my grandparents because I have a paper copy listing the children...which are my aunts and uncles.

Does any of this make sense to anyone?? If so, please respond. Thank you. Marla kincer@vci.net
Bloch/ Block Ger., ? Prussia ,Baden,SW,USA,Iowa,Ill. -WI

My gggrandfather was Jacob BLOCH became BLOCK in America. His 1880 Census in Richland Co. Illinois gives him, his wife and children all born in Baden,Baden ,their parents origin unknown. Baden later became part of Germany.
We know that his older son John left the family in Sch"upfen, Bern, Switzerland for the service in 1861 and they were still living in Ziegelried or Sch"upfen in 1870 when my grandfather Bendict"Ben"BLOCH was born and christened. His God-parents were Magdalena WEIBAL and Niklaus LAUPPER.
Jacob Block & wife Anne Elizabeth BURRI BLOCH, a Elizabeth , 58, Magalene , 55 (maybe sisters of Jacob? Don't know?? or where they went ) dau. Elizabeth, son's Jacob,& John, his wife Mary Margaret SHERER BLOCH, thier son Rudolph, Benedict and dau. Mary, all sailed from Liverpool to Queenstown to New York in 1872 aboard ship " Atlantic". Name given as Block, source: German to America Vol. 26. They moved first to Scott County, Iowa then to Danville, Illinois and Richland Co, Illinois by 1880, going back and forth for a few years between these places. Then settling in Richland Co. Illinois, so we believe family or friends were in these places. They were of the German Evengelical faith.
Anna Marie BLOCH/BLOCK dau. of Jacob BLOCH ( above )came over to America in
about 10 yrs before abt.1860-63 about age 19 ( need ship manifest to see who she came with (probably not alone ,but with Family). Settling in Walcott, Scott Co. Iowa .Later married in 1860 Walcott, Scott Co. to Christian Barche, from Saxon, Germany. they later moved also to Richland Co. Illinois. John's son Rudolph BLOCH/BLOCK moved to North Dakota then to Glencoe, MInnesota for 12 yrs then settled in Washburn Co. WI. and raised his family there. Family and friends in these areas ?
Very interested in Bloch/ Block's and our other surnames in these areas. Known surnames are: BLOCH/BLOCK,SCHLUNEGGER/SLUNAKER, MILLER, BURRI,SCHERER, BURGER/BERGER, & BARCHE, Email me at pkrk1@wabash.net.

He was from Hamerstein, Germany.
I am related to the Michigan Block's, some were Blok and Bloch and I have an uncle named David Carl Block. I am wondering where he got his middle name.
BLOCH; Barbara, Helene, or Helene Barbara; Austro-Hungarian Empire / CT c. 1854

BLOCH, Barbara, Helene or Helene Barbara we
know had three children from a marriage to
RING. We believe she married Arnold RING in
Austria. The three children were Leopold,
Clementine, and John Joseph RING.

We also know that Barbara immigrated to the
United States between 1885 - 1893. This
is based on John RING being born c. 1885 in
what is now Poland and Felix RING being born
in Fairfield County, CT c. 1893.

A Fairfield County, CT birth record shows
Barbara BLOCH and Adolfe KWASNY becoming
the parents of an unnamed child on 11/19/1893.
That child was later named Felix Michael.

We are also trying to locate information on
Adolfe KWASNY, who may have adopted the
surname RING. It's possible that Adolfe adopted
the surname RING because Helene Barbara,
had the three children listed above
from a previous marriage. Felix Michael also
used the surname RING his entire life.

Further information on all the above may be
found at:
http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/k/e/n/Nancy-R-Kendrick/

William Bloch of Lehigh county

I am looking for information on William A. Bloch (1877-1951) and his wife Mary E. (Romig) Bloch (1881-1919). They lived in Allentown from about 1910, but I have not been able to find any information about where they lived prior to this or who their parents were. William's father may have been named William H. or Benjamin, I've been searching church records for baptismal records. Anyone else researching this line?
