WOW, it's so great to read stories from others about Eva's Farm! The best memories of my childhood are from times spent there. I spent the first 14 summers of my life up there. We stayed across the street from Eva's at "the White Birches" - Mrs. Dias' place - right next to the Green Lantern. Mrs. Dias used to take in the overflow from Eva's - that's how busy they were. I spent many many wonderful days and nights at Eva's in the pool, rec hall, watching folks play bocci ball, visiting the animals over by the dining hall, etc. I loved the juke box in the rec hall and the soda machine - it was like a big cooler with the glass bottles hanging in rows inside. I remember bingo nights, movie nights, etc. What fun! Of course, every Friday and Saturday night we went roller skating at the rink down the road. The Schneiders still own the rink and it looks exactly the same! I used to play with Harry, Donnie & Rose's son, most summer days. I carry on the tradition and take my family up to Cairo/Purling every summer for a week and we have our annual night of roller skating. Seeing what Eva's turned into breaks my heart and my family just cannot even imagine what it was like when I try explaining it to them. The Green Lantern has been closed for years - it was a sports bar for a few years in the late 80's but that didn't last long. Shinglekill Falls has been closed to the public for the past few years now "for insurance reasons". I used to love going to the shop there and watch the kids jump off the falls. I loved the general store next to the post office where I'd get penny candy. Such fun, simple times -- I sure do miss them!
