Korte & Block Family Connection - St. Louis

In my search for the Block Family Tree in St. Louis, I have discovered an Elizabeth Block, who married a Johann Korte. They were married at St. Anthony of Padua in 1884, and I think they had 3 children. I believe that Elizabeth had a sister named Wilhelmina. I am looking for any family line -father, mother and what happened to the Korte family, if anyone knows anything. This branch of the family has become a major mystery, and I would appreciate anything!! Thanks.

Blocks buried in St. Louis

I am not a Block researcher but in the course of my search for Binghams' I discovered the following Block's buried in this large Bingham Plot #648 in Bellefountaine Cemetery - St. Louis.

George E. Block d. July 25, 1900
Effie C Block d. Oct 23, 1905
Marshall A. Block d. Aug 23, 1929
James M Block d. June 18, 1931
Beatrice A. Block d. Mar 2, 1937
James Henry Block d. July 30 1965
Grave next to James Henry reserved for
Audrey Ann Block presumed still alive.

I trace the Block ancestry here back to a Virginia Bingham b. 1837 St. Louis who married a Hymen Block St. Louis. It is mentioned that George E. Block is their son.

Neither Hymen or Virginia Bingham Block buried here ---- a mystery where they went.

Hope this may help someone - also in reading the Will of John Bingham mentioned is either an Essex Block or an Essex Block as a compnay.

My grandmother's maiden name was Anna Christina Block Fenske. Her father was John (Johann)Block and her mother was Wilhelmine Jurgens. In the U.S. they lived in the Chicago, Illinois area.
I am researching John's parents. His father was Christian Block, but I do not know his mother's name. John was born in 1849 in Germany and emigrated to the U.S. in 1867. John had several siblings and several children. Is there a descendant of John or his siblings that would know about his mother's name and vital information?

Thanks,

Christine Fenske Scallon
Simon Z. Block of Powhatan County, VA

According to Richard T. Couture's 1980 bicentennial history of Powhatan County, Virginia, Simon Z. Block was summoned to court there in November 1825 and fined for having an unlawful assembly of slaves at his tavern or “ordinary.”

Was Simon Z. Block (between 50 and 60 years old on the census of 1830) a member of the large Jewish Block (also Bloch) family with roots in Bohemia?

If so, what connection did Simon Z. Block of Powhatan County have to Simon Block Jr., who is reported to have moved from Richmond, Virginia, to Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, before 1820?

Simon Block Jr. had a son named Zalma (b. ~1811, VA).

Was Zalma Block carrying on a family tradition as keeper of the St. Charles Hotel in Cape Girardeau City?

Was Simon Z. Block of Powhatan County Simon Zalma Block?

Maurice and Mollie (nee LACOV) had four children: Fannie, Isadore, Meyer and Edgver(?) they immigrated to the U.S. in the late 19th/early 20th century and settled in Brooklyn with the Lacovs and their inlaws the BRODY family.

Any information regarding these families would be welcome. Also, Meyer Block lists his previous residence (on the passenger list) as "Schwerge" in Russia. I couldn't find any information about that place. Is it at all familiar?

David BLOCK Biography, GER<WI

From "History of Grant County, Wisconsin", 1881, p. 900.

PLATTEVILLE

DAVID BLOCK, Platteville, merchant; was born in Baden, Germany, in 1818. Came to America in 1853, and has resided in Grant Co. ever since, most of the time in Platteville. Was never married, and has been in the mercantile business since 1866. He was in the military service in Germany about three years, and participated in three battles, in one of which, in 1848, he was wounded, depriving him of the sight of one eye, and nearly depriving him of the sense of hearing.

[I am not related to this family. I'm just posting this as a service and hope it helps!]

Charles J. Block - NY/MA

Hi. I'm looking for information on Charles Joseph Block, born about 1917 in NY and died in Concord, MA in 1970. He was the son of Lillian Schaffer and Joseph Block. Lillian Schaffer is my ancestor and I am trying to connect to living descendants of Charles to share information. Charles also had a sister named "Ethel" b. abt. 1929-1930 but I do not know who she married or even if she survived to marry. My Lillian Schaffer was the daughter of Thomas Fenton Schaffer and Lillian Shaw. Charles Joseph Block is buried in my Schaffer family plot in Evergreens Cemetery in Brooklyn, although he died in Massachusetts. There is some military information on his tombstone.

Would love to hear from anyone who thinks they might connect in the hope of finding photos of my Schaffer family.

My mother's first marriage actually lasted almost eight years. She was married at home (on Corliss Street in Bath, Maine) on Thanksgiving afternoon, 1948, to James J. Cousins, Jr. Mr. Cousins worked for the J. J. Newberry Co. in Maine. The wedding announcement records that they left for Norway, Maine (where Cousins worked), following the wedding.

A handwritten annotation in my mother's scrapbook records that they lived in Norway, Maine; Brockton, Massachusetts; Haverhill, Mass., Hartford, Connecticut; Boston, Mass.; and "back to Hartford", between 1948 and 1951.

Their divorce was granted during the week ending September 29, 1956, in Hartford, on grounds of "desertion".

Stella Leonard Block (Stella McLintock), 1929 - 2003

My mother, Stella Leonard Block (m. Kenneth McLintock, August 24, 1958), was born October 29, 1929, in Jersey City, New Jersey. Her parents were Grace Leonard (1896 - 1985) and the pharmacist Henry Dietrich Block (1885 - 1934), and she had one brother, the late Frederick W. Block (1927 - 2005).

Stella graduated from high school in Bath, Maine, in June 1948.

She was married to a man named Cousins for a couple of years; they divorced some time around 1956. Currently I do not have much information on my mother's first marriage.

Her marriage to my father, Ken McLintock, lasted until his death in 2000. I was the elder of two children; my sister Stephanie was born June 2, 1964, and died at the early age of 28 in June of 1992.

My parents were married in a Unitarian church in Connecticut. They moved to the town of South Windsor, where they would live for the rest of their lives.

I will post more information as it becomes available. Anyone wishing to exchange information about Stella Block or other family members is encouraged to contact me.

I didn't know until today looking in old records she was divorced from August Block. I knew she was married twice and the last time to Paul Bohn. She died June 21, 1961 and their son Adolph Block was born July 4, 1903. Emma's parents are Mike and Juliana (Krause) Arndt. The other siblings are Adolph, August, Emil, Herman, Fred and William. William died at age 15.

Block or Black or Bloch of Russia then New Jersey

Trying to locate the Bloch family. I know that in 1930, Morris and Anna block (born in about 1880 in Russia) were living in New Jersey. Son Leon was born about 1906, just before he and Anna moved to the US. Morris was already in the US in about 1906. They had a daughter ... name unknown. Died prior to 1927. She was married to Sol (Solomon) Shain. After her death, their two young daughters (Lillian and Jeanne ... also known as "Shenke") moved back in with Morris and Anna. Sol remarried and lost contact with the girls. Looking for Lillian and Jeanne!

The Sentinel, Cheney, Spokane County, Washington, April 29, 1893

An Increase in Population
Born on Thursday, April 27, to the wife of Thomas Block, a son. Mother and babe are getting along nicely, and the excited papa is doing as well as could be expected under the circumstances. Mr. Block is telling everybody he meets that the little fellow weighs a ton and 10 pounds, but a practical test shows that the youngster falls just one ton short of the above figure.

I'm not related.
