Don't have a last name. I asked some of the older people in the faimly that knew him if the knew his parents name but so far no luck..

I am looking for information on Louisa Block. She was born
August 6, 1858 to Johann Friedrich Block and Sophie Schmidt
in Chicago, IL. I find her with the rest of the family in
the 1860 and 1870 Census but nothing after that. I also
know that the family were members of First St Paul's Lutheran Church in Chicago. What I'd like to know is if she
married, did she have any children, and did she stay in Chicago? Thanks for the help.

I can find
him in the 1860 census with the rest of the family, but
that is as far as it goes. I'd like to find out if he
went by any other name, did he marry, did he have any children, and if he stayed in Chicago or moved on? Thanks for the help.

He was one of nine
children. When the family came to the US in 1851 they
lived in Buffalo for a few years where Johann married
Sophia Schmidt. Then they came to Chicago. They were Lutherans and were members of First St Paul's Lutheran Church. What I am looking for is if he actually came over
in 1859, was he married when he came over, and where did
he settle. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm about 99% sure we have the same Emelia. Emelia was my great-grandmother. She married Henry Dietrich Ohlemeyer then had 6 children Alvina, Edwin, Frieda, Ida, Matilda & Ervin August Henry Carl.
Gustave Block

I am looking for relations of Gustave Block (1894-1991), arrived in US June 1913, from a German farming family that lived in Poland or Russia--possibly an area that had been Russia and became Poland. His parents were Peter Block – d.1913 and Charlotte (abt 1850 – 1936). Gustave owned a German deli in Brooklyn. In about 1935 Gustave, his wife Albertina Mantei, and younger son Alfred travelled to the midwest to visit Block cousins, probably in Wisconsin, but possibly in Iowa. The family they visited had a young girl named Margaret Block who wrote a book later in life. Does this connect to anyone? Thank you.
My gg (b:1881) and ggg (b:1843) grandmothers were Catherine Block family originally from Germany lived in the Barnesvile, Ohio (Malaga,or Center, Monroe Co.) area and then moved to Akron, Summit County. I'm unsure if ggg was maried to John Henry Bloch, her maiden name possibly Messmer still trying to validate and trace back the roots of John Henry Block or Bloch. Any help would be appreciated in making the appropriate connections. Great Great Grandmother Catherine supposedly gave birth out of wedlock with someone by the last name of Egger. Went on to marry a Tressle, and then a Miller before her death in 1963.

According to the obit of Henry R Weisel,(Sept 10, 1967) husband of Martha Block Weisel (m. 1901 in St Louis), dau of Frank Block, Martha B Weisel survived him. Also surviving were their daughters Martha V Hunt of Detroit, Michigan and Mrs. I Jerome Fiance of University City MO. Henry R and Martha Block Weisel had a summer home, "Snug Harbor" in Frankfurt, Michigan. Henry Weisel died there. Martha V Hunt seems to be widowed/divorced. Is this the Martha you are looking for? The Martha, dau of Frank Block, survived her husband.

I'm researching a house at 4361 Winchester Place, St. Louis. It was built in 1894 for Frank Block. The house cost $10,000. I know Frank was buried in New Mt Sinai Cemetery in St. Louis and that his wife outlived him. Do you know her name? Elizabeth Block in the cemetery seems to be about the right age. Any idea how long they lived in the house and when she sold it. I see that Martha Block married a Weisels first. Were there other children? Apparently Frank Block worked for the NY Life Insurance Co and was quite a salesman.

This may be a long shot but my grandfather was a Louis Kramer born in the early 1900/1903 and my dad just emailed me and said his someone in his family was block. I know its vague of my dad-but that's him. I know my grandfather Louis had 9 siblings 7 of whom imigrated from Lativia to Africa. The other 2 went to the states. Then, after the war one of them went back to Africa to get the others and never came back. I know your tree stated Polan but I am not sure where Lativia is as different websites say different things about where Lativia is. So much for trusting the internet. Pls email me back at lulukra1@verizon.net

Looking for information on Edward Block, born in 1849 in Lauenburg, Prussia. His wife is Anna, born in 1854. They had three boys, Paul Edward Block (born 1875),Eugene Block, (born 1877) and Otto Block (born 1879) that immigrated to Chicago, Illinois in 1880. They settled in the Jefferson Park area (northwest side of Chicago) and also had a summer home in Fox Lake, Illinois.

(Oh, BTW, Nancy, who posted this original thread, and I are cousins and have reconnected!)

There were other Block family members that immigrated and moved to San Francisco. In 1906 they were visiting Chicago and had to return home because of the earthquake as they had a business. I have found a Frederick Block during that time that was a blacksmith, but have no way to tie him to Edward.

Additional Block family members were in the St. Louis area and visits were made back and forth between Chicago/St. Louis in 1930's and 1940's. One of the family members had a daughter that married in St. Louis and came with her new husband to Chicago for a honeymoon with my great grandfather, Paul Edward Block's family around 1945/1946.

Paul Edward Block was one of 11 children and several of his siblings were married in Chicago by a Rev. Johannes Block in the 1910's. We were Lutheran as far as I know back then, but I what I thought was our "family" church in Jefferson Park was formed in 1924, so they might have attended a different church from 1890 to 1924 (perhaps where Rev. Johannes Block was at??).
I know this is a pretty old post, but I am curious if you still have a copy of the Block Book mentioned earlier, and if it would be possible to get a copy? I would happily pay for the cost of the book and shipping. My Great Great Great grandfather was Friedrich C. Klinger Block (1828-1904). His parents were John Ferdinand and Augusta Block. John died and Augusta remarried his brother, William Block (1812-1901). I have William immigrating in 1857 but have no idea if that is accurate. This sounds like the same family. I was always told that the Block family was wealthy and at some point, 3 block sisters, married 3 Kuhlmann brothers (Kuhlmann is my maiden name). This would be descendents of Friedrich C. K. Block.

My grandfather's grandfather, Solomon Block, born 1850 in Lithuania, had eight children. He first moved to Johnstown in 1882 but eventually started several businesses, including a bakery in Altoona. He later moved to Philadelphia. The eight children were Dave, Joseph, Samuel, Sadie, Harry, Alfred, Louis, and Lillian. Perhaps some stayed in Altoona? My family is through Harry.

No other Blocks came from Lithuania that were relatives as far as I know. I think I have seen your family on Ancestry though because I remember looking at a Solomon from Lithuania at some point. Thanks again.

Andrew

Hello Pam,
That would be great. I am trying to find some information on Louis Block. He was married to a Helen Block from Poland. They had two children named Gary and George, both of whom passed away due to heart conditions in their 40s. George had no children and was never married. Helen passed away sometime in the 80s. Louis died following the 5th heart transplant operation performed in the world. He lived from 1909 to 1968. He was a retired fireman. I believe that the family was eastern european in origin, but am having trouble finding any information beyond Louis Block. A newspaper article says that he was born in Brooklyn, but moved to the Bronx. Louis Block's parents, according to a census document, appears to be Abe and Mollie Block from Romania. According to the same document he appears to have several siblings, though I do not know if this is regarding the same Louis Block. The sibling names are: Bessie, Jennie, Jacob, Henry, Ike, Baidore, Lillie, and Leo. Any information you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated! :)
