Re: William, Matthew, Lorraine Blocker - South Carolina

Howell Murray Blocker (10 AUG 1903 - 10 Aug 1970) was the son of Albert Sifley Blocker (1876 - 1932) and his wife Janie Louella Adams.

Albert's father was John M. Blocker (1834 - 1902) and his wife Margaret Mathilda Bunton.

John M.'s father was John Blocker and wife Mary Varn. Not much is known about John and Mary Blocker. They appeared on the 1850 Colleton Census (possibly was one of the earlier Johns in Colleton). This line is one of the oldest and largest Blocker lines in Colleton County.

I did not locate siblings William, Mathew, and Lorraine Blocker in this line.

I have an extensive database of Colleton Blockers and would be happy to check on other info for you.
Hi kwlloyd. Thanks for this info - I'll update my database accordingly and especially the photos. I do not have many Blocker photos. One question - are the attached individual photos of Peter and Gertrude Blocker or of their daughter Kate and her husband William McMullen? Your response was a little confusing to me and I just want to make sure I place the photos with the correct individuals. If they are of Peter and Gertrude who immigrated from Holland, can I ask where you got them from? You can reply offline to rsjoer@gmail.com Thanks!

I am trying to find information on Hugh D Blocker that is listed as the father of Anita Linda Blocker, born on July 20, 1948 in St. Paul, Ramsey County, MN. The mother was Betty L. Gold, born c. 1922 to Jennie and Sidney D Gold. I have not been able to find any information on Hugh or Anita other than the birth record. Do you happen to have any information at all. Thank you very much!

Carolyn Blocker

They lived in and around Colleton County, South Carolina.

Miriah Lindsey married Marion Doyle, South Carolina.
Hello Anne,
I've been researching my Blockers off and on for about 5 years. I don't think we've corresponded before, and today I had a few moments and found your message on the board here.
I would love to correspond more since you appear to be from TX, too.
My grandmother, Julia Belle Blocker was born near Tarkington Prairie
(Liberty County, TX) where her mother's family, the Boothes had been since Republic of TX days. Her Blocker father was Franklin Michael Blocker, son of George W. Blocker. Her father went by Mike. We know he and his mother/family came to Libery Co around mid 1870s as George and wife had divorced after 1870.
It seems that things are pretty well researched/documented back to civil war times, but after that, it's still kind of confusing to me. From what I've read, Michael L. Blocker was George's father and was probably born in South Carolina (or North Carolina depending on who I've read). Michael served in war of 1812 and got land in Feliciana Parish, LA, but also in Mississippi settling in Copiah/Leake County areas (we've found the cemetery and have photos).
Jann Cunningham wrote books about the Blockers and has quite a bit on Michael L and I believe his brother William. I think she feels their father was a William. Could you email me with your relationship to these Blockers?
Thank you... tkwelch@yahoo.com

BLOCKERS OF COVINGTON CO AL

I've been trying to track down all the children of Mary Ann Catherine Taylor and John Olin Blocker, both of whom were born and died in Covington Co. AL.

The couple shows up in 1870 Covington Co. census, and later the family shows up in 1880 and 1910. Both Mary and John Blocker died in 1818 and are buried in Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery in the county. According to the 1910 census, the couple had 8 children. I can find traces of William Washington, John Abrams Randolph, Marion Jasper Ezekiah "Ezra", and a daughter named Iola, but little else.

Any information on this family will be appreciated, but I am especially looking for their 1900 census listing.

Thanks!
Steve Stone
Grand Bay AL

I have seen applications to the Dawes roll from where Perry and Amanda Wallace both applied (they were John Mclellan's siblings). I have copies of letters saying that John M. Blocker, Jr. was the grandson of JY Blocker His father told us many stories of the family from the Potsdam Grenadiers to the death of Frederic of Prussia, to a Swiss ship to Blockerville, North Carolina, to the storm, to Edgefield, South Carolina, The Blocker Academy, the War of 1812 (where they met up with Tennessee relatives, the descendants of Capt. Moses Guest) and how the men marched down the Pearl River Valley to New Orleans and after how they moved from the mountains to the coast and then inland to Copiah, Leake and Kosciusko, Mississippi and on to Texas. My aunt, Ruth Cooper, kept the family records. I have stories and warm memories. There are two George Washington Blockers, one the brother of my great-great grandfather, CW, and the other his son. CW and GW were sons of Michael who moved with the Bucholtz family to Feliciana Parish. I have the plot of the land in my notes which do not always agree with Jann Cunningham's accounts. Let me know if you have specific questions about our branch. There is a Truman Graves Blocker III and a IV, but his son is Jack and Jack has about 20 first cousins of the Blocker Clan in Dallas. We are related to the Blockers of Brazil, Tunisia, Missouri and Colorado. Here is the link to Potsdam:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potsdam_Grenadiers

Anne/Galveston Island

Truman Graves Blocker, Sr. of Leake County, Mississippi was born in 1879. He was my grandfather. He married Mary Ann Johnson of Calfkiller, White County, Tennessee, born in 1885, in 1908. The Johnson Bible Church where they married has been in regular operation since 1815 when it was founded by the Johnsons of North Carolina. There is a family cemetery next to the church where many ancestors are buried. When I visited the church ten years ago, no one there knew who the people in the cemetery were or knew any of their stories.

Truman and Mary Ann's two children, Truman, Jr. and Ruth, have 46 direct descendants. I could not get to the previous message to discover this thread or even where it is posted.

Anne Blocker
Galveston Island

My great grandfather was Joseph Younger Blocker. His uncle was James Younger Blocker and the story from my grandfather was that both J.Y. Blocker's (as they were known) were named for the neighbors, the Youngers, in Mississippi who were related to the Younger Gang of Missouri. I am not sure how. They were SC Blockers who came to West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana after the Battle of New Orleans then migrated with family up the Pearl River Valley to Leake and Attala Counties in Mississippi.

The tradition of naming the children for the neighbors began in SC to protect the family.

Anne Blocker
Galveston Island
