I am Merrit Bloomquists granddaughter. His brother Marvin has done extensive genealogy research and we could probably help fill in details. How fun to find family heritage!

In the MHS birth records it shows: Flint, Rudolph Leroy, born 03 of May, 1928, mothers maiden name, Bloomquist. certificate # 1928-13155. Census records are full of mistakes and tho there are Spangruds in the MHS records, none show a Rudolph. I'll e-mail you a link to the records if you want. Butch

The Swedish records are very detailed and go a long way back

I found a Carl Oskar that MAY be a match. Let me know if you find more details for your Carl Oskar

From the Swedish emigration DVD

Karl Oskar Blomqvist, b. 31 JUL 1884 in Flisby, Jönköpings län, Småland.
THANK YOU so much! This really surprised me. This seems to all match what I am looking for and I appreciate you forwarding this to me. I've met Anna, Elin and Martha Guftason as they are my great aunts. I will put this information to very good use and see if I can come up with more on my dads' family. I was thinking that maybe records were lost or not even recorded and wondering how to go about moving forward. Thanks again and have a great day.....Don

Hi

I think you may be right.

I found the following on the online Swedish church books arkiv http://www.arkivdigital.net/
Gävle Heliga Trefaldighet CI:23 (1884-1888) Bild 355 / sid 324 (AID: v134987.b355.s324, NAD: SE/HLA/1010056) See image for his birth records.

There is no mention about Blomquist there but there is on the "Swedish population 1890"

Anders Petter Johannesson Blomqvist, b. 1857 in Grava, Värmlands län, Värmland.
Maria Lovisa Hedvig Lundin, b. 1862 in Örebro, Örebro län, Närke

Their children
Frits Gustaf, b. 1888 in Gävle, Gävleborgs län, Gästrikland
Frida Matilda, b. 1889 in Gävle, Gävleborgs län, Gästrikland
-------------
From the DVD "Swedish population 1900"
Blomqvist is removed again but its probably just an error

Anders Petter Johannesson, b. 1857 in Grava, Värmlands län, Värmland.
Maria Lovisa Hedvig Lundin, b. 1862 in Örebro, Örebro län, Närke

Their children
Frits Gustaf, b. 1888 in Gävle, Gävleborgs län, Gästrikland
Frida Matilda, b. 1889 in Gävle, Gävleborgs län, Gästrikland
Ferdinand Robert, 1894 in Gävle, Gävleborgs län, Gästrikland
Petrus Florentin, b. 1899 in Gävle, Gävleborgs län, Gästrikland
-------------
I found the following on the DVD "Swedish death index 1901-2009"

Frida Matilda Blomqvist (married name Karlsson), b. 2 AUG 1889 in Gävle, Gävleborgs län, Gästrikland. Died 13 OCT 1950 in Rostock 1/9, Gävle Staffan, Gävleborgs län, Gästrikland. Married 15 SEP 1945. This was her second marriage, her first husbands last name was Ståhlberg.

Ferdinand Robert Blomqvist, 16 MAY 1894 in Gävle, Gävleborgs län, Gästrikland. Died 22 AUG 1963 in Slaktarn 4/8 Gävle Staffan, Gävleborgs län, Gästrikland. Married 18 OCT 1924.

I couldn't find Frits/Fritz or Petrus Florentin on the death index DVD, and I couldn't find them on the EMIBAS emigration DVD either. So they may have passed away in Sweden or emigrated. It would be worth looking for Petrus in the US as well

Anna
I am not related to this family

My greatgrandfather emigrated to America in 1910 as "Fritz Blomquist." He stated he was from Gefle on the ship's papers, his WW1 and WW2 draft cards. His date of birth was 8 February 1888. His US death certificate stated his parents were "Anders Blomquist" and "Louisa Ehricson". His emigration papers (1910) stated his mother was "Maria Blomquist."

Using the Sweden, Indexed Birth Records, 1880-1920 for Gavle (Gefle) I found a Fritz Gustaf born on 8 February 1888. The parents listed were "Anders Petter Johansson" and "Maria Lovisa Hedvig Lundin."

Coincidence or have I found the link to when my Swedish family adopted the Blomquist surname?

I am trying to find some information about my Grandmother who came to United States and married my Grandfather Carl Oscar Blomquist. They made their home in Denver, CO and two weeks after she gave birth to my dad, Clifford Carl Blomquist, she died and my grandfather raised the two boys by himself. I am working with vital records, census and immigration BUT I really don't have any past to do a good match for my Grandmother. Anybody out there that may have a connection that could help me find her past and her family would be greatly appreciated.....

Glad you were able to order her death certificate. Obituaries can be a treasure trove of information as well!
Always try and start with what you know and work backwards. Birth, marriage and death certificates are invaluable genealogical resources. In my research I have found that the "informant" cited on those certificates may have been misinformed in some cases, but it is still a fine place to start!
Perhaps Martha's children are still alive and living in Sweden??? Your second cousins!
Google "Bridge to Sweden" and have a look at her website. Very valuable information there! There are also websites in
Swedish if you know anyone who speaks the language.
Let me know if I can offer any further guidance?
Happy Hunting!!!
Robin

Thanks for the Info! I appreciate it. I just ordered a copy of my Grandmothers' death certificate and looking to get a Library card for the Denver Library to search archives and Denver Newspapers for information. If i can just get one shred of *anything* to go on, I should be floating the Blomquist Boat pretty soon. Strange thing, People from the *old* country packed a lot of emotional, mental baggage when they came over here and continued to live their lives that way here as well.

If I were you, I'd go after your Your father's birth certificate. It is probably your best bet for his parents' birth places.
You could also get grandmother's death certificate from the 1920's. If she died in Minnesota you should be able to just write or call the state Vital Statistics office. Her husband (your grandfather) may have given his own place of birth on her death certificate. He would have certainly given hers if he knew it.
If you get get your own parent's marriage certificate your father may have(probably did) give both his parents' names and places of birth.
Smaland is a rather big place and you need to try and find some specifics in the records I referred you to! Once you can pin down a specific townland in Sweden...
GOOD LUCK!
Robin

My grandfather Carl Oscar was born in Smoland, Sweden as well as my grandmother Thresia Caroline Askling. Don't have a lot of info because my grandfather nor my dad or uncle talked about it. My Grandmother came to the states leaving her daughter Martha with family planning to bring her here once she was settled but she passed away two weeks after giving birth to my dad in Jan. 1920. Martha remained with her aunt in Sweden. I did have relatives in Milaca, Minn. but they are all gone by now. That's about all I have right now. I am still digging around trying to figure out a path.

I have both a Carl and an Oscar Blomquist in my tree. They were brothers but I have little information on my Carl. Where did your grandfather live when he came to the United States? If you can locate his death certificate the "informant" on this document may have documented where in Sweden he was born. Also, you can may be able to learn his parents' names which is very helpful.
When my Swedish grandfather's mother, Anna Blomquist, passed in late 1920's my grandfather gave both these bits of information on her death certificate which were very critical in locating her parents. Once you can pinpoint the homeland in Sweden you can usually go much further back! The Swedes were great record keepers! The parish priests were required to keep track of all their parishoners even after they emigrated.
There are several online sources for and about Swedish immigrants.
Let me know if you have more information about your grandfather. Perhaps I can point you in the right direction?
robin

My paternal Grandfather Carl Oscar immigrated to USA in the early 1900s' and I think he was married to Thersia Carolyn Askling of Smaland. She had a daughter name Martha but remained in Sweden raised by her aunt. I have very little to go on as my grandfather never talked about his family that he left behind. I knew that he had several sibling but I'm sure they are no longer alive.

My Great Great Grandfather was Nils Blomqvist. He was born in Sweden and married a Norwegian girl by the name of Gertrude Jacobson on October 6, 1872 near Mo-i-Rana Norway. They lived in Nesna Norway until sailing to America in 1903. The settled in Woodville Wisconsin. I am trying to find their decendants here in America and would enjoy learning about the area where he was born and discovering relatives in Sweden if at all possible. Thank you.

Blomquist, 1861-1941, married to Caroline, 1871-1904. They ended up in Land O' Lakes, WI. My grandma was Clara Elizabeth Harris-Blomquist, from Oslo, Norway.
In the 1930 Census my husband's grandmother is listed as living in Pelan Minn with her father, mother, sister, and son. The child is Rudolph Spangrud although Elsie's last name was still Blomquist. We have always thought that Rudolph's last name as Flint until we started doing his family history. Now we are trying to figure out who the Spangrud is that is the father of Rudolph. None of the family (that we know) is still alive.
My mother's father was Albin Bloomquist. He had added the extra "o" to aid in pronunciation. He died January 10, 1982. He had a total of seven children.

Those born in Sweden were born in the village of Hällekis, just east of Lidköping, Sweden. (Google map Hällekis, Götene, Västra Götaland, Sweden)

I still have contact to the Swedish relatives, descendents of Emma Larson's sister who remained in Sweden.

Gilbert Blomquist died in late 1985 or spring 1986.
The Swedish relatives still remember how Gilbert would visit them unexpectedly and leave unexpectedly. He did the same thing at Albin's house in Minnesota.

_____________________

Albin was first married to Marie ________, with children Gordon Blomquist (still living in Montana) and Alice Blomquist Garrett (deceased fall 2005).

Albin married my grandmother, Amy Adeline Peterson April 14, 1926. Her parents as listed in my last posting and most of her siblings went to Canada. I have a letter somewhere that Helga sent her sister Anna in their later lives.
Blomquist Research In Nebraska

I have been interested in finding out more about Alice Blomquist, who was the daughter of John P. Blomquist and Marie/Mary A. Blomquist. She is buried in the Farnam cemetery in an unmarked grave and someone who knew of her is interested in placing her data on the headstone of her mother, Mary, who died in 1917. This headstone can be seen at
www.nebraskagravestones.org in Frontier county, Farnam cemetery.

I do not know how Nels P. Blomquist is related to John P. Blomquist but feel there must be a connection and thought that a researcher of 'Blomquist' in Nebraska might have the information.

A number of settlers came to this area from the North Loup/Scotia area. Many of them where Seventh Day Baptists. Some of their descendants still live in the area. Some names that I recall are: Hurley, Van Horn, Clement.

Thank you,
Nebraska Betty

Visit my hometown at: http://www.farnamnebraska.us

and http://www.historicfarnam.us

I have just returned from Sweden on 7/10/2004 and found the following information listed in the Archives at Uppsala.I have added an attachment which includes a copy of the first page of the record. I believe the names were crossed out when the family left the area in 1907. Please forward any information about these family members.

Dear Thomas Lund,

I saw your message concerning Anders Blomquist (or Blomqvist). My Great-Great Grandfathers name was Anders Gustaf Blomquist. He came to the United States in July of 1882. He lived most of his life in the state of Nebraska. At his grave it states he was born May 14, 1828. On the ship manifest there was another Blomquist family. The head was J. Blomquist. At the site of Anders grave is another grave with a J. J. Blomquist. He was born December 12, 1838 and Maria 1882. I belive this is Anders brother John J.

Anders came to the US with his family. I believe his wife's name was Anna. I'm sure his childern's names and birth years where. Emma Christina 1860, Eliza 1862, Fred 1866 (I'm certain of this spelling),

They started arriving about 1900. Gilbert apparently came first or possibly with Albin. I know that Albin lived in Minnesota but dont know if that was his first stop, and that Anna Emerentia ended up in So Dakota-endentured she came with her brother Carl Gustav. I dont even know the port of arrival of these family members The parents apprently arrived with the rest of the children, I am not sure where but ended up in Montana and then up to Sach Canada by 1909. Albin Had many children, lived in Minnesota, Idaho and Montana, he had either 2-3 wives. The rest of the brothers from what I can determine never married or had children and died in Sash Canada. Helga Married in Canada and died there. Marie Mary Married a Dunkelberger in Montana and died there. Anna Emerentia married Anders Erickson in So Dakota (our line).
Any help or leads would be greatfully appreciated.
