I have a Sarah E. Butler the daughter of Nathaniel "Nathan" Butler and wife Sarah F. Nolen

Sarah E.Butler was born 1888 and she married John P. Bloomfield. They had seven children.
Bertha
Dorothy
Edgar
George
Lily
Lona
Jane
I'm afraid that is all I do have on this entire family , My line is Butler. I do however have a Bloomfield Line, but haven't been able to tie John or son Edgar into it!
This Butler Line is from Lewis county Kentucky, as is my Bloomfield line. If you make a connection, let me know..If you can tie Edgar to John Bloomfield I can offer a ton of information on the Butler side!
Carolyn

I think you are after Harry Bloomfield who was born, according to my records, on 5 May 1864 and who married Elizabeth Q2 1891. Harry was the son of Joseph Bloomfield (b c 1829 in Norton) and Ellen Bray(b c 1847 in Pakenham) who married Q4 1851. Joseph's parents were Michael Bloomfield (b c 1798 in Norton) and Mary Fayers (b c 1800). Michael's parents were William Bloomfield (c 1764-c 1841) and Susanna King (c1768-c1817). William's parents were William (b c 1726) and Elizabeth Barnes who married in 1753. It is believed William's parents were perhaps a John Bloomfield (c1689-c1763) and Anne?
Different researchers have slightly different dates for some of the above and most of the information has been passed from person to person so it is not my research and I cannot absolutely confirm it is 100% accurate but several sources seem to have much the same details.
Please get in touch if you wish as I have a lot more and would also like to add details of your line to my portfolio.

Wow! What a story! I'm so glad you replied. I have been researching Minna Gale off & on for the past 14 years because her career is closely tied to Lawrence Barrett's & Edwin's Booth's late careers. She was Barrett's protegee & after his death, seemed intent on keeping his repertory in her own as a touring star (a semi-successful venture, at best). She does turn up frequently in the papers, but it's usually a simple mention with no real detail about her acting. Understandable, since Barrett & Booth were the focus of attention. Reviews of her solo tours naturally have more to say & critics were divided. Those who didn't like Barrett weren't inclined to like her, but others adored her.

The sudden appearance of Dorothy in Minna's household did throw me for a loop & had me imagining all kinds of scenarios. Dorothy is not mentioned in Archibald Haynes' obit in 1912, so perhaps she was adopted by Minna alone after her husband's death. At first I thought Dorothy might have been Minna's natural child, but was given up for financial reasons when Archibald was bankrupted after the insurance scandal he was involved in in 1905.

Last year I was contacted by a woman who said she was descended from Minna's illegitimate daughter Elizabeth, born in Feb 1888 (apparently after a performance, because the papers mention her as performing that night). She sent me a scan of a 1910s letter from Elizabeth's guardian verifying it, but the scan was quite inferior & no follow up emails were answered. However, I was able to transcribe enough of it & there were details like the names of Minna's parents & brother. Elizabeth married a David Joseph Martelle of Swanton, VT & they lived in Harrietstown, NY in 1920 & then Saranac Lake in 1930.

I definitely would like to share what I have of Minna, if it interests you. Let me know what specifically (family history, photographs, etc). If you prefer private email (I do!): renosgrrl@yahoo.com

Re: James Myers Bloomfield and two wives

Yes- I know the entire story. James was first married to Martha Studley Oliver. He owned a jewelery shop, in Brooklyn, with the son of her father; she stepped out with that son, and James found out and there was a very nasty divorce. Big news article about it- her parents were for him. YOu can find it in the times if you write in James Myers Bloomfield. There are a few articles.

I am not sure if any of the four children come from her, but he next married Ann Lawtey. The four children are Marion Louise, Helen Lefferts, James Myers Jr, and Dorothy Colton. Ann died at the birth of the last child. They had gone up to Vermont to live, after the divorce, but I don't know how long they were there. I think it is on the 1900 census that you find them there but I believe they were back in NYC not long afterwards.

He felt unable to take care of them and gave them all up to foster care, although Dorothy was adopted by Archibald Cushman Haynes and Minna Gale. She was then known by their last name.

After that James married Elizabeth Thompson, and a year later he was murdered on the steps of his jewelry store. Someone mysteriosly wrote me and told me who did it, but she is out of town and I am waiting to find out more.

I don't know how minor Minna Gale was as I saw tons of articles about her in the NYTimes. So many so, that I emailed them all to myself rather than printing them out.

She married Phillip Vollmer, one of Carl's brothers. Carl and Eva lived in Old Greenwich, Conn. for a while and Phillip and Dorothy lived in nearby Greenwich, so there was obvious interaction.

My grandmother may have known her in NYC, as she was the first American girl to be the premiere danseuese at the Met. I am in the process of co-authoring a book about her and have been researching and writing for 9 years.

I havn't worked on their family in awhile, but I do remember seeing one of the children in an orphanage. My cousin told me the basic story about the foster care and had some names of who the other children went to, but I was never able to find them anywhere.

Ann Lawtey is the daughter of William Lawtey and Elizabeth, and James is the son of Jonathan C. Bloomfield and Sarah Lefferts Redfield. His parents are John Wood Bloomfield and Amanda Colton, and hers are John Redfield and Sarah Lefferts Shenk. Sarah's parents are Pieter Tuines Shenk and Sarah Lefferts. Sarah Lefferts parents are John Lefferts and Ailtge______ Vanderbilt.

The Leffert family is connected with the Leffert Historical House in Brooklyn, which is on the internet. Lovely looking and I want to go see it.

James and some of the Lefferts are buried in The Green-Wood Cememtery, only his middle initial is A instead of M. There is no obit for him that I can find and the whole thing smells very fishy. I am not sure if the Bloomfields were Jewish or Dutch. The Dutch were involved with diamonds, and that may be why the jewelry store. Bloomfield seems to be an English name, but it could be an Americanized spelling of a Dutch name.

I am interested in anything you can find out about Minna Gale. I havn't read the articles, but I am writing and researching like mad at the moment as my due date is the end of the year and it is very close. I need to get to NYC one more time.
Any thing else you need to know- feel free to ask. Sue

Hi--

I saw this post & was hoping you might have some information about the mentioned Dorothy, who married the brother of your grandfather, Carl Vollmer.

I found a record of Dorothy's christening on familysearch.org. Two records, actually. One has James Bloomfield & Ann Lawtey as parents, the other has Archibald Haynes & Minna Gale. I'm researching Minna Gale, who was a minor star on the stage in the late 1800s & drifted in & out of retirement.

Do you know who were her actual parents? There is a Dorothy C. Haynes listed as an orphan in 1910 at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Manhattan, but by 1920 a Dorothy C. Haynes of the same age is living with Minna Gale & her mother. This same Dorothy is who married Phillip Vollmer, as Minna Gale-Haynes is listed as the bride's mother in the wedding notice. I'd love any help in clearing up this mystery!

You have the wrong date, as in 1900 he was living in Vermont, married, and he was buried in GW around Aug 6 1905 with others of his family, including the Lefferts.

Im researching the Bloomfield side of my family. I have asked my nana for information but was wondering if anyone out there could help me fill in some blanks.

We're missing the name of the husband to Elizabeth Bloomfield nee Pleasents. They had 6 children, Sidney, Wiliam (willie), Robert, Jessie, Alice and my nanas mother Maggie bloomfield who married Samuel Harry Stevenson Ling in 1919. Unfortunatly all we know is his last name was Bloomfield and nothing else as is said he died quite young.

Elizbeth Bloomfield later married Will Bradbrook.

It is almost certain they lived in North Suffolk, but again it is not known where.

If you can help please message me.

:)

How Odd, I was just thinking about that family today, as I hve been working on something else for a long time. How do you happen to know about this and do you know anything of the situation? For example, was it a store robbery, or was he involved with some criminal group, or what was the situation?
Looking for information on my father Thomas Hargen (or Hagen) Bloomfield, whose parents were supposedly Samuel Bloomfield from England and Elizabeth McLaughlin from Ireland. Could have been born in Missouri in 1896, 1898 or 1900. No Census information except for 1940 showing Thomas with my mother Amy as being married & living in Jacksonville, FL. No information on any siblings. Can't find birth certificate. Any knowledge re: the above names would be greatly appreciated.

I am the greatgreat grand daughter of Paul Samuel Bloomfield that moved to Tonga and married a Tongan woman, Sela Mounga. The only James that I know of in the family tree would have been one of Paul Samuel Bloomfields sons named James Bloomfield. Paul Samuel Bloomfield didn't have a brother named James. Elijah and Sofia Bloomfield only had 2 sons, Paul Samuel and John Bloomfield. Elijah and Sofia had a daughter named Mary which is Mele in Tongan. Paul Samuel Bloomfield only had 1 daughter with Sela. Her name is Henrietta or Eta for short.

Hopefully this helped a little.
Dear Meltameifuna,

Yes you are correct Melenaite. My Great Grandmother Mele was the daughter Vali Vuni sent to NZ. My GG must have known your Great Grandmother and her siblings, her half sisters well, because she called one of her daughters Pelesila after your Great Aunt.

I am trying to trace the family of my GG Melenatie Amalani born 1898(she was not known as Melenaite Bloomfield until she left Tonga) I would say that was in respect of your family. I do know that her mother was called Seluvaia Fusilautama or Melefusi Tui'pulotu. her mother was born in 1869 approx. (Amalani must be a grandparents name??)

If you prefer my email is serenitybloomfield@yahoo.com.au
you may choose to use this rather than discuss on the open forum, as some of the things discussed are sensitive family things.

Again with respect and gratitude I thankyou
Serenity Bloomfield
