Emily Blount elopes with imposter, Mobile, AL 1858

From the Mobile, Alabama Newspaper, July 1858

From 1858:

"A correspondent, who has carefully looked over the French Army Register for 1855, writes to the Philadelphia Press, that there is no such name as de Riviere to be found in it. This certainly looks like a forlorn hope for the future prospects of the brilliant and fascinating Zouave."

Harnett Kane detailed the story in his book, "Gentlemen, Swords and Pistols."

Capt. de Riviere had presented himself earlier in 1858 as a French noble and military hero of the Crimean War. His adventures included a duel with one gentleman in New Orleans, and another in Mobile with Harry Maury, who shot him through the cheek. De Riviere recuperated in the Blount home, romancing Miss Emily Blount (and perhaps her mamma as well), then took his leave of the city, leaving behind considerable debt, as well, and taking Miss Emily along with him, with Colonel Blount, the papa, in hot pursuit.

Not my line, just sharing.
i am descendant of walter 'pomp' blount who was the son of a white man and his house slave rosa or rosie. walter had a sister named amanda blount who married an alferd matlock. walter blount was married twice. once to ida blount who died in 1900 and then to lizzie blount. out of the union of walter and ida blount was borm rosie or rosa blount who was my great grandmother. rosie blount married isaiah randall and they had 15 children together.

as far as i can tell the blounts remained in shelby county texas until death. eventually rosie and isiah randall moved to san francisco california either in the 1930's or 1940's.

does any of this ring a bell with anyone? i am mainly trying to find information on walter blount's white father. our family has always referred to him as 'old man' blount but i would like a name and location if anyone knows anything.

thanks

blounts in Thomaston Georgia.

Hi this is my first time on this site so I'm a little green.

My father was adopted by his step-father back when he was 4. A few years back we met the sister of my father's biological father. My father is from Thomaston, Georgia and I believe the majority of his relatives are either in Thomaston or Talboton, Georgia.

My dad's biological father is named Jerry Allen Blount Sr. Jerry was briefly married to my grandmother Anne Elizabeth Herndon who later remarried to a man named Robert Everett Reeves. All of them are from Thomaston. My dad was Jerry Blount Jr. before being adopted. Jerry Sr. had an older brother named Ray Blount Jr. and a younger sister named Carole Ann Blount Franklin. Carole Ann had 4 children but I can only remember two of their names Andy Franklin and Rhonda Franklin from when we met several years ago (it's an odd story I won't repeat). I know Jerry's parents were named Ray Blount and Susie Wagner Blount (my great-grandparents). I have met someone claiming to be the son of Ray's brother Roy Blount nicknamed JT Blount but I found a page online that said Roy Sr. had two children a Roy Jr. and a Jeanette. It also said Ray and Roy's father is coincidently named John Thomas (JT) Blount.

I am very interested in knowing everything there is to know about Ray Sr. and his brother Roy Sr. and their descendants.

My parents and I would like to track down JT Blount again if possible.

Ruben J. Blount

"Ruben J. Blount was born in Georgia and came to Arkansas in 1811, according to his obituary. However, Capt. Jack M. Greathouse of Fayetteville, a descendant of Ruben's brother Wiley, says that the two Blount brothers came to Arkansas from Tennessee about 1820. His name first appears in the deed records as a witness to a deed from Francis Imbeau to William Russell, executed on May 27, 1816 in the Cadron Settlement. There is no evidence that either of the Blounts claimed 1814 pre-emptions here.
Ruben Blount was only sixteen years old in 1811. In his later life it was obvious that he had a much better education than was available on the AR frontier. He is said to have been a lawyer, and was prominent in political affairs. He was one of the early owners of a part of the pre-emption certificate of William Lewis, which covered the site of Little Rock.
His first wife was Lidda (Lydia) McFarland, dau. of Alexander McFarland. She died in Conway Co. on 6 May 1836 at tha age of 38. In 1840 he lived in Point Remove twp. Ruben J. Blount died at his home ten miles west of Lewisburg, on 20 Feb. 1841. He had remarried and was survived by his wife and several children." From: Pulaski Co. Historical Review, Vol. IV, No. 4, Little Rock, Dec. 1956 by Margaret Smith Ross.

The Lost Colony DNA Project & Symposium

From the Administrator of the Project:

Is your family part of the Roanoke Lost Colony? It could be! My name is Roberta Estes and I’m the Director for DNA Research for the Lost Colony Center for Science and Research. (www.lost-colony.com) Our goal is to discover the fate of the Roanoke Lost Colonists.

For those of you who don’t know about the mystery of the Lost Colony, here’s a primer. In 1587, Sir Walter Raleigh financed a venture in which 116 men, women and children were planning to establish the first permanent colony in the New World. Their goal was to raise tobacco and other supplies that colonists were unable to obtain in England, and to search for precious minerals, like gold.

In the fall of 1587, the colonists finally arrived on Roanoke Island in present day North Carolina, after a very difficult journey in which their food supplies were ruined. They sent John White, whom they had elected governor, back to England to obtain food and supplies and expected his return in the spring of 1588. However, the Spanish attached England and England, having no Navy, impressed all of her fishing vessels and private merchant ships into Naval service. Finally, in 1590, three years after leaving the colonists which included his daughter, son-in-law and infant granddaughter, he returned to Roanoke Island to find it deserted, but not destroyed. It appeared as if the colonists had simply moved. A single word, a clue, Croatan, was carved on a tree. The Croatan were the friendly Indians living nearby. Before John’s departure, he had instructed the colonists to carve crosses if they had to leave in distress. There were no crosses.

John White would spend the rest of his life searching for the Lost Colonists. Many hints and clues indicate that at least some of the Colonists survived and were assimilated into the native tribes. The question is, did they, and if so, who are they today?

In 1993, the original site of the Croatan village was located. Subsequent archaeological and genealogical research suggests that the colonists did survive, and that when the land was granted to settlers, it was granted to some of those survivors who were by that time considered to be Indians. With recent advances in DNA for genealogy, we finally have, today, the ability to solve the mystery. We have created a plan that combines history, genealogy and DNA to solve the mystery. However, we can’t do this alone. We need the help of the families who have been identified as “families of interest”, being either roster members of the Lost Colony of those who obtained land grants on the original Croatan village site. Many of those names are the same.

In order to educate people and work closely with people who are interested, we are sponsoring the Lost Colony Symposium for DNA and Recent Research Sept. 7-9, 2007 at the Lost Colony Center in Williamston, NC. The symposium will be held between the Center and the Holiday Inn, as noted on the flyer at http://www.lost-colony.com/DNAsymflyer.html.

Given that your surname is one of those on our “Names of Interest” list, I hope that people on the list will join with us in our research. I am hoping from this mailing, aside from encouraging people to attend the Symposium, to achieve the following:

1. To identify a primary research person or persons for your particular surname who would serve as a contact/coordinator for future postings, requests and research.

2. To identify a family archival website(s) if one exists.
3. To identify if there are any families of that surname that are from NC (or early coastal SC or VA), have oral histories of Indian or "mixed" heritage, are involved with any of the tri-racial isolate groups (Melungeons, Red Bones, etc.) and/or have any oral history of the Lost Colonies.

4. To determine if the family group is involved already with DNA testing, and if so, who coordinates that effort.
5. To determine if there is any research occurring or that has occurred for your surname in Great Britain, and if not, if anyone is interested in pursuing that avenue.

To become involved with the Lost Colony project, or to support the project, please attend our Symposium. Our project plan will be announced at the Symposium, and we have a long list of wonderfully educational speakers. Bring your pedigree charts and your genealogy as the right people will be present to help you with your testing plan.

If you can’t attend the conference, you can still join the project. Information will be posted shortly about how to do that on the Lost Colony website. We are in the process of setting us a private newsgroup for project members only which will also be available after the symposium. Furthermore a blog is being created and blog location info will be posted on the Lost Colony website as well.

If you are interested in this project or can be of help in any way, please contact me at restes@comcast.net.

I'm stuck...please help - Blounts in IL & IN

My Great Grandparents were Elmer & Beaulah Mae Mansfield Blount. None of the family seems to know anything about the ancestors of these two and recently it was discovered that Beaulah Mae may have had another name. All the info I know is that they were living in IL (grandma only remembers a train ride from somewhere in IL to Montpelier IN) when Beaulah Mae died in child birth. There were 7 or 8 children at that time which was around 1917-1919. The family went to Montpelier for the funeral where their mother was buried. No one knows what happened after that as everyone was tight lipped and now all have passed. I know the family eventually ended up in southern Indiana. Any info would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hosea G. Blount, 7th NC Regt., CSA

In a cemetery near me in NY are the graves of several CSA soldiers who died in NYC as prisoners of war. They were from the 7th Regt. NC Inf. and were taken prisoner (to my belief) at the battles of Ft. Clarke and Ft. Hatteras, August 28, 1861. Among them is a Hosea G. Blount. I sent to the National Archives and the following info was learned:
He was a Pvt. in Capt. H.A. Gilliam's Company ("Morris Guards") of the 7th Regt. NC INf. Volunteers (later to become part of the 17th NC State Troops). He enlisted on May 3, 1861 at Plymouth, NC. - Another paper states same date but gives place of enlistment as Washington Co., NC. - He was 20 yrs old at time of enlistment. No parents names nor place of birth given. He died 9/29/1861 (probably from disease) at Fort Columbus (located on what is now known as Governors Island), New York City. He is buried in Cypress Hills National Cemetery, Brooklyn NY, Grave #4444.
I have no family connection to this person and no further info, but am posting this message because I was seeing so many folks in here who have Blounts in NC, and thought this info might be of some value to somebody.

Dear Blunts:
I am looking for the genealogy of John lovejoy and Bathsheba Blunt. I am a descendant of them. My grandmother was a Lovejoy. We are having trouble locating a Timtohy Lovejoy who may have been a son of John's. We also think that Timothy may have had a son by the same name which that Timothy had a son Palmer which is my gggggrandfather. If you have anything that could help us locate Timothy Lovejoy from the Blunt side of the family, we would be so grateful. Please e-mail me with anything you have.

Frances Emerson
Lemuel Blount

My wife is related to Lemuel Blount m. Anna Coye through son Amasa Blount m. Serina Black through Son Oscar Lemuel Blount m Emma Bullard through daughter Jenny Blount married William Weber (My wifes great grandparents). I would be interested in exchanging information on this Blount Family. Lemuel was the son of Elisha Blount and Sallie Davis. The Elisha Blount lineage is traced back to like 10 AD at the LDS church. I have not verified any of it as of yet, but thought it would be fun to try. Has anyone found a will or probate on Elisha? I have his Rev War Pention and it doesn't hardly mention anything about his families. Only mentions his oldest son, nothing further.

Early Florida Blounts

Can anyone help me with the following Blounts?
I am searching for the roots of the following Blounts who probably settled in Florida during the Spanish period.

Philip Blount, born between 1780 and 1790. Found in the 1830 Gadsden Co. Florida census.
Cornelius Blount born between 1790 and 1800, found adjacent to Philip in the same census. He was also a recipient of three land grants in Gadsden County after it became an Ameircan territory.
John Blount born in Florida 1811, and his sister, Rebecca, also born about 1810 in Florida. Rebecca was the first wife of my gggrandfather Alexander James McKenzie. They were married in Gadsden County in 1829. In 1844 John Blount and Alexander McKenzie were in the process of migrating to Texas when both lost their entire families in the collision of the steamboats Buckey and DeSoto on the Mississippi.

Both returned to Gadsden County and remarried.

John married Martha Unknown and lived in Decatur County Georgia until the 1850s. At that time, he moved to Jackson County, Florida
John's children from his second marriage were:
Jacob A. Blount (born abt 1847 ) see 1860 Marianna Florida census for all names and age)
Lovenia Blount (abt 1849)
John Philip Blount.

Based purely on age, I believe that John and Rebecca's father was the above named, Philip Blount. Both Philip and Cornelius appear in close proximity to the listing for Alexander McKenzie (and his father, Daniel McKenzie) in the above mentioned 1830 census.

It is clear to me from the family names that they are part of the NC Blounts but I have not been able to figure out how they connect. I do believe that Redding Blount of Gadsden County is part of this mix.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

W. Hugh Tucker

Claude Clifford Blount (Robbins)

My great grandfather Claude Clifford Blount was born in 1887 in Arkansas. His mother was Martha V. McAnally and father was Jefferson Davis Blount. They were both from Miller/Camden counties in Missouri. Claude's parents divorced and he was raised by his mother and step father Joseph C. Robbins. Claude used the last names of Blount and Robbins both interchangeably, so he is difficult to trace. I have 2 postcards he wrote to his younger half brother in approximately 1907 when Claude was in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). I have no idea why he was there or what he was doing. He is my roadblock.
I am researching the blount's as they followed the same migration pattern as my line and I hoped I could get some clues from this family. Just to let you know the pension record for Elijah states that Pharoah is their eldest son. I believe he later went by Frary. His death was in Michigan, Hillsdale county His cemetary record shows Pharah d: 31 Oct 1851 73-1-7. I believe he is the head of household in 1870 living with a son Lemuel and my gg grandfather's brother James Cary who was living with this family after his mother's death. If you should run into any Cary names I would appreciate a response. If you would like more info on my research regarding the Blount (Blunt's) I will be happy to pass this along.

My gg grandmother was Molly Blount married to Enoch Hunsucker.

Her parents were Wiley Edney Blount (b1825 TN)and Mary Ann Gooch.
I believe his parents to be Isaac Blount married to Catherine Lovey Jones.
They were both from North Carolina, he was born abt 1781.

Family says that Molly had ggg uncles that were William Blount and Willie Blount, prominent politicians. Her gggg grandparents would be Jacob Blount and Salter Baker.

I know that Isaac Blount was born in North Carolina and removed to TN in 1815.

Because of common names among generations and lack of sourcing. I am unable to link Isaac to the correct set of parents. I believe his parents or grandparents to be children of Salter Baker and Jacob Blount.

I have seen one source that believes he descends from Benjamin Blount, same generation as above, and cousin to those children.

Any suggestions, information, sources, points in the right direction would be so appreciated.
