Blums from Luxembourg

I have traced my husband's family to Luxembourg. They go back to at least the late 1600s. I don't have access to anything before that. Anybdy else have a Blum in Luxembourg?

My mothers maiden name is Blum and I have always been close to that side of my family. Her father was a son of immigrants from Germany. The name is pronounces Bloom, in German but spelled Blum. I think most Blum's come from Germany so the pronunciation should not vary.

My husband's family says Blum as in plum. We believe the great-grandfather of the family was from Luxembourg. His name was Prosper Martin Blum. He had a brother named Edouard, and his father was Jean-Baptiste Blum

My family are Bloems. Our ancestor emigrated to Brazil, then generations later my grandfather moved to the States. We're the ONLY Bloems I know who pronounce it "Bloym" like "coin." I think it happened that way because in Brazil they tried to make it 2 syllables (blo-eem) and then it got mushed into one syllable. It used to drive me nuts as a kid because I couldn't understand why everyone kept pronouncing my name "wrong." :)

Now I'm married and have the nice, pronouncable name of "Malewska" which everyone also gets wrong. (It's MaLESSka, don't pronounce the W)

When my grandpa lived in Germany, it was "Bloom." When he moved to the U.S., everyone was pronouncing it wrong, so he didn't even bother because he stilled wanted people to spell it right. So we go by "Blum."

Iif Norman's father was Jacob, and his mother was Clara Gottesman Blum, and Norman had brothers leonard, and harold, sisters Bertha, Florence, Hilde, Sophie, and eleanor, Please contact me as my Grandfather sidney was Clara's brother and I have no knowledge of who and where any of the Gottesmans were and any cousins I may have.

I pronounce my name "Bloom". This is the only way I know. My family arrived from Germany in the 1860's so I would assume it carried over.

No, it doesn't sound at all familiar. Flora's maiden name was Isaac. She lived in New York City from the 1920's until the late 70's.

Believe or not there are/were multiple Flora Blum's in Florida. My dad's cousin was Aaron Blum his second wife was Flora Levy who was a widow whose married name was Einson.

So I'm sure we're not connected.

My 3rd Great Grandfather, Conrad Blüm, came to Australia from Germany in 1858. The name changed to Bliim and Blum depending on which of his children it followed. The former variation is pronounced "Blim" and the later "Bloom".

We had a small family, most of whom have passed away, but I've always wondered what happened to a cousin, named Stephen. I think he spelled it that way. Does anyone know a Stephen Blum?

Hi, I happened to stumble across this while looking at a map of my old neighborhood. My maiden name was Blum, and was always pronounced "Blum" rhyming with plum. My grandfather left Romania as a teenager, and settled in Brooklyn, NY. I grew up there, until I was a teenager. I had come across people with the name "Bloom", or "Blumberg" (pronounced "bloomberg") while growing up. This is an interesting board.

My name is Dawn (nee Wolfe) Bischoff. I am related to Thomas George Blum who was the son of Edwin and Minnie Blum. Edwin was the next older brother of Melvin Thomas Blum's father Thomas George Blum.

Let me know if you would like to exchange family group information. I realize your post is rather old (1999), but I just found it today (2008).

Edwin and Thomas' parents were Johann Peter Blum and Rosina Blum. I am trying to locate where Rosina is buried. Johann Peter is in the Lewis Cemetery, Jordan Township, Green County, WI. My understanding is that Rosina died in April of 1881. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

I have been trying to track down my Blum relatives and noticed some similar names in these postings. My Great Grandfather Joseph Franz Blum (1880) came to US from Germany in the late 1890's and married Genevieve Hochstricher born 1881 Arselfingen, Baden, Germany. I do not have any info on who Joseph came here with. His parents names were Andrew and Rosina. I do not know if Joseph had any siblings. He named his children Henry (1902), Genevieve, Joseph Franz, Edward, Rosina & Andrew. Joseph settled in NY but it is very possible that whoever he came with settled in other areas. His wife Genevieve came in 1902 it is not clear whether they married in Germany and he came here first or if they married in NY.

My Mother is a Blum from NY. We pronounce it Blum like plum and is it spelled that way as far as we have been able to go back to Germany. Some of the family says that the ending was dropped. Maybe it was Blumberg or something like that at one time.

What I have found out about my great grandfather is that he was born in France about 1848,First name Charles, came to america about 1860 Married Margaret Nebit who was born in England about 1867. My mother recalls some other relatives of Charles Blum living in Nassau county NY.

Hello, I am a Blum from Missouri. The name in our family anyway was pronounced Bloom until my father went into the Korean War at which time the pronounced it Blum (like plum) I guess and that is how I pronounced it during my lifetime.

P.S. Note on the Blum side that Urton is only 1/4 of the family. There was Bill's mom Bonnie Ellers(not married to Urton) and Phyllis's mom and dad, last name Volkman and Phyllis's mom Dana maiden name was Wallin. It looks like a mix breed of England, Germany, Danish and Finnish.

Bill's dad was William Andrew Urton born 12/14/1889 to 7/20/1957 to William Southwell Urton 8/9/1865 to 8/22/1917 (died in France possibly during WW1)and Mary Jane Goulding Urton 7/31/1863. I beliewe William Andrew Urton had 7 brothers and sisters. He himself I believe had 3 children Jack M Urton 8/9/1915-8/26/2004 and Herbert Urton and Eileen Urton. Herbert and Eileen are deceased also. Bill's grandfather William Southwell Urton was born in Ecclesail Bierlow, which is situated on the border of Derbyshire and West Yorkshire England. William Andrew Urton was a prominant cattle and grain farmer and director of Sask Wheat Pool and was nominated Progressive Conservative candidate for Prince Albert in federal election held by Prime Minister Mackenzie King. Jack M Urton took over father's business ventures. Still searching for more information.

Joseph took as his second wife Addie Elizabeth Blum in Arlington, VA on June 20, 1931. They had three children:
George, Mary Elizabeth, and Lewis.
Mary Elizabeth married a man by the name of Holper, FNU.
Does anyone have any information on this family?
Addie was born in Davey Co, NC on Mar 17 1893 to Louis Alexander and Emma Caroline Long Blum, and died Dec 5 1966 in City of Industry, Loss Angeles, CA.
My m-i-l says that her uncle Andrey was "friendly and full of fun!" Her mother was Joseph Andrew's sister.

The information you have on Thomas James Blum alias Walton--Can you tell me how you found he was also William Walton.( Iam interested in this as when I first started my research I was following a William Walton a footballer but since have found there was no connection)
Thomas James Blum & Caroline Owen are listed as parents on my uncle's ( Thomas George Blum) birth certificate, the date of their marriage is the same date of marriage of Thomas James Walton & Mary Caroline Alberteen Jenkins listed on the birth certifacate of my mother Florence May Walton.According to other birth certificates Thomas & Mary had 3 children. The information you have on Thomas James have you obtained it through you own research or from other members I have been in contact with ? I hope you have done the research that would mean the brick wall I have has been cracked!!!!I have almost finished writing up everything I have on the Blums & will send you a copy as soon as I can. I have had a lot of help from Laurel Blume, Fran Blum also some bits from Rosalie & Nadene.

I have Blums in Wisconsin, but thus far have found no connection to Pennslyvania. I have a Henry Blum (b. 1856 d.1891) who married Alvina Jenuseh. They had two children (+8 from Alvinas previous marriage)... Rev. Gustave H. Blum (b. 1887 d. 1970) and Gertrude Blum. Rev G.H. Blum married Mary Demuth, and they had my grandfather Lawrence P. Blum.

Another Death.

Death, a Second time, Visists Our Town and Srikes Down its Victim.

Eddie, the little son of Mr. and Mrs. Blum, died last Wednesday evening of membranous croup. His age was 7 years 11 months and 2 days. He was a bright, intelligent little boy and his sudden death falls with great sorrow upon the hearts of his parents. He was taken to Kahoka, Mo., for burial, the father accompanying the remains. He will return from his sad mission on Saturday. The bereaved family have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.

I am descended from his brother William Henry. We have common ancestors in Peter Blum & Susannah Walton.

The information I have originally comes from my sister Nadene, who was researching the Blums some years ago. I have only recently taken on the job.

I know that Nadene has a number of certificates relating to the Blum family of which I am yet to get copies. Hopefully she will also be able to shed some light on Thomas when I see her in person.

I wish I had more information on him.

Surnames: Blum, Alston, McRory

My great grandfather was a Blum, pronounced like a flower BLOOM. My grandfather was Matthias Blum, born in West Virginia. Most of his adult life he was in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. He lived on Rutdledge Street with his wife Mary Tierney-Blum.

I have not been able to find any information on his siblings or his parents. If related would love to hear from you.

Wilhelm Blum was born in Mimmenhausen, Baden, Germany on 10 September 1826, not in Munchhausen, as we thought at first. Mimmenhausen is near the Bodensee (Lake Constance), near Switzerland. Wilhelm's younger brother Leon (1825) had a son named Leon (1860). His older brother Isidor (1831)had seven children. Maria, Mathilda, and Wilhelmina Blum survived past childhood. Wilhelm's parents Joseph Blum (m. Anna Maria Böck from Nussdorf/Uberlingen, Baden) had several brothers with children, whose names/dates we have. NBeesley and I would love to find some others related to this (our mother's)family! We only know that Wilhelm emigrated. Perhaps there were others. We are especially curious about a Peter Blum who lived/bought property in Newark, NJ very near Wilhelm in the late 1800's.
