Dear all.
It would be helpful if American researchers, particularly when heading a Post with a reference to a person born outside of US, could remember that your abbreviations for state/county/town mean nothing to researchers outside of US who may be researching the same family.
TX, KY, MO, and AR are, preumably, abbreviations for your states but are as incompehensible to us in the UK as are our abbreviations such as Hants, Oxon, Bucks and Warks.
It is appreciated that we all become single-minded in our researches but it would be helpful to others separated by a common tongue that we should be aware that others could be helped by our research, providing it is made simple.
KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) should rule.

Colyn.

Carol,

I am a fanatic when I want to find someone in the census!
So I first looked for just "first name" Francis in TX, and went through every county. Then tried Richard, in every county. Then just the letter F in every county. Finally put in Frank, even though we hadn't seen him use that name...and lo and behold: there he was.

Census takers didn't always know how to spell and only wrote what they thought they heard the name was. We've found Blaudle, Blundle, Blumdell, Bludell, Bundle, Bundell, etc., you name it, if it can be mutilated it has been!

I am so glad you found the stepsons. Good luck with your future research.

Tosca

For many years, I searched 1860 census' KY;MO;AR. for my GGrandmother Mary Elizabeth Graddy with parents. In March of 2007, we subscribed to Ancestry. Within a week, I struck it lucky finding her Sister Martha Jane in 1860 Fannin Co., TX census. I knew it was correct the minute I saw the census. Mary Elizabeth was enumerated as M.E. Graddey with Father J.J.Graddey 30;M.E.Graddey(obviously, this was not supposed Mother Elizabeth Cox Graddy, so started looking for a marriage record which I found quickly for John Graddy & Emaline McClure m. in 1858)M.E. Graddey 7KY;Wm R.Graddey 7/12 TX. So, between 1855 & 1858 Elizabeth Cox Graddy died. I also found an entry where J.J.Graddy 30 (1861)had joined a militia in Hunt Co., TX.
The next census I found was 1880 Hunt Co., with Evaline/Emaline enumerated with Francis Blundell; two sons Wm R.Graddy 20 TX; John F.Graddy 18 TX; and, the two daughters she had with Francis Blundell. I haven't learned just what happened to Elizabeth Cox Graddy; i.e., whether she died KY or TX or somewhere during migration. I assume that John J. Graddy died about 1861-65 during the CW. I haven't succeeded in finding a record of his death.
M.J.Graddey 5KY

Perhaps she left him and divorced him because he was misbehaving elsewhere?

I have Francis and Evaline marrying abt 1865, w/ Rebecca b abt 1866, and Mary b abt 1867,per the ages on the 1880 census.

Do you have his divorce record, or the 1870 census for him and Evaline?

The Wm. R. Graddy(Grady) I am researching was born to John J. Graddy(Graddey-1860 Hunt Co., TX census)and Emaline/Evaline McClure Graddy Blundell(she m. Francis Blundell(bn LA 1812-1815)in Dec 1859. Graddy & Emaline McClure Graddy m. Hunt Co., TX 1858.
There is a divorce record for a Francis Blundell from Rebecca Williams in Hunt Co., TX just before the birth of these two daughters. I have been unsuccessful in finding Francis & Emaline McClure Graddy Blundell in TX in 1870 and in finding a marr record for them.

Hello another Colin.
So pleased to hear from you as you may hold the missing link.
I have some of your line back to Robert/Mary of Upham. Their son Robert married Ann Samways in Swansea 1800.
I cannot find the birth of Robert the elder. Their eldest son, William, was born 1792 so assuming Robert was aged 25 when he married his birth should be around 1767. I can find nothing on the IGI relating to this birth to give me his parents.
Please come back to me direct at colyn.blundell@talktalk.net
when we can converse further. I have my line back to early 1500's anad am convinced your line links somewhere to mine. More details re potential links can be provided later.
Look forward to hearing from you
Colyn.
Hello Josey.
Re Stanley Humphrey Tremelling. Are you sure of your dates?
"Stanley Humphrey Tremelling 1892 - 1915 was the half great uncle of my mother. He was the only child of her grandfather James Tremelling 1848 - 1906 & his second wife Lucy Maria Blundell 1885 - ?."
If Lucy Maria Blundell was born 1885 she would have been onmly seven years of age if her son Stanley was born in 1892.
It may pay you to check.
Colyn.
I guess a nurse child is like a child being fed / cared for by a female that is not the mother!!
Sounds as if the mother or both parents had died by the 1881 census. I guess she had no other siblings after that date!? Did she have any before that date?

Have you found the marriage details for the SWIFT / BLUNDELL ancestors?

Have you found the death details?

Best wishes,

Ian.

found this ref. must be yours:
Birth: March quarter 1881, W.Derby, 8b, 489
SWIFT Emily
Stanley Humphrey Tremelling 1892 - 1915 was the half great uncle of my mother. He was the only child of her grandfather James Tremelling 1848 - 1906 & his second wife Lucy Maria Blundell 1885 - ?.

Stanley died aged in the battle of Festubert in France in WW1; he had arrived in France in March 1915 & died in May 1915. I recently went to the Le Touret memorial where there are 300 or so graves and 14000 names of those whose bodies were never found. Stanley's name is one of these.

I attach a pic of the Le Touret Memorial panel with Stanley's name. I have been recently told that Stanley's name also appears on the War Memorial in Stockwell, London.

I am keen to find out if anyone has a picture of Stanley at any age. Please le tme know if you do, I would be very grateful.

Regards, Josey

I know I've got the right one: his father is a scale beam filer that's his occupation on the marriage certificate (and father witnesses the marriage too)

Just for clarification: nurse child meant a child for whom someone was paid to look after. If a poor orphan had been orphaned she would have been in the orphanage: quite often they were children who were either illegitimate or whose fathers were dead or had done a bunk and the mothers had to go to the city to find work.

Hello Ian: thanks for your help so much. I've checked all the records I can find. I do know that in the 1901 census, she was a visitor with an Ellen Burrows, but I seem to remember that Emily was with her for quite some time, then Emily married Joanathan Calderbank in 1901. The 1881 census, said that she was 4 months old,and that seems about right. I was wondering, if she were born out of wedlock? Where would I search for that? Or are there any records I can find in between the 1881 and 1901 census besides what I find on Ancestry? You've been so kind, thanks again, I was so glad to hear from you again. sincerely, Joan

My Grammom said, an aunt had taken her out for the day, and the aunt pointed out a handsome man getting on the bus. She said the aunt told her that was her Father, and never saw him again. How would I know if this was a case of just abandonment? Are there any records that would prove this? I guess you're saying that you don't think this is connected to your Blundell family so I really appreciate your response.
If you run across anything that you feel might help,I'll be sitting at this old computer box. Thanks again, Joan

thanks so much for your reply. I have a birth cert that says James Swift and Elizabeth Blundell gave birth to an Emily Swift on 12/13/1880 and that they were living at 26 Orlando st, Bootle. Does this come anywhere near the Blundell you know? I'm sooooo stuck. Thanks so much for your efforts. I agree the Blundell you're speaking about, would be pretty dumb to start over at that age with a new baby, boy, I sure wouldn't want to start over. Maybe this was your Elizabeths daughter? Thanks Joan

I hope you have the answers I've been searching for!! My Grandmother was Emily Swift, b 12/13/1880 in the sub-district of Walton, lancaster. Her father was James Swift and her mother was Elizabeth Blundell, the address on the birth cert was 26 Orlando St in Bootle. I don't think, from conversations years ago with my Gramma, that she knew either of her parents. I found in 1881 census, an Emily Swift living with Mary Thompson, listed as a Nurse Child. I don't even know what that phase means. Boy I hope you can answer some thing for me.. thanks for being a god listener,
joanwiltondaniels@verizon.net
