Blyth/Blythe, Scottish Borders from 1800

Over the last few years I have been researching the Blyth/Blythe families in the Scottish Borders, including the Yetholm Gipsies, and have gathered loads of info on the Blyths and their related families. My own Blyth ancestors originally came from Northumberland/Yorkshire and moved throughout the Scottish Borders from about 1800 mainly in the Yetholm, Galashiels and Selkirk areas and then to Edinburgh where they finally settled.
My 4ggrandfather, David Blyth, was the father of Charles Blythe I, King of the Gipsies 1847-61.
I would be pleased to share or exchange info with anyone who is also interested in the Blyths.
Regards,
Fran
more Blyths in Scotland

My grandmother was a Blyth and for generations her family lived in Greenock,Renfrewshire, Scotland. She was Isabella (Bella), one of nine children (names supplied on request) only two boys, William and James. Her father was William Anderson Blyth (b1858), m Annie Morgan. Next generation, David Blyth (b c1824) and Margaret Robertson Anderson (he may have been married previously). Then Thomas Blyth. No record of where David and father Thomas were born. However, a son of David's (another Thomas) was born in Newburgh, Fife, which is the only suggestion I have that these Blyths might have come from Newburgh to Greenock. Any possible connections out there?

I am trying to trace my grt grt grandfather Samuel Blyth. The family has always believed he was born in England, I reckon about the early 1800s. He was in the British Army and was stationed in Co Cavan Ireland, where he met and married a local girl Fanny McVitie. He was then posted to India but Fanny returned home due to ill health. Their son, also called Samuel, was born in Belturbet in 1854. I know Samuel snr was still alive when Samuel jnr married Susan McCaffrey in 1881, as he is named on their marriage certificate. Family stories link him to Devonport, where he may have been stationed, and Bath, but I can't find any links with either place in the UK censuses.

Family stories mention Devonport, but that is where he may have been stationed, and Bath but I cannot find him on any census for there. In the 1800s he was posted to Co Cavan Ireland, where he met and married a local girl Fanny McVitie in about 1850. With the army he was posted to India but Fanny returned home due to ill health. In 1854, in Belturbet Co Cavan, they had a son also named Samuel. I know Samuel snr was still alive when Samuel jnr married Susan McCaffrey in 1881 as he is listed on their marriage certificate as a witness.
SAMUEL BLYTH/E

I am searching for my great great grandfather Samuel Blyth. He was born in the first half of the 1880s, we believe in England, and joined the British Army - regiment unknown. He was posted to Ireland where he met and married Fanny McEvitie, in Co Cavan, possibly Belturbet. He was posted to India but Fanny returned due to ill health to Ireland. Their son, also named Samuel, was born in 1854. I know that Samuel Snr was still alive in 1881 when Samuel got married as he is listed on the marriage certificate as living and occupation as 'soldier'. I do not know when he died or what happened to him and Fanny. I have not been able to connect him with any Samuel Blythes in the England census returns.

He was posted to Co Cavan where he married Fanny McVitie, a local girl. He was posted to India but Fanny returned home through ill health. Their son Samuel was born in Belturbet in 1854 where he lived all his life. I do not know if they remained in Ireland. I have been told there may be a link with Devonport but that is a navy base.

Blyths in Brisbane

I'm wondering if anyone out there might know of a Brisbane Blyth connection.

My great grandfather's older brother, Benjamin Hall Blyth (born c1884 in the London area), emigrated to Brisbane at some point in the 1920s/30s with his wife Lil (we think the full name is Lillian), and children. There were 11 children in the family, two of whom died young, one of these on the voyage to Australia and was buried at sea. One of the children was believed to be called Alfred Maurice Blyth, another was a second Benjamin Hall Blyth.

The family is related to the prominent civil engineering family of Edinburgh in the 19th Century.

If this matches up with anything you know, please contact me.

Can anyone help Please ?? I'm trying to trace the whereabouts of a Dorothy Marie (Maria) Blythe (Blyth).

According to a copy of a birth certificate dated 1927, Dorothy Marie Blythe gave birth to a baby girl in Hammersmith, London, after which she seems to dissappear leaving her child to be brought up by it's father. William George Rowe born in Fulham 1889.

Any info on Dorothy Marie (Maria) Blythe (Blyth) would be greatly appreciated as I seem to have come to a complete stand still with my research and have no idea who Dorothy Marie Blythe is or what even became of her after 1927.

BLYTH/BLYTHE ANCESTORS

My Great, Great Grandmother was Euphemia Blythe. She was born in the early 1800's in the Borders area of Scotland, Westruther, Roxburgh, Bassendean).(I think her parents were James Blythe and Euphemia Wight). She married George McLeod in 1824 at Westruther and they had approximately 7 children. Betsy McLeod (their youngest daughter) born 10 November 1838 was my Great Grandmother and she married George Grant in 1863. They emigrated to Australia with their children James, Thomas, William, John, Jane and Euphemia on the "S.S. Abergeldie" in November 1884 and the family settled in the Albury/Wodonga/Beechworth area. Does any of this family history tie in with your Blythe's?

Query- Scottish/Canadian Connexion

I am trying to locate the roots of my family. I'll give you what I know:
William (Billy) Blyth married Minnie-Duncan (she rechristened herself Jean) Morrison. My Father John Douglas Morrison Blyth was born (1924). I (James Douglas Duncan Blyth)was born in 1978, and the connections with our ancestry have been shrouded by lack of interest.
They lived in or around Prestonpans, Scotland, and ran a pub on Billy's retirement from professional football (arsenal and Scotland- 1915-30).
Williams brother Archibald Blyth moved to Canada with a bank before the 1st World War, following the Kalkiry (sp) Gold Rush. He has not been seen since 1951 in Montreal. He had sons who were twins.
I would dearly love to know of anyone who has any leads on any of this. My father especially would like to know what happened to his uncle and the offspring.

Robert Blye

I have an ancestor known by the name of Robert Edward Blye. He married Vicey Angeline Bynum in Pope cty. Arkansas in 1875. He supposedly had some pretty bad trouble with the law and may have changed his firs or middle names and the spelling of Blye. My grandfather thought that the Blyes originally came from England. He was stocky in build with light hair and light blue or gray eyes. He had 4 children in Ar. before 1880 and is listed on that census in Johnson cty. Ar. Sometime after that he moved his family to S.E. Ok. where he had a farm around the Hugo, Atlers, and Grant area. His daughter Dora Belle Blye Stripling is my greatgrandmother. I believe he had at least 2 brothers. I have names of his children. Anyone with info can get me direct at Dlbh2ofall@aol.com.

Blyth research

I may well be in quite the wrong area for 'my' Blyths, but can anyone out there help as I have come to a total dead end! I am trying to find anything to do with a Joseph Blyth, my great great grandfather, born somewhere around 1800, probably in the Wolverhampton/Birmingham area, but no proof of this. I know his son was a Frederick Blyth, born (so he claimed on censuses) in Wolverhampton UK about 1835, and died in Birmingham UK in 1895, having worked in Birmingham most of his life. I have no proof of any brother or sister, but possibly a sister Alice.
Joseph is a complete mystery, I can't even find a death record in S. Catherine's list!
Any help or suggestions would be well received.
Thanks.
Alison.
