John Boadle

I am seeking information on my g-g-grandparents John Boadle (c 1819) and Mary Heron (c 1822). I believe they were married in Ulverstone, Cumbria in 1847 and travelled to Australia from Liverpool on the "Garland"in 1852 with their two children John (abt 1849) and Mary (abt 1850). Another child, Elizabeth was born in Castlemaine, Victoria in 1855. She married Isaac Harris in 1876 and died in Maryborough in 1914. If anyone has any details on John & Mary I would love to hear from you as I can't link them up with any other Boadles listed on Ancestry.com. Thanks, Liz

would anyone connect with me regarding information to what I copied here as an email discussion between a relative and myself below -

- a relative sent me the following information related to a uron-Bodle marriage and "family were in the shipbuilding trade".-

It is possible that my grandmother assumed that her father's line was Swedish but that the missing Swede did not come through the Uron name but some other branch. She was a dear woman but got things confused on occasion. Her father, George Justice Uron, was the last riverboat captain on the Delware River. He piloted the ferry that went between Philadephia and Camden. Several previous generations of the family were in the shipbuilding trade. Was that a chosen profession for the Viking types in the area? More likely, the shipyards of Philly attracted a lot immigrant labor.

I just did some research on our Leonard Uron. He married Magaret Bodle, and there are nine children listed. However, this list gives two named "John," two named "James," and another two named "George." We might assume that these are duplicate listings (or possibly children that died and the next child born was given the same name, however unlikely). Or we might that other Ancestry users have different dates for these children. Anyway, we have five different names for this Leonard's children: John, James, George, May, and Effie.

please connect with me regarding this -
here or thru my email -

nettechdesign@msn.com

Eric Miller

Hi There Anthony,
My mother's maiden name was Doris Isabel Boadle - her father being Isaac Boadle, son of John Boadle. My first cousin Brian Boadle has done all the Boadle family tree here in Australia, and I am sure he would be delighted to fill in any gaps you may have. It is just such an uncommon name. His email address is brianb@aanet.com.au.

Kind regards.
Marion

Anthony, I think you probably have all this but I've also found handwritten notes from the Cumberland paquet:

1776 Captain James Boadle now Master of the Mary - of Plumblands Lane

1787 John Boadle Master of the Mary and Betty died

1792 Captain John Boadle of Whitehaven Master of Mary and Betty married in Cork to Miss Barnes of Waterford

1824 Death of John Boadle of Plumblands Lane Member of the Society of friends

1831 Marriage at Friends Meeting House of Elizabeth Boadle to John Green of Belfast. Daughter of the late Captian John Boadle of the Scipio

Also within these notes:

Whitehaven St Nicholas Parish register James Boadle of Plumblands Lane buried

Will at Preston R/O - John Boadle Master Mariner died 9/3/1824. Twp Quakers affirmed genuineness of draft will
1) Jonathan Dixon Master mariner
2) James Nicholson
Effects divided by wife Elizabeth and daughter Jane

From Quaker Register of Carlisle R/O -

birth 31/12/1799 Jane Boadle daughter of John & Elizabeth of Whitehaven (mariner) Meeting Pardshaw

birth 21/6/1834 Elizabeth Oceana Boadle daughter of William barnes Boadle & Mary Master Mariner of Whitehaven. Born on board Helvellyn (a Boadle Bros vessel) in the Indian Ocean Lat 00.20 N Long 67 E

The John & Mary Boadle that my father was in contact with wrote that they had been unable to connect the Quaker sea-faring Boadles with the farming Boadles that had been traced back to Christopher Boadle in Cleator and also that they had a lot of names (presumably Bodle/Boadles) that they were unable to tie in.

Do you have a copy of the book "From Cumberland to Cape Horn"? Apparently this mentions the Boadle Brothers shipbuilders but I don't know how much information there is.

Sorry I can't be more help but I'll keep digging.

Julie

Anthony, I've had a look at the information I got from my father - it came from a John and Mary Boadle in Wolverhampton in the early 1980s. They seem to have been in contact with Rodway Eustace so I think we have a lot of the same information. From the tree that they collated I can see where the Australian branches come from but there's no mention of a John Boadle d.1824 although there is a handwritten list that seems to list Bodle/Boadle christenings at the meeting house Whitehaven (dissenters). This mentions:

Mary bapt.1765 daughter of James and Jane Bodle sailor Plumblands Lane

Jane bapt. 1769 daughter of James and Jane Bodle Plumblands Lane

Elizabeth bapt. 1773 daughter of James and Jane Boadle Plumblands Lane

There are no sons of this marriage listed but there is

Benjamin bapt. 1719 son of Joseph Bodle Mason
Joseph bapt. son of William and Elizabeth Bodle
Benjamin bapt. son of Benjamin and Mary Bodle Scotch Street
William bapt. 1828 son of John and Elizabeth Boadle Croft Pit

I don't if any of these are from your line but the Plumblands Lane connection is interesting.

Julie
Hi Julie, great to hear from you. The sons of John Boadle (d 1824) where ship masters and shipowners. There names were William Barnes Boadle, who later to moved to Liverpool and lived in Liscard in Chesire. His brothers James and John Boadle were also mariners and owned ships or parts of ships.
Anthony,

Is your John Boadle (d. 1824) one of the Boadle brothers shipbuilders of Whitehaven? My father left me some papers detailing research he & others had done on our Boadle family tree but they didn't have the names of the Boadle brothers & couldn't work out the relationship with our family tree.

You probably already know that the Bodles were mentioned in Caesar Caine's book on Cleator Moor as living in Wath. He mentions a tombstone of John Bodle who died in 1702 aged 77 years. Was married to Agnes with children William, John, Joseph, Janet. Caesar Caine says that he thinks John Bodle senior's father was called Christopher. The names John & Joseph certainly appear very frequently in my family tree.

I'd certainly be interested in knowing how your branch ties in with mine.

Looking for info on Margaret Ann Boadle nee Little

I am looking for any info re death of Margaret Ann (or Anne) Boadle nee Little. I have documentation on the following:

She was born in 1859 in Cleator Cumberland. Parents were Robert Little and Frances Lishman. On 3 Feb 1880 she married my g-grandfather Joseph Boadle (Whitehaven 1856)in St Bees Cumberland. I know of 2 children, Frances born 1880 and William born 1885. From that point on I can find no trace of Margaret.

In the 1891 survey, g-grandfather Joseph was living with his brother John Lawrence Boadle in Barrow-in-Furness. Daughter Frances was living with her grandmother Jane Lawrence Boadle. Son William was living with grandparents Robert & Frances Little.

Joseph married my g-grandmother Barbara Malsed in 1897 in Glasgow. He is listed on the cert as "bachelor" not widower and he changed the spelling of his name to Beodle.

Hope someone can shed some light on Margaret.
Thanks.

Hello again

Just found anothet snippet - a Margaret Boadle married a John Jackson at St Nicholas Church, Whitehaven (fairly close to Cleator) on 6th December 1819. The dates fit so it could be a lead.

Maureen

Hello Nora

I have a record of Jacob and Betty Boadle and the christenings of their five children including Margaret in 1794. This snippet of information came from a John Boadle with Liverpool connections. However it isn't part of a family tree.
The only Jacob on the tree was born 1747 the son of Benjamin and Mary Boadle m.1742 in St Bees.

Jacob married Mary Chambers and they had seven children but no Margaret.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help but do keep in touch as there is a lot of interest in the Boadle clan!

Best wishes

Maureen

Hello Lewis
I have a family tree with your name on it sent to me by John Boadle of Liverpool. It goes back several generations. My interest in the Boadle family comes from a farm in Cumbria UK which I researched.
I will browse this family tree when I have more time and try and find out more about Joseph.

Best wishes

Maureen

My grandfather (David Glenn) moved from Australia to the UK during the 1950's.

I believe he had a brother or father named Joesph. Does this correlate to anyone's tree?

Lewis Boadle

Dear David
My interest in the Boadle family came about through some research I did on a nearby Cumbrian Farm. I traced the ownership back to the 16th century when it was tenanted by the Sumpton family. A daughter then married into the Fleming family who were fullers by trade. One of the Flemings left a very interesting yearbook detailing activities on the farm, which was called Wright Green, in 1786. He had three daughters, the eldest of which was Mary who married Joseph Boadle. They were the parents of Jonathan Fleming Boadle who was born at Wright Green in 1815. Joseph Boadle's family came from Cleator. Unfortunately I have lent my detailed family tree to another Boadle enthusiast but will try and get you some more details. There appears to be quite a lot of interest in this family. I have been offered a family tree of the Argentinian branch recently!
Best wishes
Maureen

Seeking information on Boadle family. I have an Alfred Boadle living with my husbands ggrandfather Albert Orr and Wife Frances in 1920 Census, in New Orleans. Lists Alfred as brother. I assume it is her brother. I also have several letters written to my husband's grandmother Dorothy Orr in 1925 from a Mrs. Alfred Boadle. Address is in London. This is a complete mystery to us. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you, Leslie Adams

Hello Nora

Sorry but I can't link your Margaret Boadle with any of the Jacobs in the family I am researching. The only Jacob of the era you are looking for married Mary Chambers in 1773 and they had seven children between 1775 and 1796 non of whom was called Margaret.

Good luck!

Hi Maureen

Read your notice with interest as my paternal line goes back through the Youdale family to Margaret Boadle 1794 - 1858 who was the daughter of Jacob (Jack) Boadle and his wife Elizabeth. Would be interested if these people appear in your family tree.

Regards Nora

I know that JFR Boadle married H.I.Crombie(b.1904). She was daughter of David William Alexander Crombie and Edith Mary Milman.. Edith daughter of my great Uncle Hugh Miles Milman and Catherine Maule Jardine of pioneering Queensland family. Hugh was my great granduncle. I wondered if JFR and H.I had any children but also interested in JFRs origins/geneology for my records? Hugh Miles was Gov.Resident of Thursday Island and Comm. of Stamps for Queensland.

Gidday David

The only information I have regarding Jonathon Fleming Boadle is that he arrived in Australia in 1841, his brother, Abel Boadle arrived in oz 1852 and their second cousins John Boadle arrived 1857 and John James Boadle arrived with his mother, Jane Benson in 1863. This information was supplied by Brian Boadle of Victoria. If you require further information, drop me a message and I will give him a call to see if he has any more. He probably does.

Cheers
David Boadle
