Do you have a birthdate for this Mary Boan? My GGGGG grandmother was a Boan and she may be a person that some folks are looking for. Courthouse records from SC were burned and she would have seemingly disappeared by 1850 she had been widowed, lost several children and went to La. with a son where she died in 1888 having outlived all of her children. I am searching for her parents.. she was born Nov 16, 1806

Not all of the Boans were from Scotland. In October, I visited St Bees, Cumberland on the west coast of England to get information on my great grandfather. There are a number of Boans throughout the Liverpool area.

I got a message several years back from a Boan in Spain that maintains that in the Roman era, a Roman general was awarded land for his services in northern Spain and it was given the name Boan. Who knows.
Roger Boan

I am trying to track my portion of the Boan family and I have found at least three threads. My portion arrived from England about 1850 and settled in New Jersey. My great grandfather joined the Army and finally wound up in Baltimore. There is a second group of Boans that moved to New Jersdey about 1870 from Canada. The largest group seems to have arrived in the Virginia/North Carolina area in the last 1700 and moved toward South Carolina. From there some went west to Texas while a second group went north and then west as far as Idaho. Good luck in sorting them out.
You may want to do some searches under Bowen as well for the SC/Chesterfield Boans. I know that the names are used interchangably even by siblings in that area. I've cousins in SC that go by Boan but we in NC are all Bowens.

I'm looking for anyone in the Boan family that can give me information about my great great grandfather David Boan. His grand son is David Cornelles Boan son of Lewis John Boan and my mother is Carolyn Grace Boan. I've ran into a deadend. There seem to be no birth or death record or marriage record of him and Lanly(Laney) Freeman Boan. I'd like to know his middle name too. And does anyone know if he was in the civil War? I'v come across two David Boan from Chesterfield Co That were in the war. I thank you!

Can you enlighten me?

John L. J. BOAN, b 07 Mar 1849 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, USA, d 20 Mar 1924 in Darlington County, South Carolina, USA (my 1st cousin 4x removed)married

Isa Jane GAINEY, b 18 Apr 1859, Darlington, South Carolina, USA, d 18 Jan 1931 in Wadesboro, Anson, North Carolina, USA

Would the John Franklin you mentioned be their son whom I have listed as Frank, born about 1884 in SC???? He's my 2nd cousin 3x removed

I also have an Icy who married a Gainey, I believe an Isaac Gainey if you have any information...both were born about in early 1800's and lived in the Darlington area.

One of my great-grandfathers was James Presley Boan, a great, great grandfather was James H. Gainey born Mar 1826'.

Re: Lena Helen Boan Snell

I'm a descendent of Helen Boan Snell. Here's what my research shows:

The Snell side of my family has been a real challenge to uncover and I have finally made progress on one branch. Elihu Boan was born in Illinois 1 August 1809. He married a woman named Millie Asher (b. 10 March 1812 in Tennessee) and they had five sons. Elihu was a farmer and he died in June 1880 in Miller County, Missouri. Elihu and Millie's children were Robert (b 1843), Francis (b 1845), Thomas (b 1848), James (b 1851) and Elihu Jr. (b 1853). Robert and Francis were farmers like their father.

Elihu Boan Jr. got married and had three daughters- Helen, Lily and Laura. Laura married Arthur Adams, who was the mayor of Jefferson City in the 1920s. Lily married Warren Ward. Mr. and Mrs. Ward had a son named Arthur Boone Ward. The other daughter was Helen. Helen married Floyd Snell and they had three children: Jack Hall Snell, Virginia Snell, and Kathryn Snell. Helen later divorced Floyd and married Jay Cleveland.

Jack Hall Snell married Alice McKinney and they had two children: Jack Hall Snell Jr. and Frances Virginia Snell. Alice's father was from Battle Creek, Michigan. Jack and Alice eventually divorced. To keep the children together they went to live with Helen and Jay. When Jay's business went bad in the late 1930's, Helen left him and moved with the children to live with Kathryn in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The children adopted the Cleveland name at that time to become Jack Cleveland and Frances Cleveland. Meanwhile, Jack Sr. married a woman named Thelma and he later died in 1944.

Kathryn was born in Jefferson City, Missouri and married a man named Sonneberg. In 1934, she divorced him with no children and married Bill Gaunt in 1940. Virginia was exiled from the family and reportedly married an FBI agent.
The Boans were Scottish, though being from Galloway in the Southern Uplands, were not a clan (a Highland term).
See www.nationaltrustnames.org.uk and you will see that they nearly all lived in that one region.
A lot of Border Scots moved to Ulster in The Plantation in the early 1600s so some of their descendants mave have moved to North America from Ulster not Scotland.
My grandmother was a Boan.
Norman

My grandmother's name was Sallie Sara Boan..she originated
in the Hartsville, SC area and migrated to the Wadesboro,
NC area...I have heard her mention the names of John "Percy"
Boan many times as well as Archibald Boan....I think she was
about 96 years old when she passed away...probably born around 1890's....someone asked me about their ancestry...
I know they had relatives in the Hartsville, SC area and I
have went with my Mom and Grandmother (Sallie Boan) to visit
their relatives there....
Sallie Married Early Walker Lett and they had 9 children.
Two still live in the Wadesboro, NC area...any info about
the Boan family will be appreciated...
