If anyone has any information regarding the Bochenek family in Olpiny, I would greatly appreciate it. My grandfather, Bronislaw Bochenek, was born there in 1921. His father, Wojciech Bochenek, lived and died there. If I'm not mistaken, by grandfather was one of ten children. His siblings were Alex, Emilia, Helena, Henryk, Jan, Stanislaw, Stefania, Wladislaw, and Zofia.

Hi, I'm from Poland and I just came across this page by accident. My family cames from the the different region than Częstochowa, and as this name is a very common and wide spreaded one, unfortunately, I have some reasons to think that we are not related :-)
I'd like to explain you a little what BOCHENEK name means and how to prounce it properly.
It means "loaf of bread" indeed, but the ending "-ek" means nothing at the moment. In XIXth century it probably ment "little loaf", becaouse they also used word "BOCHEN" which ment "big loaf" or just "loaf". The word "BOCHEN" is not in usage in modern Polish any more, and the word "BOCHENEK" currently means simply "loaf of bread" without suggesting it's size.
While pronouncing "BOCHENEK", one shall pronounce "CH" like "H" in the word "hierarchy", so it shall be so called "voiced sound".
Someone, who posted on this page, was right that our ancestors could be just bakers, who specialised in loafs. It was a common way of creating names in Poland. Names created in this way could existed in the same time in different regions of Poland, and could belong to different, not related families.
Hope these information will help you a little in your genealogy seaches. Sorry for not being more fluent in English.
Magda from Poland

Maria:

I have not done any more research over the last year as I have been busy on other things. It remains a priority to me as my Father is stll alive, and he is the one that asked me to search for him. His Father was Antoni Bochenek, and was born in the village of Stary Skalat in 1903, on June 1. I found the Birth and Marriage records from that village using the Mormon database. Go to www.familysearch.org to find info on your parents. Most records are in Latin or Polish, but many translators can be found online.

We'll talk again. Good luck in your search, Maria.

Dear Sir/Madam:

I had started to research my family tree in November of 2004. I am resuming my search for other Bocheneks. I have started to compile some information. It would be very helpful if someone could suggest some websites where I can look for more information, or to share with me what you know about our family of origin.

My Grandfather, Antoni Bochenek came to Canada on May 3, 1930, and arrived at Pier 21, Halifax, Nova Scotia, CANADA, with his wife Anna Ziemba, stepson Joseph Dolhan, and son Theodore (Tadeusz).

Please contact me in case anything comes up.

Thank you.

Andrew Bochenek
Montreal, Quebec
June 21, 2005
I'm curious about this website. I happened upon it by accident, and I would like to find out if there are any descendants of Mary and Joseph Bochenek. They immigrated to the US from Poland in the early 1900's. Several of their children settled in the Philly area. My grandfather, John Bochenek, lived most of his adult life in Idaho after leaving the service. I don't have much more information about them to date. Can anyone help with this question? I hope this is an open forum. If not, I apologize for the intrusion. Thank you.
Oreana Bochenek Harless, Boise, ID

Although my great grandparents came from Poland. I love to hear from other Bochenek's also, the "Bochenek" name is not big in Michigan, although it is growing. My father is Daniel Bochenek, and has two brothers. Joseph and Robert.

I am from Wales, U.K. My father was Stanislaw Joseph Bochenek born Poland 15th March 2002. He lost sight of his family following WWII.

I have friends in Daytona, Florida, USA and I visit twice a year. There are a few Bochenek's in U.K. I am trying to trace these. I have a brother named after my father living close by.

My name is Maria Anne Bochenek and I was born on 23/12/1952 in South Wales to my father and my mother Doris Anita Bochenek date of birth 2nd October 1917. Sadly mum and dad have passed on but I now have grandchildren. Hope this info is of help to you and if you have any info to help me. I know we have relatives living in North Poland at the big Port of C (can't think of the name). I have lost touch because my sister has the records and there is a very serious problem with my sister.

Came to US in early 1900's. Not sure which port. From what I am told family had a large meat company. When be arrived he droped the C so it's now bohenek. I know its not much but anything might help. Thanks. Ron

Beth Ann, I hope you got my other e-mail. I have info on your gfather Emil Bochenek. I believe he was my uncle (my mothers brother) born 6 Jul 1924 in Chicago, Cook County, IL to Walter Henry Bochenek and Stella Veronica (Mack) Bochenek. The family moved to Robinson Twp. Ottawa County, MI in 1927 where the rest of the siblings were born. Emil was in the WWII. My father tells great stories of their youth, fast cars, adventures, and mischief. Your gfather Emil died young. But my sister currently lives in a house Emil built which is next door to the old homestead where Emil's youngest brother Walt still lives and farms. Emil married (1) Joshephine Arbogast then (2)Bonnie Stygstra. Bonnie is a sister to Walt's wife Dorthy. I don't remember much of Uncle Emil, I remember seeing the boys at a couple family reunions, but otherwise haven't kept in touch well. Please contact me for more info. Betty

Martha,
Thank-you for responding so quickly. I was so excited to think we are getting a connection. I think we are in the same time period. My gfather was Walter Henry Bochenek born 15 nov 1892 in Poland. He was a taylor in Poland and Chicago after he came to USA in 1907 but some of his siblings stayed in Poland. His father (Jacob) was a coalminer in Banger IL. I don't know when he came to USA except that it was after his son Walter came over. Jacob's wife was Mary Karasz. I'm looking for a Jacob that would have been born around 1860-1870 in Poland. Your ggm Myriam was born in 1868 wasn't she? My mother said her family was from Czestochowa. My family is Catholic but it could have changed over the years, who knows? Maybe thats why he fled to the USA.
Yesterday was my first time in this web site. It is really great to make contact with other Bochenek folks. I've been dabbling in our ancestry for about 25 years putting bits and pieces together but haven't been able to invest the time to do good, deep investigating. If I can find any more on Jacob I'll be sure to let you know. Please keep in touch. Check out flandersfarm.com it's not fancy but it tells a little more about me.
Betty

Betty,

I show my Jacob Bochenek as having married someone named Chaya -- they had a son Max and a daughter Mania. I don't know if any of these folks made it out of Poland before the war. There is a family legend that Mania was a doctor who went east into Russia afterwards. Are your Bocheneks Jewish?

Thanks for responding,
Martha

Bettye,
I recently found out that I do have relatives in the Detroit area. One that I know of, his name is Ken Bochenek, he is an Anestesiologist. I was told he was a distant cousin. Thought I'd let you know!!

Bochenek name is big in OHIO!

I've seen alot of other states mention in the post messages...but none from Dayton, Ohio. My Grandfather is Henry Bochenek and his father was Alexander Bochenek and mother was Maryanna. They both were emigrants from Poland also. When finally making to the US they chose Dayton, Ohio to plant their seeds.
And from the nine children they had together the family has grown immensely. Curious to see if any connection to the other states spoken of?
