Hi,

I am also researching the Bocian side. Mary is my great-grandmother's sister. My great-grandmother was Victoria Bocian. Mary and Victoria had other siblings: Florianna, Kattie, Stanley, Frank, and Stanislava. Florianna (Flora) married John's brother Joseph.

Mary's father's name was Ludwig/Ludwick/Lewis and her mother was Josephine/Jozefa. Josephine's mother's name was Maryanna Malkouska.

Of course all Polish names have a million variations. I am stuck at Ludwick Bocian and also from Josephine's parents side. I would love to get any/all information that you have.

Exerpt from her death certificate:
Name: Mary Jureuisz
Titles and Terms (original):
Death Date: 19 Jan 1923
Death Place: Chicago, Cook, Ill.
Gender: Female
Marital Status:
Race or Color:
Age: 38
Estimated Birth Year: 1885
Birth Date: 29 Aug 1884
Birthplace: Chicago, Ill.
Father: Ludwik Bocian
Father's Titles and Terms (original):
Father's Birth Place: Poland
Mother: Jozefa Malkouska
Mother's Titles and Terms (original):
Mother's Birth Place: Poland
Occupation:
Residence:
Street Address:
Spouse: John Jureuisz
Spouse's Titles and Terms (original):
Spouse's Birthplace:
Burial Date: 23 Jan 1923
Burial Place:
Cemetery: Holy Cross
Informant:
Additional Relatives:
Digital Folder Number: 4204755
Image Number: 1720
Film Number: 1877163
Volume/Page/Certificate Number: rn 1652
Hi! Thanks for your inquiry. I have a list of the children that Mary had and there was no Thomas. Boczan or Bocian was her maiden name and she married a Jurewicz. Mary's dad's name was Ludwick but that's as far back as I can go. I would bet that they were distantly related but I don't see a direct link. :)

Hello,
My name is Thomas Boczan. My family was in the Toledo, Ohio area. My great grandmother was a Mary Boczan. She may have been born in the timeframe you were looking for. I believe she died about 25 years ago? My grandfather Thomas, and my father Thomas both lived in Toledo and all were buried there. My father also had a sister named Betty, who married a Frank Kubovich. They lived in Wauseon, Ohio. Both my father and Betty Kubovich died within the last 10 years.

Dear Geoffrey,

My name is Didier Goffart. I’m the son of Sarah Gedilah Bociau, daughter of Jan Joseph Bocian and Laja Bloder.

My mother told me that her father had left for Great Britain at the beginning of World War II and her parents had never seen each other again. Around 1963 my mother did see her father in London. She still remembers to be received very kindly by Jean Bentley, who informed her in 1976 that Jan Joseph Bocian passed away.

Lately she (75 years) is wondering what happened with her father’s family, so with the little information she had given me, I think I found you.

Well, we hope you are doing fine and look forward to receiving news from you.

In case you read this message today, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy new year in good health.

Best wishes,
Didier, Nardi (my wife), Hugo (8 years) and Simon (6 years)
I last posted a message to this message board a few years ago.

Happily, I discovered a "new" cousin through the posting of my message.

I am however, still seeking information and contacts from related BOCIANs.

A BOCIAN married a KLEPFISZ in Goworowo, which is in Ostroleka, Poland.

I don't have a year, but my guess is the early 1900s.

I've been told repeatedly that all KLEPFISZ (and variant spellings) are related.

I'm very interested in finding out about the BOCIAN connection to my family.

Just as KLEPFISZ has variations in spellings, my guess is, that BOCIAN might, as well.

Is any of this info. familiar?

Please post a message here, if so, and/or please e-mail me at: SrhLsr@netscape.net.

Thank you!!
Ms. Lasry:

I've never heard of the "Bocian connection", but I am a Klepfisz, too. My father (nee Jakob Klepfisz) immigrated to the US from Warsaw in 1913 at the age of 19. He changed his name to Jack Fisch and that was the name (Fisch) that I was hatched with. After both of my parents passed on I changed my name to Jackson (as in son of Jack). Irena Klepfisz, of whom you've doubtless heard, is my 3rd cousin (her father was my father's first cousin). Your original message is nearly 14 months old, but if you're interested, I would like to correspond (I live in L.A., by the way.)

Re: Bocian Family Name

My father, JOSEF BOCIAN (deceased in 1976) was born in 1898 in Kharkov, Russia,( now Kharkiv, Ukraine ). His father's name was Leon Bocian and he was married to Lilie Snadowie.
As a Red Army conscript, my father was captured in Poland in 1920 during the Soviet Russian - Polish war, and he escaped to Germany. He could not return because captured Soviet soldiers were regarded by the Communists as deserters, and were usually shot or sent to gulags if recaptured.
He then lived in France and Liege, Belgium, before escaping the Nazi invasion in 1940. I believe all my father's relatives were killed during the Nazi offensive in Russia .
My father tried to get to New York/ Boston to join relatives, who had changed their name to Banks. The ship, out of Bordeaux, France was arrested by the Royal Navy, and my father was interned in Liverpool, UK for a short time and then released to work in London.
He met and married my mother, Jean Bentley in 1943, and I was born in 1945. I grew up and was educated in England, and am a dual UK/Canadian citizen. Since 1968, I've been living in Canada and working as a city planner . I am married with a teenaged son and daughter here near Edmonton, Alberta.

I know that Bocian means "stork" in Polish, but it may also be a corruption of the Ukrainian words "without shoes". The name Bocian is very common in Poland, and in the Midwest USA, and there are a number in Germany& Austria, Czech Republic & Slovakia. There is a Bocian listed in the Brussels, Belgium phone book9 (I was there last month), as well as my mother's in the London,UK diectory.

If anyone has any further info' on the name, or may be a relative, please e-mail me.

Geoffrey Bocian
