Hi Stephanie:
As this is an old message....I hope you will receive it. Unfortunately, Elise Bode died 18 Sept 2010 so I hope you got a chance to meet her. Taggart and Lillian Northrup. Elmer Taggart was the son of William Taggart and Ida Sherwood. Ida Sherwood was a sister to my ancestor, Milton Homer Sherwood. If you are interested in more detailed info on the family..... you can write to me offline at:
relativeroots at yahoo dot ca
Cheers
Penny

Bode from Prussia

My Great Great Grandfather Christian Frederick Bode Sr. was born in Berlin (Prussia) Germany, abt 1821. He immigrated to the USA with his brother Charles around 1853.

As the family tale goes, Fred and Charles left Germany to keep from being forced to continue studies for the priesthood.

Their port of entry into the USA is yet unknown, although New Orleans is most likely. They first settled in Murta Arkansas, Charles went on the St. Louis MO.

C.F. married Zepporah Mae Glasscock. Some old family notes say that they met and married in Germany, others say their meeting and marriage took place in the USA. The unverified information I have found online does point to the meeting and marriage taking place in the USA. If I could only find their port of entry documentation, that might solve the puzzle!

His mother's maiden name is Kroeger.

Looking forward to learning more,
Christian A Bade or Bode

My great-grandmother was born Sarah M Bade or Bode in Bartholomew county Indiana 2 May 1895. It lists her mother as Mary Dancy and her father as Christian A Bode. I found their marriage record in Marion county Indiana for 27 Sept 1894. It gives his approx birth year as 1868 in Germany and gives his father's name as Anton Frederick Bode and his mother as Lue Marg. His wife was remarried by 1898. Sarah listed in one of the censuses that her father was born in Bremen, Germany. But I cannot find him in any records. I wonder if his didn't immigrate here and die before he was on any censuses. Either way, I hope these names may ring a bell with someone who can help me find out what happened to him and who his family was. I'm not sure if his last name is Bade or Bode even. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Lois,

I am wondering if you can help me? My great great grandmother's name was Ernestine Sophia BODE (born about 1848) and on her birth certificate it says that her parents were: Carl Friedrich BODE and Christine Wilhelmine PAPE. All I know is that Ernestine was born in Evangelisch Kirche, Eisebergen, Westfalen, Prussia.
Using family search, I have discovered that it is very probably that both Carl and Christine had several children including a Heinrich Wilhelm BODE (1842) and Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm BODE (1844). There are also other children, however, it they are labelled as 'girl' or 'boy' so it's unclear.

Please let me know as this is a very interesting story behind Ernestine's immigration to Montreal, Canada.

Per your post below and per your remembrance, you said your grandfather and his twin brother married twins also. What were the names of the twins they married? I am still trying to find out our relationship. My Dada Herman who passed on 12/1/09 always mentioned "Aunty Anna Bode" very fondly.

I'm am looking for information about my great grandmother, Maria Bode, who migrated from Hesse Dramstadt about 1872 ro Cleveland, Ohio. She married George Gessner, also from Hesse Dramstadt, about 1882, and after George Gessner's death, Frank Duberow. She lived in Cleveland from 1872 - 1910, and afterwards Erie PA to her death about 1920. Maria was born July 8, 1858 in Hesse Dramstadt, I presume, because she indicated in Federal Census records she and George were from there. I'd appreciate any help.
You can write directly at Rodger@aol.com.

These are the Bodes who married into my family. Emma Bertha Braun, b San Francisco, to Augustus Braun and Magdalena Hoefler, whose family was in NYC. After Emma's parents died, she moved to NYC and married William H. Bode, son in census you posted. He died in a few years, and Emma eventually returned to California where she died in the 1940s. Are you still fishing for Bodes? Found out anything more yet? I would like to know Susan's maiden name.

Re: Joseph Bode in Germany

My James Patten was born in Sussex County New Jersey on 05 Aug 1793, and died in Breckenridge, Caldwell County, Missouri on 30 May 1871. I think he was the father of John Kraft Patten who was born in Dyberry, Wayne Co., Pennsylvania on 12 Nov 1831 and died in Des Moines, Polk County, IA on 17 Jun 1917. He was my first husband’s great-grandfather.

I have Katherine Bode born Abt. 1802 in Sachsen, Germany. She married James Patten Abt. 1823 in Dyberry, Wayne Co., Pennsylvania. I do not have a death date/place for her.

I have as her parents Joseph Bode who was born on 12 May 1777 in Losse, Witzenstein, Germany and Anna Elizabeth, of whom I have no further information. I have no death date/place for Joseph.

I have Johann Elert Bode as a possible father to Joseph Bode. Johann was born in Hamburg, Germany in 19 Jan 1747 and died on 23 Nov 1826. He was married to Johanna Christiane Lange, 1754-1782.

I hope you can add to and/or correct my information on the Bodes. I would appreciate any information on ancestors of Joseph and Anna Elizabeth as well as any further information on James Patten’s ancestry.

Thank you very much.
I have a lot of info on Joseph Bode and the Pattens. Which of the Pattens did you descend from? I came through Anne Elizabeth Patten who married Luke Cass and William Coates. William Coates was my ancestor. Please be a little more specific about what you'd like and I'll try to oblige. Do you have any info on where James Patten came from? My theory is that he was born to John and Mary Patten, who were in Texas twp, Wayne Co. PA in the 1840's. But I haven't proven it yet.

Louisa Killner (Killmer?)-Bode death, NYC, 1907

Hello All,

I had hoped this would be my Louisa Bode, but not so. Hope she belongs to one of you:

NYC Death Cert #33790 for 1907
Louisa Bode, age 57 yrs., 10 mos., 13 days died at 142 E. 86th St., on Oct 20, 1907 of gangrene of the left foot, diabetes and septi (can't read rest, but assume it's something about going septic from the gangrene). Shows her as a married housekeeper, b. in Germany to Gottlieb Killmer or Killner and Louisa (can't read last name - so much of the writing on this D.C. is blurred)both b. in Germany. Shows she had been in the US and NYC for 19 years. She was buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

NOTE that this particular Louisa is not related to me, nor do I have any further information on her.

Best Wishes,
Judy Herbert

Bodes in Texas

I live in Texas now and my maiden name is Bode, but my dad's family was from Youngstown, Ohio. I am curious if any of the Bodes in Texas whose ancestors came directly from Germany to Texas are related to me. Two of my dad's cousins researched our family and I have put their research online in a WorldConnect tree. This is a pointer to my great-grandfather who was the immigrant Bode.

http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=bode_bi...

He was born in Grandenborn, Hesse-Nassau but some of the family members lived in Hersfeld (now Bad Hersfeld) after they left Grandenborn. The oldest known Bode ancestor was Johann Georg Bode b 14 Feb 1663/4 in Willershausen, d 15 Feg 1723/4 in Grandenborn.

Beverly Bode Howard
Austin, TX
