This information was taken from an article in the Deep South Genealogical Quarterly, February 1968, entitled "Spain and Mobile" by E. Herndon Smith, Mobile Public Library:
"Under Spanish rule much property changed hands. A few of the old French grants remained. Mon Louis Island remained in the possession of the heirs of Nicholas Baudin. He was neither interpreter, pilot or surveyor, but was awarded this estate for other reasons. He had married Francoise Pollet and Iberville had married Marie Pollet. Nicholas Baudin (Beaudoin) and his brother, Michael, the Jesuit who was excommunicated, were the sons of Gervais Beaudoin, a French physician who had settled Quebec.
"The colonists who came from Canada differed in some respects from those gathered from the towns and villages of France by the John Law Company. They loved the woods and the water and built their homes on the bayous or near the bay. Those from France preferred the sights and sounds of the streets of Mobile and New Orleans. They became shrewd in business transactions, more sophisticated in manners. The courier des bois roamed the wild lands, and far from civilization, mingled and mixed with the Indians."

Miles Womack has information (from Joan and Anabell Newman) stating that Gervais Beaudoin was a physician from France who settled in Quebec, Canada, then in Mobile, Ala.
15 minutes ago · Like

How did he come to get this huge grant of land in Mobile? I have that Nicholas was born in Tours in Lourraine, Dept. of Indre-et-Loire, France. Any information you could provide would be very helpful.

My family is from Montlouis sur Loire, my mother who is 88 still lives there and I visit every two years. I presently live in Mexico but I went to the States in 1970 , to Mobile Alabama and got married in 71, you will not believe this, we rented a house in Bellefontaine Alabama on the Fowl river and were directly accross from the original settlement of Montlouis Island.
I met people there who spoke some type of old French since there was no dialect in that part of France, their dialect became the "king´s French.
In these days there was not internet so I never looked into the connetion between the two Montlouis. I will take that story with me to their city hall when I go back in May 2012.
Talking about a small world. The name Bodin is very comon in the area but I will try to see if any of the old families know anything about this story.
Fascinating.
By the way there are comedies produced in France called Les Bodins and one of my cousin is the set designer......
I never heard of Miragouine but again it is a word from the area and I will try to find something out.
Brigitte

Hi, I was perusing ancestry.com and came upon your question. Gregoire's parents were Jean Louis Bodin and Franciose Doiron. The farthest back that has been researched is to Pierre Bodin born in France in 1715. The Louisiana Bodins started with Jean Louis. My mother is a direct descendent of Pierre Bodin. I hope this helps. I will try to find out if there is a link between Pierre and Nicholas. My aunt has been very involved in researching her father's family.

I know that Fanchon was purchased from my 6x great grandmother Francoise Paille, but I have no knowledge of her ancestry. From the information I gathered, Fanchon was purchased in Mobile, Al. Anyway Francoise Paille Bodin came to Louisiana to help care for Andre and Marie Anne Josephe Boutte's children. Francoise Paille was the daughter of a Nobleman by the name of Francois Pollet de la Pocatiere. There is a town near Quebec,Canada that he founded. There is quite a bit of information about Pollet on the Wikipedia website. Anyway, Pollet married Marie Anne Juchereau who descended from Nicolas Juchereau Sieur of St. Denis and Marie Therese Giffard. Giffard was the daughter of Robert Giffard de Moncel. Also, her grandparents were nobleman Jean Juchereau du Maur and Marie Langlois. Anyway, these people were of Perche ancestry, and were the first settlers of Quebec. Due to My 3x grandparents being 1st cousins. I am related to these noblemen double time. Francois Paille's uncle Louis Juchereau was the founder of Natchitoches, La. and he was the owner of the famous slave Coin-Coin. She had obtained a massive amount of land along Cane river and was the foremother of the wealthy Metoyer clan. I really don't know how Francois Paille met my forefather Nicolas Baudin/ Bodin. But they really helped populate the Mobile area. Their son Louis married Marie Louise Laurendine. She was the daughter of Pierre Lorandini/Laurendine and Marie Anne Fourchet. I read an article in a local magazine that legend has it that every tenth person you meet on the streets of Mobile is a descended of Pierre. Anyway, you can find out about these prominent people on Wikipedia and Dictionary of Canadian Biography on line.

Sherri Smith

Charity,
I know that Andre Claude Boutte purchased Fanchon from his mother in law, Francoise Paille Bodin, who was the widow of Nicolas Bodin dit Margouin, sometimes in the year of 1760 and at the time Francois Paille was residing in Point Coupee Parish. I think that the name of Fanchon was Francoise, and she was a slave of Francois Paille, who was the widow of Miragouin. Fanchon was the mother of five children of Andre Claude Boutte, Rosette Boutte Frilot, who was the wife of Claude Frilot and Claude Frilot was the son of Micheal Frilot, which surname fo Frilot was spelled Frilloux and the Frilloux family is from ST. Charles Parish, Louisiana, then there was Louis HIlaire, Pierre, Andre Claude, Junior and Phillpeau.
Try looking on google and searching French Canadians and you may find the website there or type in French Candian Genealogy websites and see what comes up.
Hope this helps,
kitty

Sherri,
I am deepy appreciative for your answering my query and I am amazed at the information about Francois Paille, who was the wife of Nicholas Bodin dit Miragouin. For years, I have been researching both, Nicholas and Francoise, and trying to connect Nicholas Bodin's Bodin family to the Bodin family of Gregoire Bodin, who lived in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana. From my research, I find both, Nicholas and now Francoise, very, very amazing people. It is not wonder that one of their grandsons was Jean Lafitte, the pirate, and another grandson was Pierre Lafitte, who masterminded the whole masquarade and operation of the colorful brothers Lafitte. Actually, Nicholas and Francoise are some of the oldest settlers in Mobile. I know that by the year of 1760 that Francois Paille, who was then the widow of Nicholas Bodin dit Miragouin, was living in Pointe Coupee Parish, Loiusiana, and ironically there is a little town called, Miragouin, located just over the I 10 spillway going towards Baton Rouge, La from Lafayette, La. I wonder if that is not the place of her plantation. Then probably after the death of her daughter, Marie Ann Josephe Bodin dit Miragouin, who was the wife of Andre Claude Boutte, Francoise Paille is found livinging in New Orleans in the French Quarter with her son in law, Andre Claude Boutte, and his five sons, I think it is very proable to say that Francoise Paille came to live with the Boutte family to help raise the youngest son, Jean baptiste, after the death of his mother and also to run the Boutte household. Also, in the year of 1760, Andre Claude Boutte purchases a slave woman from his mother in law, Francoise Paille, and that slave woman, who was named Fanchon, and the real name of the slave woman was Francoise, became the mistress of Andre Claude Boutte and bore him four sons, Claude, Hilaire, Pierre, and Phillpeaux, and one daughter, Rosette, who became the mistress of Claude Frilot.
Also, the Juchereau family, which I am also familar with is related to the first Spanish Governor, don Antiono Ulloa as Ulloa married one of the Ramon girls, whose sister was married to Louis Juchereau, and the Juchereau family also goes by the name of St. Denys. And the Juchereau family is also related to the DeBlanc family from New Iberia, Louisina and Nachitoches, Louisiana.
My name is Kitty Courts and I live between the towns of New Iberia and Jeanerette, Louisiana on a sugarcane plantation. I do research and write books, and this is how I got led on to all these people.
I will check out that web site on the Canadians, and I thank you so much for telling me about it.
Also, you might want to read this novel as it is about Louis Juchereau Saint Dennis, which is really spelled St. Denys, and his career and finding, meeting, and marrying Manuela Ramon, whose sister was married to Ulloa. YOu might find this novel very interesting, the title of the novel is "River Temptress" and the author is Myra Rowe, and it was published by zebra books, kensington publishing company, and it was copyrighted in 1987, and the ISBN # is ISBN 0-8217-2227-1. Hope that you enjoy the book!
Thank you so very much for answering my query, I sincerely appreciate it very much, thank you, kitty courts

My name is Sherri Smith, and I live in a suburb of Mobile. After researching my ancestry, I found out that Francoise Paille and Nicolas Bodin were my 6x great grandparents. After researching Francoise Paille, I was quite amazed. Francoise was the daughter of Marie Anne Juchereau who was the sister of Louis Juchereau (French Canadian Explorer who founded Nachitoches, La.). Also, Their grandfather Jean Juchereau Sieur de Maure help found Quebec, Canada. Francoise Paille was born in Brittany, France. I think Francois Pollet de la combe Pocatier was her father. There is a website that has the biographies of these prominent French Canadians.

does anyone know that if it is possible that nicholas bodin dit miragouin grandfather was Jean Bodin and if this family might not be originally from Germany, I have heard that there is Jewish blood in the veins of this Bodin family and that they migrated to Mons Louis, France from spain to escape persecution by the Spanish Inquisition and is it possible that they left Germany went to Spain and then left for France, Mons Louis looks like on the map that it could be leading on the roadway from Spain, and does anyone know who the father of Nicolas Bodin dit miragouin was? any information would be greatly appreciated, thank you very much

Was nicholas Bodin "Miragouine" a grandson of Jean Bodin, who was the famed French economist and one time couselor to the KIng of France? I know that Nicholas Bodin "Miragouin" was referred to as Sieur Miragouin and the name Miragouin means musketeer, and his plantation, which comprise lands of present day Bellingrath Gardens was referred to as Musketeer Plantation and was this a reference to Nicholas Bodin serving as a musketeer or a member of the household calvary of the KIng of France prior to coming to the Province of Louisiana. That may be the true reason why Nicholas Bodin was granted such a vast land grant of 14,000 arpents of land and Mons Louis Island, which is situated off the Coast of Alabama. And does anyone know if Nicholas Bodin dit Miragouine family was of the Jewish faith and migrated from Spain to France to escape persecution by the Spanish Inquistion. Any information would be very appreciated. thank you, kitty courts

I am searching for the names of the parents of Nicholas Bodin dit Miragouin, who was an early settler of Mobile, Ala, and he received a French land grant of 14,000 arpents of land which comprise present day Bellingrath Gardens and he was the husband of Francois Paille, and the father of Marie Anne Jospehe Bodin who was the wife of Andre Claude Boutte. I know that Nichoals Bodin claimed he was from Mons Louis, France. Is Nichoals Bodin dit Miragouin a grandson of Jean Bodin?
The name Miragouin, means musketter and the name of his plantation was called Musketter Plantation, prior to coming to the Province of Louisiana did Nicholas Bodin dit Miragouin serve as a musketter to the King of France? And that was the reason why he was given such as large land grant of 14,00 arpents of land then he owned Mons Louis island off the Alabama coast, were these French land grants as a thank you gift for being in the household calvary of the King of France? Please help

Luis married Marianne Roy Bodin/Baudan.

Hi Jana, this is your uncle Pat. Just checked census records for Hays, Ellis County, Kansas for 1880. There on p. 23 of 29 we find a Margarette Bodine (her reported age of 44 responds to Margarette B in 1900 census in SFrancisco. In 1880 census info she was married to Anders or Andrew Bodine, and had a son, George (I think) aged 4 yrs. G-pa Emil was born in August of that year, the census info was dated June. So we now have a more complete picture. I would like to do further research to verify the above independently, and will do so when we have time. Best Wishes. PB
