Hi there! I am researching the Bodle line and have John L Bodle, b. 1840 in Miami, Ohio, so I am thinking this may be his father. I have had no luck finding any mention of his parents, so this would be a great boon for me. I would love to see your tree. Mine is open, 1218bodle. We have a very limited family.
Thanks, Margaret Bodle

My great grandfather was Abraham Bodle b. 1814 in PA His wife name was Elizabeth Smith and they had a daughter named Elizabeth listed as 7 years old in the 1860 census. Abraham was a common Bodle name. Moved with his family to Licking County, OH likely around 1815 when his father, Michael, purchased land there. Abraham's first wife Elizabeth Smith Bodle died in 1855 and is said to be buried in Mr. Hope Cemetery, Berne, Indiana. She and Abraham married 15 Nov. 1834 in Knox County, OH.

This may not be the right Bodle. Their children are Nathaniel Smith Bodle, Elizabeth, Margaret, Asa Weston, Pembroke Somerset,Lucy E., Seraphina, and Youworhee who lived for a short period in Knox Co.

Gads! Why have I not seen this before???

You have my Daniel and Elizabeth Graham of NY.
I have that Daniel arived from Armaugh Co, Ireland in 1742. apparently that same year he married Elizabeth.. the "Widow Graham". Tho somehow I have her as the daughter of William Thompson.
The story goes that Daniel had 4 sons, Alezander?, John?, Patrick who went to Scotchtown and was 1st trustee of the Pres. Church in 1796 and also had the first REAL tavern.
4th son could be a William or another Daniel>>>
John Bodle born about 1778 could be the son of one of the above looking at the birth dates. John married Deziah Palmer in 1798 in the Goshen Pres. Church in NY. they had Jonathan Palmer Bodle (1804-1860) m. Diantha Rundle (1808-1894) Mar 8, 1828 and this is where my step-dad's line starts, They were said to have 11 children I have 9 and Joel Rundle Bodle is the 7th on my list. As far as I know only Joel and his older brother John came to California in the early 1900s. The rest stayed in the NY and PA area.
I'd love to see the connection you have with the original Daniel's sons.
Bev Webb cinnamon38@roadrunner.com

This is my step-dad's line. Melvin S. Bodle, son of Joel Melvin Bodle, who was the son of Joel Rundle Bodle and Angeline Goble. Joel Rundle Bodle was the son of Johathan Palmer Bodle and Diantha Rundle. She was the daughter of Joel Rundle and Anna Writer.

Children of Diantha Rundle and Jonathan Palmer Bodle:
1. Nancy Jane Bodle b. 1828 m. 1855 Simeon Lewis Shay
2. Amy Bodle b. 1830, d.1859
3. Samuel Bodle b. 1832 "never married"
4. Rebecca/Rebekah Bodle b. 1834 d. 1892 m. Morris Goble abt 1876
5. John D. Bodle b. 1837 d.1862
6. William s. Bodle b. 1839 d.1912 never married
7. Joel rundle Bodle b. 1842 in PA d.1987 buried in Laurel Grove Cem, Port Jervis, NY. married 1865 in Milford, PA
Angeline Goble b. 1939 d. 1931 buried in Laurel Grove Cem,
8. Daniel Bodle b. 8-1844 d.12-1844 age 4 1/2 months
9. Harriett Eugenia Bodle b. 5-1847 d. 6-1847

I start this line with Daniel Bodle c.1696 - c. 1786 coming from Armaugh Co, Ireland in 1742 he died in Wallkill, Ulster Co (now Orange) NY
He married in 1742 (just arrived??) to a Mary (or Elizabeth) Thompson daughter of William Thompson. S
She is also refered to as the widow Graham. 2 different women??

He, supposedly, had 4 sons.
1. Possibly Alexander b 1952
2. Possibly John
3. Patrick b. abt 1750, who in 1796 was appointed 1st trustee of the Pres. Church in Scotchtown, NY He also had the first real tavern in Scotchtown. And on the assessment roll of Apr 8, 1803 he had $700. in real estate and $43. personal.
4. John Bodle b. abt 1778 m. Nov 22, 1798 Goshen Pres. Church Deziah Palmer.
John and Deziah Bodle probably had several children but I only have the connection with Jonathan Palmer Bodle (1804-1860)and Diantha Rundle.
Bev Webb cinnamon38@roadrunner.com

Fantastic, great to hear from you and prepare to be even more excited. My great grandfather Arthur was born in Ballymisert, Belfast and i knew he had a brother Edward killed in WW1 and another brother, name unknown. He may even of had another brother name also unknown to me. I knew he had two sisters Annie and Margaret, but that is all i knew. Arthur was the youngest child of Henry and Annie(Trainor) and i was told that he was a head coachman for what was described as a place being like a castle somewhere in Belfast. I am very excited to know now thanks to you where and who he worked for.

Arthur had five children with Ivy Benham, Eileen, Doreen, Nora, Patricia and Desmond. Desmond was my grandfather and he emmigrated to Adelaide, Australia in 1969 with my his wife (my grandmother) and their three children. I cant believe that your grandmother died in Adelaide, can I ask when this happened? When did she come to Adelaide? I was born in Adelaide myself and all of my dads family still live there.

I would love to know more about your grandmother and indeed anything about Henry and Annie for it has been really hard trying to find any information with an Irish connection from here (Melbourne, Australia) and I have been looking for about 9 years now. I had forgotton that i had even posted a message on Ancestrty. I am so glad you replied

I recently found a parish record for Henry and Annie, it states that they were married on 21 June 1878 at Saint Annes Church of Ireland, Shankill, Belfast Antrim.

I would love to hear from you again. You can contact me (Mandy)directly at paul_mandy@optusnet.com.au
if you prefer.

Wow!

So excited to read your message though it was written several years ago I have recently started searching. My Grandmother was Margaret Bodle born at Ballymisert Northern Ireland she was the daughter of Henry Bodle and Annie Traynor. Her birth certificate shows that Henry was coachman -I believe this was to the Hendersons family of Norwood Towers Ballymisert (Lord Mayer of Belfast) I know that my grandmother Margaret had a sister Annie and I remember visiting her when I visited Ireland. Margaret married John Allen my grandfather. She died in Adelaide South Australia Hope to hear from you very soon

William Bodle - b 1810 in West Firle or Alfriston, Sussex?

All,
I need your help is trying to help break down a brick wall. Many years ago I became aware that there is an Alfriston in Auckland, New Zealand. I was able to ascertain that this part of Auckland was named by Dr George Edward Bodle after Alfriston, Sussex. However, George was born in Sydney, Australia in 1844 with no obvious links to Alfriston, Sussex. I was able to learn that George Edward Bodle was the son of George R Bodle and Anne Butler. They married in Sydney, Australia where George was serving in the army (80th Regiment of Foot). Descendants of George Edward Bodle have informed me that George Bodle was born in West Firle in 1812. They speculate that George's parents were William Bodle and Sarah Susan. William and Susan had 4 children that were christened in Alfriston - Mary (1801), Ann (1803), Jane (1805) and Anna (1806). All of these christenings are listed in the IGI. Additionally, William and Susan may have had three children born in West Firle - Susanna (1808), William (1810) and George (1812). These latter children are not listed in the IGI.

After serving with the 80th Regiment of Foot in Australia (on convict duty) and New Zealand (a whaling dispute), George Bodle was posted to India where he gradually moved through the ranks, becoming Paymaster. By 1853, he was in Ireland serving in a Depot Batallion. By the time that he retired (about 1870) he had risen to the honorary rank of Major. His military service can be traced through the Hart's Army list. The 1866 edition describes his military service thus: Major Bodle served in the 80th Regiment throughout the Sutlej campaign of 1845-6, including the battles of Moodkee, Ferozeshah, and Sobroan (Medal and two Clasps). Also in the Burmese war of 1852, including the capture of Martaban, operations before Rangoon on the 12th, 13th, and 14th of April, and capture of the Great Dragon Pagoda (with the storming party), and capture of Prome (Medal with clasp for Pegu). Interestingly, a picture of George's India General Service Medal can be found on the internet (http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&amp...).

George Bodle and Anne Butler had 4 children in Ireland. William Crawford Bodle (1853); Francis Joseph Bodle (1857); Robert Arthur Bodle (1856) and Mary Ann Grace Eliza Bodle (1862). Anne Bodle died in 1866. It has been reported that George was heartbroken and left Ireland, never to return. However, it is not known where he went to, although it is reported that he attended George Edward's wedding in London in 1870. However, he had a falling out with his children (they didn't agree with something that he had done). He hasn't been located in the 1871 census. In the 1872 Hart's Annual List it states that he took a commuted allowance in lieu of half pay. It is unknown when or where he died. Although George Bodle can't be found in the 1871 census, his three youngest children can be found in the 1871 census (as well as George Edward Bodle, his wife Eliza and their 3 month old daughter Annie). William Crawford Bodle has not been found in the 1871 census, although he may have been in India by that time. It is reported that he died in 1872 (drowned while taking a rope to a boat). Francis and Robert can be found in New Shoreham, Sussex, where they were attending the Protestant Grammar School (deceased mother being Catholic). Mary can be found in London (Tower Hamlets), living in the household of William and Priscilla Bodle. Unfortunately, Mary's relationship to William is not easy to read. Ancestry claims that it is daughter but that isn't correct. The reference for the census is Class: RG10; Piece: 575; Folio: 70; Page: 37. William Bodle had married Priscilla Brodrib and was working as an Exam Officer, HM Customs. He moved back to Alfriston, Sussex after Priscilla died in 1873. He remarried to a Catherine Willard in Dec Q 1874. William died in 1890 and Catherine died in 1894. His age fits with a William Bodle listed in the IGI as being christened in Alfriston, Sussex on 6 May, 1810 and being the son of Thomas Bodle and Hannah.

All four of George Bodle's surviving children (George Edward; Francis; Robert and Mary) emigrated to New Zealand in the 1870s.

That was a lot of background information, but it was necessary to set the scene for the questions that I need help with;

1) What was the relationship between William Bodle (m Priscilla) and Mary Bodle (daughter of William Bodle and Anne Butler)?
2) Who were the parents of William Bodle (b 1810 in West Firle) and George Bodle (b 1812 in West Firle)?
3) What happened to George Bodle after he left the army?

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Mark Milton

I'm descended from Hugh Bodle (b. 1803, PA) through his daughter Sara Bodle McArtor. I've got the census records 1820-1860 from Licking County, OH, and have Hugh being the son of Michael since they were the only Bodles living anywhere near Licking county at that time. I also believe that Michael is the son of Abraham, the grandfather of the Abraham that several postings have listed. Abraham is listed in the S. Huntington, Westmoreland Co, Pennsylvania censuses of 1790 and 1800. Michael was born in Pennsylvania about 1785 and Abraham is the only Bodle I can find living in the state in 1790. He is listed as receiving a pension from Bedford Co, PA from his service as a private in Captain John Boyd's Ranging company in 1781, (whatever that means), and also in another publication with the same information. (I have the references) Abraham also received a land grant from Pres. Jefferson in Ohio (BLM records) for his service in the war. I don't have 100% proof that this lineage is true, but I would like others to examine it and give thoughts.

Perhaps that explains why my grandfather was named Weston. His father named him after his brother Asa Weston. If Nathaniel was your great grandfather then we must be of the same generation as he was my great grandfather also. I was born in 1941. Do you have any redheaded people in your family? Nathaniel had a reddish hair and a long red beard according to cousin Hazel Bodle Paul. What was your maiden name (I am guessing Jan is female)..lol Thanks for the correspondence. I have been wanting to make a trip to Indiana. I have a couple of cousins (Bodle girls) who are also interested. I do have a lot of lineage on the family. Would you be interested? I have a cousin in Florida who has done a lot of research and put some pieces together. His mother was a Bodle (my aunt).
Doris

Yes that is the family line from my great grandfather Nathaniel. I am Harvey Weston Bodle's grandaughter. My father was William Edward Bodle. Grandpa came from Indiana where he married my grandmother Ida Jane Jackson. They went to Louisiana and then on here to Texas. I was raised in Port Arthur, Texas. Harvey Weston left here and went to Michigan where he worked at factory and was there when he passed away. He was in his 90's. He and my grandmother Ida had divorced. I sent an email to the lady that wrote and said she was Hazel and Edgar Paul's grandaughter. Hazel was my father's first cousin. She made several trips here and spoke with my aunt about family history.
Are you a Bodle?

Doris

I do remember seeing the name Abraham in some records. I believe we have a picture of Asa Bodle when he was older. Have a number of photos of Reese Bodle. I will check with my wife if she has any information on Abraham. We would appreciate any information on the Bodle's that you might be willing to share.

My grandfather was Harvey Weston Bodle; great-grandfather was Nathaniel Bodle; great-great was Abraham Bodle and g-g-g-was Samuel. Samuel came from Ireland to NY and family then spread down to PA and on into Indiana. My grandfather married Ida Jackson in Indiana and they then went to LA. and on down to Texas. Where are you from? and your family? My grandfather and grandmother divorced (I think twice) and he moved back to Michigan where he passed away in the 70's or 80's. I don't have my info here (I am at my office). Ironic that your father was a Weston. Please reply. Doris Mae Bodle Nelson- Southeast Texas

Josephine BODLE

Morning,
Tried to get a birth record for my grandmother, Josephine Matilda BODLE. As far as I can tell, she was born in Williamsport, PA (Lycoming County) on March 28, 1885. Her parents were Jerome Bodle and Elizabeth Fry Chapman, both born in PA. The Lycoming Register & Recorder office only has records back to 1893. Any ideas where to turn to next?
Thanks,
Bruce

Trolling for cousins

Afternoon,
Stuck at the usual brick wall, so I thought I's throw out a line. Looking for any cousins in PA (or elsewhere) that can help me with the CAMPBELL or BODLE name.

My father was Donald Sherwood CAMPBELL b:Mar 1912 d:Feb 1958, son of Herbert J. CAMPBELL b:Mar 1884 d:Feb 1919 & Josephine BODLE b:Mar 1885 d:Jul 1975. Herberts dad was Samuel W. CAMPBELL b:Mar 1861, his mother Adeline TAYLOR b:Oct 1858. Herbert had at least one bother and sister, Florence b: Apr. 1887 and Lester b: Nov 1892. My Dad talked about and I have pictures of an Aunt Julia. I don;t know if she was Lesters wife or not. I have many Aunts and Uncles that aren't blood related. I believe she had one son named Vince (maybe short for Vincent), but not sure.

On the BODLE side, my gmother was the 4th of 10 kids, 8 of which I know survived infancy. Her brothers and sisters were; Amelia Magdelane b:abt. 1877, Dora or Dorothy b:abt 1880 (believe she died before 1900), Mary Ellen b:Sep 1882, Lula b:Oct 1887 d:abt. 1967, Maud L b:Jun 1890, James Franklin b:Feb 1894 d: abt.1957 married "Virgie" had 9 kids or so, Margaret Anne or Annie b:Mar 1896, Jerry Nelson b:abt 1901, and Oran Frederick b:Sep1904 d:Feb 1968 married Blanche Moore. I have 5 kids for them.

Well now that I have laid it all out. Any information would be helpful.
Thanks....
http://home.cfl.rr.com/beachdaze (if you want to look at most of this info) or e-mail me papadoc@bigfoot.com

David H. and Susan Bodle of Indiana

Trying to determine the maiden name of Susan Bodle born 4 Feb 1835 at Ohio and died 24 Apr 1914 at Whitley Co., Indiana. She married David H. Bodle (1830-1909). They first appear in Noble Co., Indiana in 1860. By 1880 they were living in Allen Co., Indiana. By 1900 they were living in Lagrange Co., Indiana. Sometime after 1900 they moved to Whitley Co., Indiana. My current theory is Susan is the daughter of David and Magdalena (Kesler) Wurtsbaugh.
