Hi Stephen,
I just saw your post and was surprised that someone from Texas had a inquiry. My name is James Hicks and my mother was Hazel Bodwell, she had a brother named Clovis. There really isn't a lot I can tell you about the family, mom couldn't remember much, just that Clovis was in the service and when he got out he lived in Oklahoma (I think he also spent some time in WA state). She lost track of him after that. She couldn't tell us anything like was he married, did he have kids, etc. I don't know if this is your father or not. I have been interested in finding out more about her side of the family too. Oh, she had two sisters, Beulah, and I think the other on was Martha. Please let me know if this helps?
Sincerely
James

The Bodwells of Vinalhaven, Maine

I'm loosely related to the Bodwell family: Charlotte Marie Bodwell married my great-grandfather, Eugene Leslie Smith. A cousin I never met did extensive research and came up with a lot of information about the Bodwell family of Massachusetts and Maine and of the Bodwell Granite Company of Vinalhaven. Enjoy!

http://home.earthlink.net/~bbodwell/treepg/BodwellBlue.htm An article by Roger L. Gindle about the history of the Bodwell Granite Company.

http://quarriesandbeyond.org/states/me/me-stone_indus.html History of the Maine stone industry.

http://home.earthlink.net/~bbodwell/treepg/tree.htm History of the Bodwell family.

Hi chatterchit,
Well, you've given me some more great ideas. I have tried the genealogical society and the library but they haven't been able to find anything other than the owners names, no pictures. I would love to find a picture of the original home. I know the house was built in 1891. I will give the site you mentioned a try. I know one of the owners (Dumont) is the family of the Dumont Funeral Home. I was thinking of emailing them directly. What do you think??

Judi
Hmmmmm, our county posts photos of properties online, along with their assessments. You could try that. Also try Google maps.

There could be books published on various properties, too. See www.worldcat.org. Search town and county as subjects.

Also contact the local library, genealogical and historical societies. You can google those using either Nashua or Hillsborough County.

That's all I can think of right now...:)

Hi
I just wanted to let you know I did get your message and followed your advice about searching directories. I was able to get a lot of information from them on the families I'm interested in. There were 3 different families and the directories told me what years each family lived there and the family members. Your advice helped me a lot.
I'm still searching for pictures of the home. Any suggestions??

Thanks again

Judi

Hi chatterchit,
Thanks so much for answering my post. I will check out the directory, that is a good lead. I do have access to ancestry and have gotten the newspaper articles as well as the census and military. All have been a great success. Still would love to be able to get some pictures for my son. He has tried to restore the home to it's original character as best he can without having anything to go by. Any suggestions as to where I might be able to get old maps on line? I did find a couple on line today but couldn't find Lincoln Ave on any of them.

Judi

Newton and Clarence are listed in there, along with their occupations.

Also, do you have access to ancestry.com's Newspapers and Publications database? There are 369 articles in the Nashua Telegraph with Bodwell in them (1947 to 1977.) The first one I looked at was about Ida Bodwell's 91st birthday.

Joseph Bodwell, Mass. and Maine

I don't have any connection to this family but found this while doing other research. I am posting hundreds of these “blurbs” because I believe it helps to see our ancestors as people rather than just names and dates and, in some cases, it helps to place where our ancestors were during a certain period of time.

This entry is from the Bi-Centennial issue of the Rockland, Maine Courier-Gazette. It is an article entitled "Rockland - City of Lime, Granite and Fishing."

"The second kind of granite company provided large quantities of stone for building and other construction. Rockland's Bodwell Granite Company was incorporated in 1871 and named for its founder, Joseph Bodwell. Granite quarried by this company at Fox Island (Vinalhaven), Spruce Head and St. George was used in construction of such well-known edifices as New York's Brooklyn Bridge. Boston's Jordan Marsh and Company Building, the Pilgrim Monument at Plymouth, and the building which now serves as the Executive Office Building next to the White House in Wahsington, D.C.

These companies flourished form the years following the Civl War until early in the 20th century, when Maine granite was most in demand throughout the U.S. for paving, construction of public buildings, and fashioning of monuments."

I have Gov. Bodwell's obituary. It indicates that he was born June 18, 1818 in Methuen, Mass. His death was reported in the June 20, 1887 Courier.

Hi Gerry,

With regard to the linkage between Bodvel / Bodwell / Gwynne and Wynne, you might want to look at :

http://wbo.llgc.org.uk/en/s-BODV-EL0-1550.html

And also:

http://www.myrarities.com/myroots.htm

So things go quite a ways back. From what I understand, this could be quite accurate, as Welsh nobility was required to know their male ancestors back 7 generations or more, so the history is known. Who knows.

Anyway, if anyone can help make the linkage of Henry Bodvel and Henry Bodwell of Methuen MA, that would be much appreciated. Also any interesting Bodwell history is also great. Mail me at cbodwell@yahoo.com

Charlie

Hi Ms. Armstrong,

While at Bodvel Hall did you happen to hear anything about a Gwynne/Wynne or Ellis family? I am in the possession of a signet ring with a lion rampant and the inscription "gweithred a ddengis." Using Burke's The GENERAL ARMORY, I have easily traced my family to Ellis of Glasfryn, Carnarvon but, after that, figuring out where Gwynne/Wynne comes into the picture is a bit ore difficult. I was able to find a connection, via WELSH BIOGRAPHY ONLINE, that told me the Bodvels were also known as the Gwynnes or Wynnes and that their descent goes back to Collwyn ap Tangno, the founder of the fifth noble tribe of northern Walaes– all of which matches up with my research. If you happened to pick up any clues, please let me know at gerry.christmas@gmail.com . Thank you.
Gerry Chrismas, aka The Yuletide Kid

Bodwells & relatives

I have a copy of the KITH and KIN that lists all those who were at the 1902 Christmas reunion at Elgin Hall in Mt. Elgin Ont. I have connected all the Bodwells to Geoff Bodwell's Bodwell Family Lines except for three, all of Mt. Elgin. They are May Bodwell, Douglas Bodwell and Gladys Bodwell. Can anyone help to identify them?
Bodvel Hall

I just returned from visiting Bodvel Hall in Wales. There seem to be some cracks in the stone of the front facade, but considering it's more than 350 years, it's in amazing condition. I got several photographs. Don't know if we have the capacity to show some on the website or not. Also discovered Coed (Wood in Welsh) Bodvel down the road from it. The house there is about 200 years old. It must have been part of the original family holdings with that name.

It seems that my line comes from a younger sister to your Abigail, Sarah Bodwell (1694-1737). At some point, I would like to explore what you all have on this line.

Eventually, a descendant marries into the Thomas Dow lineage (also my direct ancestor, which I am currently working out from).
