Boeck, Karl - Rindel, Hesse

This excerpt was taken from the Beloit Daily News, Beloit WI from the on this date column on Jan. 6, 1912.
Throughout the untiring efforts of Postmaster George Seegmiller, the name of the young German who was killed near Clinton (WI) early in October has been learned. His name was KARL BOECK, and he lived in Rendel in Hesse and had planned to bring his sweetheart to America as soon as he found a job and could afford to marry and take up housekeeping. He had stayed in Indianapolis and then was befriended by a German speaking man who got him a job. He went to Minnesota and decided to return to Indianapolis but was struck and killed by a train as he walked the rails near Clinton. The notebook he carried led Seegmiller to Paul Russe in Indiana and after some confusion, a postcard was found in the notebook and the Rev. P. Pilcher of Beloit wrote to Boeck's sweetheart. Broken hearted, she responded by mail confirming that the dead man was indeed her intended cousin.

Hope this helps anyone searching for this man. More details may be available in the actual newspaper for that date. available through the Beloit Public Library in Beloit. WI. Judy Nichols, Beloit Historical Society volunteer.

I have a lovely photo of Lizzie T. Boeck (born 1887 Germany). The photo was taken in Mankato, MN. The 1910 census says she was the daughter of Melia L. Boeck (mother), born 1864 Germany. Lizzie's siblings were: Lena A., Clara M., Anna M., and Bernhard R., all born in MN.

I would like to return the photo to her family. If you are related to her and would like to have the photo, let me know. I can send a scan.

Patricia
prck97@aol.com

If you'll give me an e-mail address, I'll send it to you.
Patricia
prck97@aol.com

Taken from the Dallas Morning News, 21 May 1896

Boeck - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, May 19 - Prof. Bunus Boeck, at one time private secretary to Gen. Louis Kossuth, and in 1852 (looks like - hard to read)an intimate friend of Victor Hugo and Victor Cousins, and known as the "Father of the Poles in America," is dead of heart failure. He was 76 years old. During the uprising of Hungary, Boeck became a major in Kosuth's army and afterward the great leader's secretary. Prof. Boeck was twice married. His widow is a member of the old New York family of Lounsbury, who are closely connected with the family of ex-Senator Platt.

A revision of what I just wrote-- after reading another message on this board, I found out there the maiden name of Gustav's wife, Pauline-- GUTZMER.
I should also clarify that Julianne WITT, mother of Gustav and Minnie, re-married. Her name as she emigrated and died either in North Dakota or MN was KOTTKE (she is said to have died 12 Jan 1907). Thanks for any further help.

Re: Gustva Boeck [Gustav Johann Boeck]

Wow, I'm really finding old e-mails now. I hope you've found out lots more since you wrote. I know about "Gustva" (born Gustav Johann Boeck 8 April 1866 to parents Johann Eduard Boeck and Julianne Witt). His birth place was not "Klockcom" but Tlukom, Wirsitz County, Posen, Prussia, later called Gross Elsingen during German Empire days. The town is southwest of the major city of Lobsens (now Lobzenica, Poland). "Russian guard" should probably be "Prussian guard". He lived there during Prussian, not Russian, rule. I hadn't heard he deserted or entered through Canada. I will have to check Canadian ports for him. Thanks for the maiden name of his wife. I have found the family in the censuses from 1895 (Elizabeth, MN) to 1930 (Kopiah, Lewis, WA), but have incomplete info on the various children. If you have an obituary for "Gustva" or anyone else, I'd appreciate it. Pauline wasn't married at 15 but more like 17 according to census records (1900 & 1910- 34 and married for 17 years by 1910).
See my note on this message board about Minnie Boeck, his younger sister (b 1868), who married Gustav Krause and resided later in life at Tenney, Wilkin Co., MN. I will try to reach you with your old e-mail but probably it won't work anymore. Hopefully, you will see this.

Are you still looking for more? I see you have put up a family tree on Ancestry.com. I know Minnie's pedigree (to a certain extent), her death record and obituary, and what happened to her children, at least as much as I want at this point.
Do you know about Minnie's brother Gustav Johann Boeck (b 8 Apr 1866, Tlukom, Wirsitz Co., Posen- d 11 June 1952, Centralia, Lewis Co., WA) and his wife Pauline? What was her maiden name? I have incomplete info on his whole family.
Minnie was Wilhelmine Boeck, b 10 Nov 1868, Lischkowo (later Witzleben), Wirsitz Co., Posen, and died, as you probably know, 10 April 1939, Wilkin Co., MN.
I also know Minnie's other siblings, parents (Johann Eduard Boeck and Julianne Witt). Do you know where Julianne is buried-- North Dakota (Richland Co.)? She emigrated with two daughters Amalia and Ida in 1893 and, from one source, died 1907 somewhere. She is last listed with the Manthe family in Hankinson in 1900.
Thanks for any help here. (Julianne was a sister to my g-grandmother Ernestine Witt, 1845-1882).

The name is technically Belgian, but is a German last name, because Belgium used to be part of Germania and spoke German. I think it was originally spelled Böck, but im unsure.

Sometimes people from parts of Germany also pronounce that letter like a schwa "e" before an "r" in English, so a name like Goethe would sound like "Gerta", hence why many people pronounced the WW2 General's name "Gering" when spelled in English as "Goering". Also, on Bock, my wife has some in her family that tell it to have been "Boch" before the trip to America. Not surprising as an "h" and "K' can look similar to a busy port agent.

Would like to know anything about him and his descendents. Did he die in Eau Claire? If so where is he buried? Any information on this family is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time.

I have a friend that speaks fluent German. She said that in German there is another vowel - an o with two dots above it. I can never remember what she calls it - there's a name for it. Anyway, in English we do not have that vowel so the pronounciation of it is signified by following the "O" with an "E". I have found that in a couple records - old records in the 1800s that were handwritten with the O with two dots. Seems wierd though that you would find that in Germany. My friend says the closest she can describe the proununciation of the O followed by the E is something like the "OO" in Book.

I am trying to find information on a Dr Charles Boeck (Bock) who emigrated to New Holstein, WI in 1848. He was married to Caroline Grunert (Grunest) and had two sons and two daughters while still in Germany. His mother-in-law, Magdalena (Helena) and a servant, Henry Zapp also came over with them. My gggrandfather, Carl Bock, was listed as a servant in their home in New Holstein, WI in 1870. Do any of these names ring a bell with you?

was Magdalena Greasa married to Charles Greasa? Charles was born between 1862 -1865. My greatgrandmother Charlotte Griese (Greasa in the 1870 census St. Louis, MO.) is his mother. She married a Henry Griese and I don't know what happened to him. But she had two sons by him Charles and Henry Griese (Greasa). The spelling has been recorded incorrectly on the 1870 St. Louis, Mo census, it should be Griese. Charles worked for the railroad and moved to Moberly, MO. Any information would be of help. Thank You
BettyMcCafferty@charter.net

Oh Charlotte Greise remarried a Fred Franzer(Francis) also incorrectly recorded on the 1870 St. Louis, MO census. How I know is because my grandfather Julius Franzer and Emelie Franzer are my relatives. Julius had two have brothers Charles and Henry Griese and a stepbrother George Franzer.

A couple of points --

1. In German one used to attach the name endings -in or -en on women's names, Boeck (m) would become Boeckin (f) and so forth, say in the 19th C. and earlier. Modern genealogists often drop them when recording these names in their files.

2. a Bock (noun, no Umlaut) is a male goat (or deer, hare). It's just possible the pastor recording the event in his register was making a veiled comment for future readers. I saw an entry once for a woman whose forename was actually Gottliebe (God-love) where the pastor had written Goldliebe (gold-love). The possibility shouldn't be discounted!

THP

Hi

I believe Magdelinia was married to Charles Griese/Greasa who was my grandfather's Julius Franzer half brother by Charlotte Franzer's first marriage to Henry Griese in 17 Nov 1857. Her maiden name was Tiesmeier. I don't know what happen to her first husband. My dad didn't even know who his grandparents were until right before he died in Feb. 21, 2004.

He did tell me he remembered meeting his grandmother right before she died. He was just about six. He was born Oct 24, 1915. He told me that Charles was working for the railroad up in Moberly, MO. The rest I research ancestry.com and followed the 1870,1880,1900,1910, and 1920 census for these names. I don't know why the name changed or even why the census reflect Francis instead of Franzer up to the 1900. Charlotte was widowed as a Franzer. Henry Griese/Greasa lived with her up until her death I believe.

Lampe this is another interesting thing my gggrandmother was Mrs. Mary Lampe who married a Gottlieb Kunetmeier on 11 Oct 1849. Don't know much of the Lampe's.

I just read your message and another one about the train wreck outside Moberly, Mo.

Do you think these Griese/Greasa are related? Please let me know what you think or know.

Betty (Franzer) McCafferty

I'm sorry...I'm laughing at you. I guess there was a reason my German mother drilled us kids on how to pronounce German when we were very small. I've had native German speakers compliment me on being able to do it properly. Not too many Americans can if they didn't learn it when very young.
So, to get as close as possible, prepare yourself to say "book" and then don't let your lips protrude to an "ooooh" sound, tighten your lips into a little, round opening and say" "beuk" instead..
ha ha ha. :)

Re: Bock and Boeck, Interchangeable?

I discovered the same kind of thing just last night when reviewing microfilm from a couple of Bavarian villages...
Daughter was recorded as "Bokin" (with umlaut) at her marriage.
Her father is named s "Bock" (with umlaut) in other records in the parish.
Her birth record in another parish has her father as "Bockh" no umlaut.
Birth records of her siblings vary...Bockh, Bock (no umlaut) and Bock (with umlaut).

One has to remember that sometimes people were illiterate and the parish priest just recorded what he heard them say their name was. Hence you have variations to watch for!

Bock and Boeck, Interchangeable?

Many of us have encountered situations in our genealogy research where immigrants to the U.S. have made changes to the spelling of their surname, either upon arrival or within a generation or two. However, I have recently run across a situation which has me somewhat puzzled. I've been looking at German church records (early to mid 1800s) from the region of Prenzlau, roughly 50 miles north of Berlin. In one of the villages, Gross Spiegelberg, I noticed that in addition to the BOCKs that I was researching, there were also BOECKs. No problem--- until I ran across at least three entries where the father's name was BOCK, but the children were BOECK. I dismissed the initial encounter as an error, but three times seems to stretching belief!
Have others of you run across situations where the two names seem to be interchangeable, or was changed from one to the other? Should we all be looking for both versions in our research? Or was this just a quirk of the person (pastor?) doing the recording is these particular records? Thanks!
