Yes, I read the Will. It was first referenced in the genealogical research for the Earl-L-Bogan Family Tree that was a compilation of many years of work by Bogan descendants, genealogists and others as I noted in a previous posting. That tree is no long accessible on Genealogy.com. There are Will books in our own library that document the will and its content. I contacted the proper courthouse office in SC and obtained the information for myself. I cannot find my copies; so here is the reference. Source: Abstracts of old ninety-six, Abbeville District Wills and Bonds, County Court House in box 64, pack 1592, probated 03 May 1783. Will of James McElroy. Easter Bogan is named as "Mrs Easter "Hester" Bogan in the Will. -- dennis

Thank you for responding so promptly. I find it all very interesting. I am almost certain that Sylvester Hugh Bogan is my ancestor. I will be checking all the documentation I can find to confirm. Your information is very helpful. I would love to talk to you sometime and find out how you find the information you do. I am very new at this, and while I have found the LA State Archives very helpful, once my relatives are no longer in Orleans Parish, the information they have is slim. Also, I am currently limited to vital statistic type info. Please e-mail me at kcbell@gmail.com. You can also reach me at home 435-535-3115. I am no longer living in LA.

I am related to this family and know a little bit. The farthest back I know is Samuel Bogan who married Rebecca Unknown in Louisiana. They had Hugh Sylvester Bogan who married Charlotte Paine Williams' daughter in 1848. They had several children--among them another Hugh Sylvester Bogan. I think they moved from the Baton Rouge area to New Orleans. I descend from Charlotte who was widowed(James Young Williams) and then married my 2nd great grandfather, William P. Cox(e). Wm. P. Cox was married 4 times--his 2nd wife was Rebecca Unknown Bogan, and they had two children in 1839, 40, named William H. Cox and Samuel Cox. Then Rebecca died (1841) and he married Charlotte, and they had Benjamin Franklin Coxe. They lived in Baton Rouge (Port Hudson). This family had a small plantation called "Laurel Grove PLace."

Hi Patrick, I contacted you before on Genealogy.com about the VA. Bogans. I'm still trying to verify the parents of my gggrandfather ,John W. Bogan, married to Hannah Ginger and from Bath Co. VA. He was mentioned in the handwritten copy of the Bogan genealogy by Marion Wesley Bogan. On John's death certificate, his parents are listed as James and Betsy Bogan told by his youngest daughter Etta. Would you have this information? Another source has his parents as Andrew and Nancy(Unknown) Bogan. I hope you can help.

Thanks, Janice E. Bogan

HI, I've been trying to find out the names of my g-g- grandfather's parents. There seems to be a discrepency over this. I have a death certificate with "James and Betsy Bogan" and another descendant has "Andrew and, I think, Nancy Bogan." Can anyone provide more documentation on this? I would really like to be able to tie my family in with the Bogans of Botetourt, VA. in the mid 1700's. I have been trying to find out this info since the early 1990s. There is a hand written genealogy mentioning John W. Bogan, but not his parents.

Thanks, Jan Bogan

Sorry that I did not notice this message not being read until today. Wish the old bogan tree was still accessible on Familytree.com. However, I copied much of the information into my wife's tree. Those persons which completed a family were included. I did not go side ways because of space and time. Futhermore, reading all the side lines would be burdensome to my readers. Linda's family really was just interested in the direct line. But, I do have information on one of the Jane Boggan persons. She was born abt. 1765 and died abt 1845 in Greene Co, Alabama. Parents were Patrick Henry Boggan and Mary Penelope Dabbs. I have her in my tree. If you wish, you may email me at denlin1943@hotmail.com. I will then email you the genealogy report on her parents and siblings. I do not have her husband nor her children. One has to stop someplace and I did not go that far. -- dennis

Just maybe one of you Bogan/Boggan researchers will have info on my 5th grtgrandmother Jane Boggan married in 1781 to to William Wood in Orange County NC. They moved in 1783 to Anson County NC. There are several Jane
Boggans related to Patrick Boggan. Jane from Ireland married Holden Wade, Jane born in 1765 married Pleasant May.
My Wm Wood was born 1751 in Lancaster County PA. Part of the Anson County Boggans came thru PA.
Could one of you kind people have info on my Jane Boggan? She must have been born around 1760 and just possible her father was a John or William Boggan. Thanks for any help. I have so, so much Boggan research but can't find my Jane Boggan.
Note: The wedding license reflects Jane Boggan's witness was a man named "Cairns."
Doris June (Wood) Fulghum

I am doing research for a very good friend of mine from Bogan lines. Her family is listed as black, however her lineage came from the Aborigine's of Australia. So perhaps this is another thought to look at. Her family took the name of Bogan after entering this country and lived in oir around Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi before going north to Arkansas. Most listed as cotton farmers and and census as Blk. We can't seem to find hers either bef 1900 census in Arkansas. Line of Mose and Mollie Bogan. Mose listed as b. MS 1878

I am a desendant of James Bogan b 1805 in NC. He married Timmia Haney in Tn in the 1830s.Census show Timmy to be born in NC as well. They went to Marshall Co, Ms 1850 census, and on to Clark Co, AR in the 1850s. My ggrandfather was John H Bogan who died in 1897 in Texas. James Bogan died in 1859 in Arkansas. I am trying to trace James back to NC and Timme Hanie as well. Thanks Richard Bogan boganhome@aol.com

Thanks Dennis, Posted my Bogans. Have not added all yet, but thats what I know on my direct line. The 1850 census in MS has a Child Rebecca that may be a relative and not a child due to age. James and Timmia ,Timme were married in 1833 TN. Went from NC to TN to Ms and then to AR. Timme filed a Southern claims in 1873 but was denied because another son Jessie was a CSA soldier . She stated James died in 1859 in that report.

My great grandfather was Armstead T. Bogan *born 1855-1863) he was born in MS, but died in either AR or OK. My Grandmother, Frances Bogan Alverson (B1890) never knew any of her relative other than her father (my GGF) as her mother died in childbirth around 1895. He would never confide any details to her about her family. I think he may have even changed his last name. In researching, I suspect his last name could have been "Horn" Armstead came to Cedarville AR when my grandmother was just a little girl. Have you heard any stories about any of these people> curious>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

After by reply, I visited your family tree Boganhome. I did not find any bogan names. Perhaps you are posting into another tree. But if you will post to your tree the names you know then "hints" will show if there is anything in Ancestry that will help. Of course, each has to be checked out for documentation and if it is someone in your line. This makes finding information easier. There are a number of things on Ancestry that you can check to see where James may have lived in Tenn. and NC. Tax lists, land records, and other sources at the county level. I google counties in order to find things that are not on Ancestry. Tenn has good info and does most of the Eastern States. Try to find which Bogans were in NC in 1810 that had a male under ten years of age. Process of elimination helps me narrow down the field of choices. And the further back you go, the less people there are to wade through. Hope that this helps in some way.

The Bogan families that I have complied, settled in SC and two families came to Arkansas about 1858. After the Civil War they came to NW Ark from Red River Co, Texas. That line of Bogans is different than the North Carolina Bogans. A Patrick and William Bogan settled in NC and their descendants migrated into parts of Tenn, Ky, and one line went to Georgia or Alabama. I have not traced out any of those. William moved into SC and started his line. Patrick stayed in NC. I think he had all daughters; but I cannot be sure. William had several children before he moved to SC. So you have part of his line in two places. The time line here is 1700 to 1770. So if you can work back to 1750, you may be able to connect with one of those. Walter, Patrick, and William came from Ireland. It is believed by some that Walter went back to Ireland.
Okay, I just checked and Patrick did have one son, yes another William. The spelled their name Boggan. Patrick died in Orange Co, NC 24 April 1756. He was born about 1696 in Donegal, Ulster, Ireland. William & Jane Boggan had a son, William Patrick Boggan, Jr. 1752- 1816. Wm Pat. Boggan's family was very large; so it maybe that your James is one of his which was James W. Bogan(Boggan). But he was born before 1805. No dates on him; but the researcher has him as the second eldest of 9. There was a John Bogan born in 1805 to this family. Sorry I don't have an answer for you. One has to work back some times or come in through another family member. -- dennis

Bobby, sorry to just be getting back to you. As I have posted replies to others, I had missed how this worked.
Gus Bogan was one of the sons for Claud Bogan and Nora Sutton. Gus is a Baptist Minister in Arizona and is in his 90's. My wife spoke with him briefly in 2007. He did not have any information to share with us that would help. Most we already knew. I will be welling to share with you Claud Bogan's story. But for starters, he and Nora divorced in 1933-34 in Fayetteville, Washington Co, Arkansas. Nora raised the children and eventually remarried. From what we gathered from living members, Nora did not pass on much Bogan history. But Ellis Bogan was a semi-pro golfer in Fayetteville and owned the Paradise Golf Course. He died in 1980. His brother Wayne was also a golf semi/pro. There are numerous articles in the Northwest Arkansas Times about those men from 1940's to 1970's. Wayne died in 1963. They had one sister, Gladys.
Contact me at denlin1943@hotmail.com and I will try to help. -- dennis

Sorry for the delay; just leaning how this works. I do not have information on Little River. It could be that a later family moved to that area. We have not included all of the families that descended from the original trans-plants in Arkansas. Interesting you should mention the Price name. I have researched a few Prices for another local family. The search was limited to L.D. Price who died in 1894 in Oklahoma, Indian Territory. One of his sons, Lorenzo Dow Price died in Springdale, Akansas. His mother was a Middetlton/Midleton. Two of the sisters lived in Ardmore, Oklahoma. If this works or matches some of what you have, I can give a few more facts. -- dennis

I, too am researching a black family of Bogan.
My earliest ancestor to date is Shade Bogan,
my friends gggrandfather. He was born abt.
1813 in either Ga. or Va. & was married to
Annie.

ggrand father, Henry Bogan born abt.1855 in
Ga., married to Susie

grandmother, Anna Bogan born abt.1890 in
Ga., who later married Fleet.

father Hershal Bogan born 1913 in Ga.
married to Jessie Taylor, Terrell Co. Ga.

Most of this families descendants still live in
Lee, Sumter, Dougherty & Terrell Co Ga.

I found in the 1860 Slave schedule C.P. & John
Bogan, white men living in Jasper Co. Ga. with
over 40 slaves between the two of them.
I'm thinking my Bogans came from there but
haven't proved a connection yet.

Does any of this sound familiar to any Bogans
out there? Sure hope so. johnne
