Surnames: Bogdan, Bogdonoff, Bogdanoff

One more thing about the name Bogdonoff or Bogdanoff (with or without a "v").... Another tradition that I have heard about this name is that it (Bogdan) was also given to illegitimate children and foundlings, and that it translates to "God-given child."
Now that I think about it, it would not surprise me if another reason Jews would take this as a surname was because they considered themselves God's chosen people.
(God-given, God-chosen...?)
