Yes, the Bogdanoff's in my husband's family were Ukranian Jewish. They spoke Yiddish not Russian or Polish. They came to NYC about 1890- 1900. The original name was Bogdan and got changed to Bogdanoff using the Russian naming system. I have learned that Peter Bogdan was a Ukranian freedom fighter and many Jewsih people adopted his surname when the Russian government insisted they take Russian names in the 1800's after the Ukraine became part of Russia. So the family was only Bogdanoff since the 1800's. before that Jewish people in that area did not have Surnames --they still used the "son of -----" system with the surname changing in each generation. I have not found immigration info yet as Morris Bogdanoff seems to have used another man's passport papers - he bragged about that all his life-that the rabbi saved his life by giving him the false papers. This man had died before he could use the papers so they were given to Morris by the town rabbi. Once in NYC Morris started using Bogdanoff again. The family was socialist. What Morris did when he first came to NYC we don't know but once he accumulated some money he bought property and built apartment builidngs so he may have learned bricklaying at some point. During the Depression when he lost most of his money he moved to a rural area and ran a chicken farm - so he must have learned that in the Ukraine. Later he went back into building with his son David (my husband's step father) when this rural area became a NYC suburb. He named his daughter Doris. I would asume David is a family name. That is all we know. There are many Bogdanoff's in Pennsylvania and also in California according to census info. But we have never met anyone else with this name. Since this is a step father I didn't pursue it much--but sometime when I am in the NYC arcihves I'll look for a marraige certifcate for Morris. I put the message up as a favor to Morris sister Doris--but she too has now passed away. Morris sons and grandchildren changed the name back to Bogdan -- so my husband--the step son--is the only one using Bogdanoff. Eileen
