Eileen, it's been years since your post, but I'm going to post here anyway...
My husband is a BOGDONOFF, descended from east coast Bogdonoffs. At least since emigration, the spelling was this way.
The emigrator was Benjamin BOGDONOFF; he was born August 1863 in Russia (some census records say "Russia/Poland" which makes me think he was on the border).
He came first to England abt 1884/5-- I believe Liverpool, but I have yet to find him there. He was either married when he came or married there to Leah ALPER (b. 1864-1870; d. aft 1930). Two census records indicate they married in 1888/89; another census calculates out to 1895. Their first three children were born in England (possibly Liverpool) between 1890-1893; they had three more children in Massachusetts between 1896-1901.
They settled in Lowell, MA (outside of Boston). Benjamin died there on 2 January 1931. His death certificate says that his parents were Anna and Morris Bogdonoff. I am struck, Eileen, by the "Morris". Benjamin named one of his children Maurice.
Now... Benjamin and Leah were Jewish, as was at least one of their children. (One of their sons married a Swedish Lutheran and their children were not raised Jewish.)
Eileen, were your Bronx Bogdanoffs Jewish?
Your post implies they were.
Have you ever found where in the Ukraine your Bogdanoffs were from?
This part remains a mystery to me. I have been unable to find the town from which they came in "Russia/Poland". And I have been unable to find them through census, marriage or birth records in England between 1884-1894.
It looks like your Morris would have been a contemporary to my Benjamin's children.
