MORE NEWS ON THE BOHAL/BOHALL families

The French and Bretons have been busy scanning and publishing all sorts of things. Recently they put together a History of Pleucadeuc in Morbihan in Brittany in France.

We've visited the site before ~ and a small town named Bohal. Problem was other than a reference to a Viscount Bohal and Henry De Bohal there wasn't a whole lot to work on.

Then, lo and behold when I did extensive reading on Rene d'Anjou (circa 1420-1480) it was mentioned that Henry De Bohal paid something like $50 million in gold to release Rene from captivity at the hands of the Duke of Boulogne (the then ruler of Burgundy and an enemy of the French ~ particularly the Bourbon family ~ which, Rene, having Bourbon ties, found himself a target for all sorts of things.

Rene was also Jeanne d'Arc's political sponsor at court.

By the time we got to his later years we find that things have improved in the Bohall and Rene d'Anjou relationship and Jean (John) had a bunch of titles (mentioned before) and was, in fact, the holder of the Power of Attorney over Rene's second wife. He is, at that time, apparently married to one of Rene's numerous daughters or grandaughters (a Catherine). Rene also had 3 concubines!

So, I've spent a good 10 years trying to find more on this relationship and where this JOHN BOHALL came from. Obviously there was an earlier relationship between HENRY BOHALL and Rene, so what about John and Henry?

That's were we get back to the town of Bohal. It used to be the Bohal Manor. It was owned by various families in the mid 1500s so the current histories tended to focus on its most famous owner ~ the family of ADMIRAL COLIGNY, the Huguenot Leader!

But in the 1400s it was owned by families named Bohal, Boulbart, Villenueve, and some others. But it was owned mostly by Bohal.

This was part of a large estate and Henry De Bohal had a lot of land. He also owned a swampy area of bottom land called Nederland Bohal, or Lower Bohal. He owned a private chapel or two, and these chapels were passed around with the various other noble families, maybe to pay debts or borrow money.

According to local stories Anne of Brittany was buried at the Bohal estate ~ you can look her up BTW ~ she was married to three kings, two of the kings of France. She was the richest woman in the world in her day.

She got buried in the Bohal family back yard.

Earlier Henry De Bohal was one of the richest people in the world as well. However, until he ransomed Rene he was not able to buy land in France. Rene got authorization for Henry to buy land there.

Next thing you know there's a Jean Bohall, another Jean Bohall, and several Jehan Bohal's back in Brittany. Same guys. Jehan is Breton for John. Much as Jean is French for John.

These guys turned into Protestants (along with a bunch of other rural Breton nobles). That's why you have Jean Bohall's statue at the Chateaux (fortress) of Saumur.

I figure they left France early in the Religious Wars and took up opportunities in Nederlands and in Sweden.

Other Bourbon relatives under the title "Beaujolais" had preceded them to Sweden where the new Vassa King had a Grandmother with the Beaujolais title.
