Re: Jean Bohalle site

MORE NEWS ON THE BOHAL/BOHALL families

The French and Bretons have been busy scanning and publishing all sorts of things. Recently they put together a History of Pleucadeuc in Morbihan in Brittany in France.

We've visited the site before ~ and a small town named Bohal. Problem was other than a reference to a Viscount Bohal and Henry De Bohal there wasn't a whole lot to work on.

Then, lo and behold when I did extensive reading on Rene d'Anjou (circa 1420-1480) it was mentioned that Henry De Bohal paid something like $50 million in gold to release Rene from captivity at the hands of the Duke of Boulogne (the then ruler of Burgundy and an enemy of the French ~ particularly the Bourbon family ~ which, Rene, having Bourbon ties, found himself a target for all sorts of things.

Rene was also Jeanne d'Arc's political sponsor at court.

By the time we got to his later years we find that things have improved in the Bohall and Rene d'Anjou relationship and Jean (John) had a bunch of titles (mentioned before) and was, in fact, the holder of the Power of Attorney over Rene's second wife. He is, at that time, apparently married to one of Rene's numerous daughters or grandaughters (a Catherine). Rene also had 3 concubines!

So, I've spent a good 10 years trying to find more on this relationship and where this JOHN BOHALL came from. Obviously there was an earlier relationship between HENRY BOHALL and Rene, so what about John and Henry?

That's were we get back to the town of Bohal. It used to be the Bohal Manor. It was owned by various families in the mid 1500s so the current histories tended to focus on its most famous owner ~ the family of ADMIRAL COLIGNY, the Huguenot Leader!

But in the 1400s it was owned by families named Bohal, Boulbart, Villenueve, and some others. But it was owned mostly by Bohal.

This was part of a large estate and Henry De Bohal had a lot of land. He also owned a swampy area of bottom land called Nederland Bohal, or Lower Bohal. He owned a private chapel or two, and these chapels were passed around with the various other noble families, maybe to pay debts or borrow money.

According to local stories Anne of Brittany was buried at the Bohal estate ~ you can look her up BTW ~ she was married to three kings, two of the kings of France. She was the richest woman in the world in her day.

She got buried in the Bohal family back yard.

Earlier Henry De Bohal was one of the richest people in the world as well. However, until he ransomed Rene he was not able to buy land in France. Rene got authorization for Henry to buy land there.

Next thing you know there's a Jean Bohall, another Jean Bohall, and several Jehan Bohal's back in Brittany. Same guys. Jehan is Breton for John. Much as Jean is French for John.

These guys turned into Protestants (along with a bunch of other rural Breton nobles). That's why you have Jean Bohall's statue at the Chateaux (fortress) of Saumur.

I figure they left France early in the Religious Wars and took up opportunities in Nederlands and in Sweden.

Other Bourbon relatives under the title "Beaujolais" had preceded them to Sweden where the new Vassa King had a Grandmother with the Beaujolais title.

Try these names:

What	Xtian Name	Surname	Who	Title	Where	Detdate	Date	Notes

Hill Terois Trehoet Pleucadeuc

Couédelo Pleucadeuc A Pond

Pleucadeuc Cultivated Around The Claie River
Hill Of Bretin Pleucadeuc Menhir Array ~ A Huge One
Pleucadeuc Town Part Of Questembert.
Questembert Canton Part Of Vannes
Menhirs Pleucadeuc Sent To Canal From Nantes To Brest
Parish Estates Old Town Pleucadeuc
Parish Estates Bayon Pleucadeuc
Parish Estates Bégasson Pleucadeuc
Parish Estates Henry De	Bohal Pleucadeuc
Reforms 1427	Bonabes Bohal (Lower Bohal Village Kergo Pleucadeuc
Parish Estates Bohal Netherlands	(Bohall Swamp) Pleucadeuc
Parish Estates Bonnet Pleucadeuc
Parish Estates Cadet Malestroit Pleucadeuc
Parish Estates Closnine(Le).
Great pictures. Thank you. This is probably the same Jean Bohall who was chancellor of the church at Tours, France from 1414 to 1428. Do you have references for all this info? If so, I can get on with another side of my family.

Thanks for clarifying. I can see you are way down the road ahead of the rest of us.
When will your book be available? I'm very eager to get a hold of it and I know my family members will be too. I think you have corresponded with Gerald Bohall. He and I are first cousins. Now how about a clue as to our cousin status?

Second Part

Try Roger - the University Library should have a complete collection. Look at all the people in Angiers/Anjou in the 1300-1600 period. Focus on relatives of Rene of Anjou and Jeanne de LaVal (her pappa was a French King once).

This is where you will find them. Use the spellings I have given in the earlier message.

Note that the written French you will find in these early records may well be Gallo and not French. They are two different languages. They spoke Gallo in Anjou in the early period.

And, be prepared to be disappointed. Louis XIII and Louis XIV went to great pains to destroy all of the records of all of their Protestant relatives. They seem to have done an excellent job, even to the extent of burning down churches, schools, institutes, homes, port facilities, customs houses - everything.

Well, that's just another one of the mystery names.

It looks like we will be posting it on our website at rcn. As soon as I can get ahold of the oldest son, we will put it up. I have it trimmed down to 1 mg. (about 220 pages, but plenty of references to other sites.)

Your cousin has actually visited La Bohalle. I wish he had also visited Bohal and Bouval, both of which are within 25 or so miles of La Bohalle.

Jean Bohalle

There are two Jean Bohalles. One is affiliated with the church, the other is his "nephew".

Research into conditions at the time revealed it was common for priests to have wives in that part of France.

Ergo, Jean Bohalle is the father of Jean Bohalle.

The priests in this part of France also were later on the foundation of the Protestant Reformation in France. Since almost all priests were the younger sons of the titled nobility, the Protestant Reformation in France happened first among the titled nobles.

What you are looking at in these records of Jean Bohalle and his son Jean Bohalle are just a photograph of a second of their lives.

I believe these men to be part of the "last" royal family of France - the Valois Dynasty. They are running around with the highest ticket people in France at the time.

Look up Rene d'Anjou and his wife Jeanne de LaVal. Their menu for their wedding feast is actually recreated regularly by a number of restaurants in various parts of France.

How many wedding menus from the 1400s do you think were saved?

Both of the Bohalle men would have been in attendance at that feast.

These are highly educated people, and that, in and of itself, was very unusual at the time.

I have worked out a 200+ page book linking into references on the Internet, and citing published works relatively easy to get access to, which covers the Bohall name, if not family, for roughly a 3,000 year period of time.

In all that time, the individuals who left behind the best written record were the two Jean Bohalles.

Bohall History Bust of Jean Bohal 1420

http://www.multimania.com/jbohalle/buste3.jpg

This is a bust of Jean Bohall circa 1420.

Nice, eh?!

This is his father: http://mageos.ifrance.com/Agtvillage/img3.gif

The older gentleman undoubtedly attended the meeting of the estates where Jean d'Arc identified the Dauphin.

The younger gentleman worked for Rene d'Anjou. Rene, among other things, was the fellow who regularly employed Christopher Columbus before he went to work for Isabella of Spain.

Rene was Isabella's grandfather. Our Jean above was the segravier de la foret de beufort pour Jeanne De Laval.

Jeanne was the last Valois princess (her Grandpa was the king of France, folks), and Jean Bohalle had the power of attorney over her property. Jean Bohalle ALSO was responsible for the main castle for Rene, and did a number of other things.

Jean Bohalle was a very high born notable. This Jeanne de Laval seems to be the niece of his wife Catherine, and he himself has 15 or 20 titles besides those I was able to pin on his name.

Later on this entire family with one exception became Protestant. When Louis XIV finally took over and eliminated Protestant liberties, he went about systematically destroying all Protestant family records in France.

This leaves me with a 130 year gap in the French record, between the earliest Bohall we find in America and the last one we find in France.

But, I have found them in Bohemia, Hungary, Poland, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, England and Scotland.

These people are the descendants of Huguenot refugees.

I also have found them in Spain! In fact, Northwest Spain has been named Point Bohal for the last 3000 or so years.
