Kenosha Bohns

I'm looking for any information regarding Johann Bohn of Kenosha, WI. He was born in "Germany" (probably Posen/Poznan) about 1847, arrived in the US on 2 December 1872, had been betrothed to Anne Hoppe while in Prussia and married her at some point after arrival and before 1879; children were Charles Fred, Emma, Martha (my great-grandmother), Lena and Emil. Interestingly, both Emma and Martha married brothers from the Steffen family. As an aside, I wonder how a DNA test would compare those sets of "double cousins," as it were.

Anyway, Johann Bohn called himself John until the time of his death about 1897, of a strangulated hernia, in Paris, Kenosha County. I would like to learn more about his life in the US as well as any ancestors he might have had. I'm trying to track down some Steffen cousins (there's a whole heap of 'em) but meanwhile wanted to post this message in case anyone knows about this person.

Thanks!

Janey,

I apologize for just now noticing your post in September. I was pleasantly surprised though!! My grandmother, Velma Lucille (Hern) Edwards was Opal's daughter. The farm you spoke of staying at in Cairo MO is still there, in fact the house is my childhood home. I still reside there with my own family now.

I have done quite a bit of research into the Bohn and Heflin families that I would be willing to share with you if would share any info you have with me. I have several pictures of you and your brothers (mostly school aged) that were sent to my great grandmother Opal.

I look forward to speaking with you more and sharing family history with you. I can be more easily reached by email address: wcreed911@yahoo.com.

Best Wishes,
Wendy (Edwards)Creed

Hello Tbena,

I am related to August Bohn in a direct line. He was my 4 times great grandfather and I am linked to him by Wilhelmine their daughter. August and Wilhelmina the first wife's daughter who married Henry Becker, born 1835 in Hollstein. They had a daughter, Mary born 1865 in Iowa and she married Gustaf S Nerdrum from Norway. My surname is Nerdrum.

I am looking for information about the fist wife Wilhelmine and of her parents, siblings etc but would also like to know more about August Bohn too. I have copied the information you gave to blue angel and really grateful for all the info I can collect.

Thank you so much for all the info and fun to know we are related.

Hi there,

I believe that we have a similar ancestor in Peter Paul Bohn. Peter Bohn is my 3rd great grandfather, and his son Peter is my 2nd great grandfather. It has been very difficult to trace this line of my ancestry because Peter Bohn Jr. changed his name to "Robert Barney" during the late 19th century. If you have more information on the Bohn/Barney family, I would be very grateful.

-Maddie

Fred Bohn - Tacoma, WA Cigar manufacturer

Our Local Tacoma Newspaper, "The News Tribune" runs a daily "Looking Back" feature on A2 that consists of an old photo w/ description followed by 100 YEARS AGO TODAY; 75 YEARS AGO TODAY; 50 YEARS AGO TODAY. So on the 100 years ago today for Thursday, July 14, 1911 was included this notice:

"At 6:30 a.m. Monday morning Fred Bohl, 58, who has manufactured cigars in Tacoma for 20 years, went into his garden in his old clothes to work. a few minutes later Mrs. Bohl arose and began preparing breakfast. When she called him, he did not reply. He was not in the garden and has not been seen by friends or relatives. He had not missed a day at his shop at 937 Tacoma Ave. for years. A careful search has been made to no avail."

This is one of my husband's favorite features in the morning pager, so he wanted me to try to find out what happened to Fred Bohl and I did. We are not related to this family, but thought this was interesting & should be shared on this Bohl Family Forum.

From The Seattle Daily Times
Saturday, July 15,1915

GOES FISHING AND
FAILS TO TELL WIFE

Tacoma Cigar Manufacturer Mourned as
Dead for Several
Days

TACOMA. Saturday, July 15.--Fred Bohl, one of the oldest cigar manufacturers in the city, joined a party of three men in a fishing excursion on the Narrows Monday morning, failed to tell his family of his outing and thereby hangs a tale. Until yesterday afternoon, when it was learned he was in the camp at the Narrows, his family had given him up for lost.
During his absence Bohl's son, Sydney, a partner in business with him at 937 South Tacoma Avenue, searched all the towns along the Tacoma Eastern Railroad and part of those on the Northern Pacific between Tacoma and Orting in the hope of getting some trace of the man's whereabouts. The elder Bohl in times past used to make business trips to these towns.
Failing in his efforts to find his father, Sydney Bohl notified the newspapers of his disappearance, and it was but a short time afterward when word came that the elder Bohl had been enjoying himself immensely, fishing on the Narrows.
Sydney Bohl went to the Narrows in a launch and came on the party as it was breaking camp preparatory to removing to the city.

Sometime between this 1911 article and the 1920 census, Fred Bohl's wife Harriet died.

1930 United States Federal Census about Fred Bohl
Name: Fred Bohl
Home in 1930: Tacoma, Pierce, Washington
View Map
Age:
Hi Dan. If the offer to share the list is still open, I'd love to take you up on it! My grandfather was Russell Rano Bohn b.1887 in Frederick. All my mother can tell me is that he was adopted and she thinks the family was Dunkard, and something about a feud between Boon/e and Bohn and names being changed, etc. I'm interested I your records as I have read that Dunkards in that area merged with the German Reformed Church. Looking for a needle in a haystack! Thanks in advance. sskraus@yahoo.com.

I concur with your Bohn's from Baden. Have you been able to break past Joseph (est 1800) and Matilda Bohn? Jean and Joseph were brothers. I am Great grandson to Joseph Bohn (JR?) Note, too that Joseph obtained his US citezenship in 1866 then dissappeared until 1895. My thought is he went back to Baden to help his parents and to serve the Grand Duke of Baden until its collapse late 1880's.

I have a Jacob Bohn(1848-1956) son to a Jean Bohn (Mar 1826- 12 Dec 1897) Nephew to a Joseph Bohn (1842-1956) who is great-grandfather to me. Jacob married a Mamie (?) no record of issue. Most of these Bohns stayed in the NYC area.

MY BOHN FAMILY CAME FROM HENDERSON, KY. I AM INTERESTED IN ANYONE WHO CAN TELL ME ANYTHING ABOUT PETER BOHN & HIS WIFE MARY, THAT SETTLED IN HENDERSON, KY. STORY HAS IT THAT PETER BOHN WAS BROUGHT OVER HERE FROM GERMANY BY AN UNCLE, I BELIEVE ALSO NAMED PETER.SUPPOSEDLY HIS FATHER HAD DIED, AND THAT CAN BE TRUE OR NOT TRUE, WHO KNOWS? HE WAS MARRIED TO A WOMAN NAMED MARY (BUT, WE DON'T HAVE HER LAST NAME). SOME OF THE OLD CENSUSES LIST HER PLACE OF BIRTH AS GERMANY & OTHER TIMES SHE'S LISTED AS BEING FROM KENTUCKY. I KNOW THAT BOTH PETER & MARY SPOKE GERMAN AND HAD STRONG GERMAN ACCENTS. ANYWAY, PETER & MARY HAD SEVERAL CHILDREN, MY GREAT GRANDFATHER WAS EDMUND (OR EDDIE, EDWARD, OR ED.HE WAS BORN APPROX. 1885. HIS SIBLING WERE: MINNIE, THERESSA,ALBERT,LOUIS & A COUPLE OF OTHERS. MY GREAT-GRANDFATHER EDMUND MARRIED GERTRUDE MIDDLETON AND THEY HAD 2 CHILDREN, ERNEST AUGUST BORN AROUND 1906 AND EDNA BORN AROUND 1913. THEY MIGRATED TO THE INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA AREA AROUND THE 1920'S (NOT ENTIRELY ACURATE, BUT A GUESS). I DO KNOW THAT BY THE 1930 CENSUS, THEY WERE UP HERE. THAT'S WHERE OUR FAMILY HAS ALWAYS LIVED (INDIANAPOLIS). I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW SOME MORE BACKGROUND ON THIS PART OF THE BOHN FAMILY. I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW WHAT PART OF GERMANY THEY CAME FROM AND IF ANYONE OUT THERE HAS ANY INFO ON THEM. MY PART OF THE BOHN FAMILY WAS RELATED TO AUGUST BOHN FROM AROUND EVANSVILLE. MY GRANDFATHERS NAME WAS ERNEST AUGUST, AND I'M SURE HE WAS NAMED AFTER AUGUST BOHN OR HIS DAD OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. I ALSO KNOW THEY WERE RELATED TO A PHILIP (PHILLIP) BOHN. ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION WOULD BE GREAT! MY EMAIL ADDRESS IS: lamclerran@att.net.
THANKS,
LISA MCLERRAN

I would very much like to have a copy of the picture of August Bohn and his family. Although he is not a blood relation of my husband, he married Amanda Bullock who was
my husband's grandmother and August, or Grandpa Bohn, was very much a father and a grandfather to Aaron Wilson and his sons - my husband, Robert and his brother, Vernon. Grandpa was a very gentle and kind man and much loved by the family.

I will be happy to reimburse you for any expenses involved in sending the picture. If you can scan it and send it via e-mail that would be great.
Thank you so much for responding.
I actually have information about August and his ancestors. I do believe that Amelia Bohn Gabe and Joseph Gabe are related to them, but they are not his ancestors. August's father was George J. Bohn (1851-1944) and his mother was Louisa Herbert (1862-1947) His grandmother was Mary Eva Gabe (1830-1912) Who I believe to be the sister of Joseph Gabe. I have a family photo of August, his parents, his siblings, and even his grandmother, if you are interested.
Mical Cisterna

I do not know of a connection, but that does not mean there isn't one. If you have a male Bohn descendant that would be willing to take the DNA test, it should help determine what larger Bohn / Boon / Boone family your family is part of. There is a website that has information on this DNA project at: http://www.boone-dna.com/

Notice that on the Y-DNA link, we did establish a connection with the descendants of Johann Diel Bohn and a German Bohn.

Dan

I believe that these are the ancestors of the August
Bohn that my father's grandmother, Amanda Bullock, married in Boonville, Indiana. They lived in Evansville, Indiana. August Bohn's siblings were Gregory, Willie (William?) Clara. Unfortunately I do not have info on August Bohn's parents. August Bohn died on February 23, 1965 in Evansville. I do not have the year of his birth.

My husband remembers that August Bohn's mother did speak German. Hope this helps. I expect that the 1830 census of Henderson County, Kentucky would include this family.

These Bohns were from henderson, Kentucky.

There is a group of Simshausers in Missouri and Illinois that all came from the area of Worms Germany and Hanover Germany. Our Simshausers came to America through New Orleans and were Lutherns. Frederich Wilhelm married Anna Metta Hesse in St. Louis.
Good mLuck with your research.

Wow. I haven't checked this board in a few years now, university took up all of my spare geneaology time, but this is more information than I ever hoped to find! Thank you so much for your post, it means the world to me, no one in our family ever knew much about grospapa's wife. To be able to have a history to go with the name is amazing!

If it isn't too much to ask, could we possibly exchange emails? I would love to have a picture of those charcoal sketches, if possible, and the gravestone inscriptions, ship name and such. In return, digging through one of my great-grandmother's considerablly packed closets, I came across what I assume is Gustav and Emma's wedding portrait, as well as a family picture taken later in time, and if you are interested I would be happy to scan and send them to you! My email is blue_angel8689@hotmail.com.

Thank you again for your time!

Brittany

No cost for the .pdf file.
It includes photocopies of original documents, with translations, maps and pictures of churches in Germany.

Bohn - Justin, Emma Lina, Anna - Altheim, Baden, Germany

Looking for any information on Justin Bohn of Altheim, Mosbach, Baden, Germany. His sisters Anna and Emma Lina came to the US between 1875-1890. Justin is in Emma Lina's will in 1941 - she died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Emma Lina, born about 1864, was married to Millard F. Peterson of Philadelphia, PA. Anna, born about 1858) died in 1896 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA and was married to Frederic Simshaeuser or Simshauser (born Germany). Justin doesn't seem to have ever come to the USA and likely was very old in 1941.
Emma Lina and Millard had no children but many nieces and nephews. I am trying to determine who Anna's children were. Her husband remarried after Anna died to a Gertrude Heeg 9 August 1897 at St. Boniface Church in NYC.
Any information about these Bohns, their parents and offspring would be greatly appreciated.
Any information about Frederic Simshauser and his ancestors and descendants is also appreciated.
Sara

Bohn Brothers of Riedseltz, Wissembourg Canton, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France

According to information translated from Records of the Catholic Church in Riedseltz, Wissembourg Canton, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France 1830-1846 by Robert E. Bettac, and published on Linda S. Braund’s Riedseltz website, three sons of Peter BOHN and Catharina BUGASSER of Riedseltz, immigrated to America.

They were:
o	Peter BOHN, born 13 July 1814, emigrated in 1833
o	Johannes BOHN, born 14 Mar 1816, emigrated in 1837
o	Martin BOHN, born 07 Aug 1818, and his wife Barbara KOLB and their two children, Odelia and Ferdinand, emigrated in 1846. Within a year of arriving, Martin died in Dayton, Ohio. Barbara KOLB later married John DORSHEID and resided in Sheldon, New York.

Another son, the oldest, Jacob BOHN, born 2 Jan 1813, and his wife Elizabeth KOLB, sister of Barbara KOLB (above), and their two children, Barbara (age 11) and Mary Caroline (age 6), emigrated in 1847. Elizabeth Kolb died in 1852. Jacob then married Anna Marie Voss, daughter of Joseph Voss and Anna Marie Heintz, and widow of Peter Armbrust.

I am a descendent of Jacob BOHN and his second wife Anna Marie Voss. I am interested in learning more about the other brothers, especially Peter and Johannes.

Roger Bohn
Batavia, NY

Re: Johann Diel BOHN/BOHNE b.1711, Germany

Jeannette,

This information is incorrect:

I would please like to verify info that I found for
Johann Diel Bohne, Born 5 April 1704? Born in Devonshire, England? Christened in 16 Jul 1706? Christened in Brandninch, Devonshire, England? Died in Exeter, Burk, PA? Died 30 Jan 1776? Married in 1720, Carroll County, MD, wife Anna Maria Dicker, 1720-1777?

The names of the children are correct. Nellie Whedon Woods information is the correct information. She wrote an article on the family around 1945. Every bit of the information I have double checked on her is right on. I've seen photo copies of the immigrant records of 1741 in Pennsylvania. The "Poon" is because it is poorly written. His oath of allegance is the best signature and is clearly Johann Diel Bohn. He was age 30 at time of immigration, which would make his approximate date of birth as 1741.

While in Germany I found a Bohn family member who took a DNA test. I also found a Boon male descendant of Johann Diel Bohn in US who took the DNA test. They were a perfect match, supporting the research of Nellie Whedon that they were German ... not British.

Also when you look at the baptismal records of descendants of Johann Diel Bohn for the first couple of generations, they are all German churches.

Dan

Children, Nicholas, Abaraham, Margaret, my ancestor, Mary Diel Bohne, Jacob, Catherine, Elizabeth, Adam. Some say he was born in Germany. They report a source of a Johann Dweal Pohn (Phonetic) arriving from Germany. I'm sure you are familiar with this, see below. I hae great respect for you and your research. And may I have your thoughts, opinions, ideas, knowledge, proof or whatever you've got.

"In the year 1741 a German immigrant by the name of Johann Dial Bohne landed in Philadelphia. Doughtless his wife and 3 or 4 sons were with him. Johann gave his age as 30. The ship's passenger list shows that Johann Diel Bohne arrived in Philadelphia on the ship "Marlborough" in 1741. He is number 47 on the list as "Dewaile Poon" (phonetically the German "B" is often mistaken for "P"). The Oath of Allegiance of the "Marlborough's passengers was made 23 Sept 1741 at the courthouse in Philadelphia. Present were The Honorable George Thomas, Esq.. Lieutenant Governor, and Samuel Hassell, Esq., Mayor of Philadelphia. On 10 Apr 1750, 50 acres near Frizellburg, now Carroll Co. MD, called "Boon's Content" were patented to Theobald Boon. He named 5 sons and 4 daughters in his will: Nicholas stayed in MD, Jacob went to Virginia, Abraham went to Virginia, Margaret stayed in MD, Mary went to Tenn, John went to Virginia, Catherine stayed in MD, Elizabeth went to Tenn, Adam no further information. From "The German Bohne-Bohn-Boon-Boone Family" by Nellie (Woods) Whedon 1945."
You and I discussed Mary Ann Hoss, daughter of John Hoss, about a week ago.
My email: Brooks.Ranch at live.com
Thank you,
Jeannette Viers Brooks
