Hello,
My Great Grandmother was Adelia (Adele) Wilhelmina Boien born 1894 in New Hanover, IL. Daughter of Heinrich (Henry Boien) and Henrietta Spellmeier. If I am correct that would make her a younger (by 20 years) sister of your GreatGrandmother. Id love to know more about New Hanover and any relatives still living there.
Thanks,
Jeff Brewer

Just happened to see your message regarding the Boien's in New Hanover. My greatgrandmother was Elizabeth Boien (Eiza Boyen, Lizzie, etc.); my grandmother was born in their house right in New Hanover, still standing. I can give you the particulars if you are interested?

From what you are saying in your latest messages it seems that we are talking about the same person. I checked his address in Beaver Falls, Pa and it is the same with the one you said it was your grandfather's. And the reason for moving from Beaver Falls is the same: a school was built there. And in a letter he sent in 1982 he said he was about to leave Beaver Falls, so I suppose he moved out a little after that. We also know that one of his sons had two daughters and a son and the other two sons and one daughter. If you are interested to find out more about him and his family in Romania, his reasons for leaving the country, I would gladly provide that information. I could also send you some of the photos he sent to us to make even surer that we are talking about the same person. If you are interested, you can contact me at the following email address: marboian@yahoo.com.
I often wondered why my grandfather chose to come to America at the age of sixteen. Did he already have family here? Did he make the journey alone? Why did he want to keep his family a secret? He would often have my father mail letters to his family from places we would vacation to make it seem that my grandfather was in these places. Was there the fear of the political problems of Romania in that time? He was a kind man. I knew he had a bad temper. I never saw him like that, but my father and his wife did. We were always taught to hide things - emotions from him.

In my distant memory, there was something about my grandfather, Joseph William, originally having the name "John". This confused me, as his first born son, my father, was named Joseph, Jr. and his younger brother was named John. My grandparent's address which no longer exists, (the city built a school on about twenty of the neighboring properties) was 1905 Eighth Avenue, Beaver Falls, PA.
Does John translate to Joseph or did immigration just make a mistake? Is it accepted that Boian became Boyan? I'm very new at this.
Joseph married my mom Ila Cecilia Smith and had three children, Joan, Thomas, and me, William Joseph. My uncle, John, married Elizabeth and had three children, Dolores, Linda, and John.

Some of the information you mentioned in your message correspond with what I know about the relatives I am looking for, but some don't. My grandfather's brother ( Ioan Boian, later John Boyan), left Sapartoc-Sighisoara, Romania around 1914. He settled in Beaver Falls, Pensylvania, married Anna and had two sons, John and Joseph. His village, Sapartoc, is near Sighisoara, in Transylvania, Romania. And one of his nephews in Romania, my father, is a priest.

My grandfather, Joseph William Boyan, Sr. came to the United States at the age of sixteen in the late 1800's. I believe he landed in New York where he met and married my grandmother, Anna Victoria (Cook?) His son, my father, was born in 1916 in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania where my grandfather settled and was employed as a steel worker.

My grandfather was a very secretive man when it came to discussing his family for reasons unknown, but said his family came from near Transylvania/Romania and I remember that he had a brother that was a priest.

I would greatly be interested in any info that could help trace my family name. I did hear that the name may have been spelled "Boian".

Hello James
1st the Romanian Boian's are of no relation to the Boian's of Kentucky. The Boian's of Kentucky were descendants of Ephraim Bowen of Virginia. His youngest son James changed the spelling to Boian because of a family dispute with his brothers over his fathers estate. After James's death his wife and children moved to Kentucky. then onto Missouri. The oldest son of James returned to Kentucky, started a tannery in Estill county Kentucky and he is primarly the line which is found in the boook you wrote about. I believe your grandfather and father are in the book. I will look in it tonight and let you know for sure. I also believe I have them in my family tree. I have a large tree with records, photos etc on ancestry.com.
My father was Harold Boian Davis born in Kentucky. My father was a marine during the Korean war, a D.I. at Paris Island. He was raised by his great aunt Dora Boian in Paint Lick Ky. AutnDora had many pictures in her house of all her kin that served during WWII. My father also lived part of his youth in Dayton Ohio and we have many relatives in the area. I was born in Northeast Ohio and have lived for many year in Az. I get back to Ohio and Ky every couple of years.
contact me direct at

jerrydavis3@cox.net.

Jerry Davis

My name is James Boian, Son of Larwrence (Larry) Boian, Grandson of Harold Boian (born in Ohio). I have done some research on our last name a few years ago. My grandfater Harold knew some Boians (family) out in KY when the book was being writen. From what I was told these Boians were distant cousins and that my son, Thomas Boian was the last entry before publication. I somehow contacted a Boian in KY and was told that we were not in the book nor were even known about... actually, the Boian I spoke too was a bit rude.

From my investigations the majority of the Boians came from Europe to Canada to US.... and the name came from a culture from around 7-5K bc. After the Romans took over our ground we left looking for fertile land and eventually making our way to Canada.

If you search this via the net, you will see that the origin of Boian was in now Romania. There they were farmers, and a celtic warrior tribe. Researchers have discovered pottery, weapons, fortifed houses that are partly underground, fortified church, and a small castle.

I have still not come across a coat of arms yet...

Curious, do you know of any Boians who havent served in the military? I know I was the only boian in the Marine Corps from 98-06... also, how about female Boians being born vice being married into the name? On my side all we have had in generations is males...

If anyone has any information please contact me at boian7041@yahoo.com

Wilhelmina Catherine Boian/Boien/Boyen Monroe Co, IL

Wilhelmina (Minnie) Catherine Boian (Boin/Boien/Boyen -- I have seen it spelled all ways) was born on Aug 1874 in New Hanover, IL (Monroe Co). She died, by my estimates, around 1920. She married Phillip Leonhard Kopp in 1894 and they lived together in Waterloo, IL.
They had at least three children:
Arthur John (1897-1975)
Oliver (1899-?)
Harold (1901-?)

Wilhelmina's parents were Heinrich Boian and Henriette Spellmeyer. They married about 1874. Heinrich was born in 1854, he died before 1900. Henriette (Yetta) was born in 1855 in New Hanover, IL. They had another daughter that I know of by the name of Christiana born in 1879.
